Despite Violence, Chicago Youth Team Makes Run Towards Little League World Series

August 5, 2013 | By Kendrick Marshall

This is about the JRW little league team having success amid the violence that has impacted Chicago.

The senseless slayings of 247 Chicagoans has placed the city in the cumbersome position being regarding as one of America’s most deadly.

Tears and blood flow through the streets with each passing day as the body count, much like the summer index, continues to rise.

The first weekend of August featured two deaths and 22 others — including a 6-year-old boy – who was wounded in gun violence across the city.

Amid the chaos – crying mothers, candlelight vigils, police tough talk, anti-violence marches and political posturing by Mayor Rahm Emanuel — the first weekend of eighth month of the calendar year brought smiles from an unexpected source.

More than a dozen youths who play for the storied all-black Jackie Robinson West Little League on Chicago’s South Side won the first two games of the Great Lakes regional tournament in Indianapolis, Ind. just days after claiming the state title.

JRW topped Hamilton West Side (Ohio) 5-4 in the opener Saturday and crushed Knox County (Kentucky) 11-0 Sunday. JRW is just a few precious wins away from punching a ticket to the Little League World Series held annually in Williamsport, Pa.

I don't get why every story about "black" Chicago has to mention the violence in the city.
I don't get why every story about "black" Chicago has to mention the violence in the city.

I thought it was just me, but in some cases I see it as the writer trying to compare and contrast some situations or even show that situations are not entirely hopeless.

In the case of this article I do take issue with the lines in bold. I think that is a bit extreme and more of shock value. It makes Chicago sound like Iraq or Afghanistan.

Um...

More people were killed in Chicago than troops were killed in Iraq since 2003...That's why the kids began calling Chicago "Chiraq"

You cannot talk about what those kids are doing WITHOUT mentioning the violence they are surrounded by on a daily basis. Hell, Kendrick GREW UP in that Little League during the 90s. His view of what's going on would be a lot more credible than us on the outside and A LOT of national media.

Let's say the kids from the Chi actually do make it to South Williamsport, Pa. for the LLWS ... (Imagine those kids make it and the President and FLOTUS WILL more than likely call them/the coaches/speak in person etc) ... WTF y'all think is going to be the narrative when the ESPN boys get a hold of that story. At least Kendrick got in on the ground floor and started to creative the narrative.

Kendrick, good work! I always root for teams like the kids for Chicago. Fugg it, we are ALL JRW when those kids play. I wish them the best. Now let me see when they play on TV in the regionals...

These kids are putting their feet in the arses of the competition ... I can't wait to see them on TV

The Chicago kids play at 6 p.m. on ESPN 2....let's support OUR boys!!!

JRW teams have always been well-coached.

I'm a very jaded person, but seeing these young black boys just makes me swell with pride. Let's go JRW!!!!

Wisconsin is having hella problems with the JRW kids on the basepaths

Damn the speed thier swings are impressive

They just wore that poor kid out. What impressed me was that last double. The pitch came in on the kid's hands, and he smacked it down the left field line. That is very, very hard to do ... They are patient at the plate, and they make excellent cuts when they swing.

Hell no! this little kid (I think his name is DJ) is a switch hitter.......All 70 pounds and got on base using his left and right on different at bats.. :emlaugh:
