Southern at Northwestern State

A home and home series with McNeese doesn't make sense. Their stadium is too small and their fans don't travel well.

Considering the budget constraints we all have, that old saying "if it doesn't make dollars, it doesn't make sense" applies here.

It's not worth Southern's time to play McNeese there or in Baton Rouge.

Didn't they come to Baton Rouge already? That's what home and home is supposed to be like isn't it? You play at my place and I play at yours? Isn't that how it works for most contracts?
Return game or the payout they got the payout contract complete

 Some folks don't get this. Same can be said for every FCS school in Louisiana. At least we get a pay check from the FBS schools and a couple of them are glorified FCS schools.

McNeese is just not a money making, which is why out-of-conference schools in Louisiana look the other way when they come calling.

Yall can make all the excuses yall want, you were afraid of McNeese yet you were contractually obligated to play them. Yall really looked bad running from them in real life and on this board. You are running everywhere to play everybody but the team you were contractually obligated to play. It really makes SU and the SWAC look bad.

NWstern said they werent going to give you a chance to back out of the contract. They are making you come there first. I heard they are going to back out of the contract next year.

That's outstanding.....

If it makes no sense for you to play an IN-STATE FCS team then you don't need to be in FCS. This is the same mentality that got us the 9-game mandate so I hope you are not one of those who are against the 9 game format. You all are in a GREAT position to play 1-AA teams often with considerable fan interest. JSU is not in that position. The closest thing we have is Delta State but you have Nicholls, SELA, NW State and McNeese. One of those teams should always be on your schedule and if we have a 7-game format two of them should always be on your schedule.

Considerable fan interest?

SU fan interest? TP, those schools have no fans. If Southern went there or if they came to Baton Rouge, Southern fans would be paying their bills. Why would anyone do that? Why do you think that McNeese guy was whining so much about a $60,000 payout? That money meant a lot to them.

It doesn't make financial sense to play them home or away, TP. The stands would be packed with Southern fans in both locations.

While I agree with your points (which is why Northwestern is paying us to come up there this year), playing the in-state schools isn't just about the immediate financial impact. Beating the in-state schools on the field can help us beat them in recruiting. Better players lead to better teams and better attendance at Mumford. At the end of the day, if we're going to base who we play on how well they travel, we'll never play anyone.

Their fan support has been eroded by LSU. I remember attending one of Nicholls State games when I knew their SGA president. They had no more than 2,000 people in attendance. I asked her, "where are the Nicholls State's fans?" Her reply was, "they are in Baton Rouge at the LSU game". She also said, "most of their students won't schedule late classes on Friday during the Fall semesters, so they could leave early to be in Baton Rouge".

They have no fans because they have been losing and losing badly. If they were winning consistently. They would have more than 2K fans. Plus they have had financial issues too with the budget cuts. La probably has too many FCS level football programs for the size of the state. I would imagine their enrollment is probably down as well.

True. But, what if you don't win? What if you only win 50% of the time? Would the recruiting advantage still be there or would Southern be better off seeking more lucrative games?

...and? That STILL sounds like a better home-home deal than playing a home-home with most other teams across the nation. It benefits your local fans, your team and it keeps down the travel costs for your dept. Again, if you don't play them, who will you play that will be more convenient to your own school and fan base? But don't worry.. when these schools get banned from playing FBS teams, all of this we are talking about won't matter. It's gonna either be McNeese or Benedict. You choose! :D

It's not just Nicholls State. I'm sure McNeese State and Southeastern are experiencing the same thing, which is probably why neither school have considered expanding their stadium.

Enrollment has dropped.

If we don't win, then we now have a target to strive toward. If you're playing against a historically solid program (McNeese is a good example), winning half of the time is nothing to sneeze at. From there, your recruiting pitch is that we're competitive with them, plus we have a larger fanbase and more TV exposure.

Also, I do believe SU set the attendance record for Nicholls State too. I remember marching in their stadium my freshman year in college. That little stadium was so packed, I could have sworn people was sitting on top each other. Also, Northwestern State would place chairs on the field behind each end zone for the bands when they played SU.
