Forty-years of back-and-forth in the football rivalry between Southern University and Grambling State University don’t mean much to one longtime member of Southern’s governing board, at least not when the money starts slowing down.

Tony Clayton, a Southern law school grad and member of Southern’s Board of Supervisors, didn’t wait more than two days after Southern beat Grambling 40-17 in this year’s Bayou Classic in New Orleans before deciding to rub some salt in the rival school’s wounds.

Clayton on Monday confirmed that he sent an email to Southern board members raising the possibility of kicking Grambling out of future Bayou Classic match-ups. The contract between the two schools is good for one more year.

The idea sparked a bunch of “no comments†and unreturned phone calls Monday from supporters of both universities. Of the few who did comment, there wasn’t much support for Clayton’s proposal.

Reached by phone late in the day, Clayton refused to back down, arguing that his reasoning was sound.

Both schools rely on the week’s worth of events as a recruiting showcase to attract students from around the country. And every year, after the Bayou Classic parade through downtown New Orleans is over and the marching bands have faced off, both schools count on a major revenue boost when the two teams meet in the
Mercedes-Benz Superdome in front of a national television audience.

But this year’s announced attendance of 47,000 fans is down significantly from the record 76,641 who showed up in 1994, or the average of roughly 70,000 who attended each of the games between 2000 and 2004.

“For the last several years, Southern has been doing 90 percent of the work and producing 70 to 80 percent of the fans, and we’re having to split the proceeds,†Clayton said. “It doesn’t make sense.â€

90 percent of what work? What kind of work is he talking about? And while it is true that SU fans outnumber Grambling fans at the classic, SU still only represents 50 percent of the product.

I love TonyClayton

Him and SeeingSpots the only jags I like. He bout that bitness. None of that mess a regular jag is talking.

On a sidenote ...Grambling needs to go D2

I can see Clayton's point of view cause it's just like Alcorn and JSU over the last few years, not counting this year.
The question is, who would he replace Grambling with?

TonyClayton needs to be SWAC commissioner

What is his email addy twitter account facebook info.

I want to send him praise for his boldness and progressive thinking. While the SWAC is standing still he is thinking ahead.

Great job Tony

I ain't mad at him although he's being a drama queen. He could have work this behind the scene.

Look at the JSU scum come out of the gutter. Wanting a piece of the action ....

I don't think Tony is being a drama queen though. He's been dealt a card and decided it's time to play it. Some folks may not want to rock the boat or may want to play nice, but that doesn't make Tony wrong.

He's an AZZ hole. I have only missed one Bayou Classic. (KEEP GRAM).

It's definitely true that the BC could be more profitable if there were more fan participation. Whether that's more Grambling fans or fans from another school.

The guy is not crazy.

The BC could be incurring missed opportunities because of the lackadaisical attitudes of Grambling's administration and fans.

That's true. Dude ain't crazy.

I disagree to an extent. Which other fan base (don't say JSU) can bring out the crowds for this game like these 2 schools? Who else would garner the national attention Grambling helps to bring? N.O. is a good 75% SU on any given day, but that's nothing new. Even when Gram was good we still outnumbered them. You can't remove one of the originators from a product like the Bayou Classic.

What are you smokin'?!?!? Eddie Robinson approached Southern about getting together to make the rivalry to what it is today! Southern wasn't thinking about it! Not even thinkin' about it!

Why not say JSU?

JSU is the only other school that could bring the numbers and it would be possible to move the BC to another weekend which just may be beneficial for the entire conference.

For what it's worth though, the goal may not be to remove Grambling. Just to let them know that there are other viable alternatives available and not to take the BC for granted. Which it seems that they are doing.

That was 40 years ago.

Today ... y'all are slacking.

Tony is saying why don't y'all approach us with some more fan participation? Today! :emlaugh:

It would be stupid to move JSU from a home-home to a classic game. It gets numbers on its own. You have the potential for 2 big paydays when SU is the home team as opposed to only having the BC.

Not necessarily.

How do those "two big paydays" compare to 70K+ in the Super Dome.

Not to mention the idea that keeping things the way they are could be shortsighted. If this conference is serious about increasing the quality of play, then participating in the playoffs and growing the programs to a level that they can compete with other FCS schools may be more beneficial to all of the schools in the SWAC.

Increasing the quality of play may be a financial windfall that many are overlooking. I'm convinced fans, advertisers and television would be willing to pay more for a better product. Moving the BC gives the SWAC an opportunity to do that.

You can't just say Southern would make more money by leaving things the way they are. That's shortsighted and may not be true. That type of thinking is what has led the SWAC to being the worst football conference in America in the first place.

I understand Tony's point and yes, SU brings the most fans but I think they come specifically to see SU play Gram.

Tony Clayton is a complete idiot. I've always made that clear. He should move to Rwanda or Syria and live out the rest of his life there.
