SU Should Start New Coaching Search Immediately





Doug is Grambling and he will always be Grambling. Southern send people to Grambling, we don't receive people from Grambling.

You must be too young to remember that one of the men that Lee-Hines Field is named for is Emory Hines. Prior to coming to Southern to coach baseball, Coach Hines coached football at Grambling.

In the 80's, former Grambling player and women's basketball Coach Bob Hopkins also came to SU to coach Men's basketball. Now you know!

Other than Lou Brock and few others that made it to MLB, I really don't know that much about the history of SU's baseball program or any SWAC school's baseball program. Bob Hopkins might have coached at Southern, but during my time at Southern in the 80's it was all Ben Jobe. But thanks for that piece of info.

Now that you mentioned it, I do remember coach Hopkins short stay at Southern, but when Ben Jobe got to Southern, I guess Hopkins decided to retire, since he knew he couldn't beat Jobe. I remember my homeboy 6'-11' Nap Johnson coming to Southern and getting ran out of the mini-dome.

SU is 0-0 in the SWAC. I know we are the leader of this conference, and fail to win a D-1 OC game. Our bad. No one else won won either, but I know SU is held to a higher standard. Last year we were the only school to win a D-1 OC game.
