Fallout From SCG Moving

Looking at Prairie View and Texas Southern's attendence figures should hold no bearing why moving the SWAC championship game to Houston. Why should it?

If the championship game is say Jackson State vs Southern, do you think Houston area J-State Tigers and Jaguars as well as Jackson area fans and Baton Rouge area fans will say to themselves, "Why should we go support our teams in Houston, TX for a chance to win the conference championship when Prairie View or Texas Southern fans won't?

When Prairie View made it to the championship game in 2009, they had a very nice turnout despite the elements as well as Texas Southern just a year later in 2010.

The SWAC office is not basing moving the championship game's attendance primarily or even secondarily on Prairie View or Texas Southern fans to make the attendance what it is.

True......S.U. and Gram pulled 47K on a spur of the moment situation. It just depends on who is playing, what kind of product the two teams are putting on the field and what kind of marketing happens.

That's the question... But if any of you took basic economics you got to look at it another way. All those Houston Swac fans are gonna show up just to see... That's money you(SWAC) can bank... The out of town fans are gonna bring money to Houston.. That's money they(Houston) can bank... We all are tired of cold, wet, dreary Birmingham.. No night life at all.. Now Houston is different.. Dome... Dome Dome

You damn skippy and I don't give a damn who playing in the SCG, I will be there because it is waaaay easier to get to the Big H from Dallas than expensive airport, dreary weather Birmingham

lol Hell no. Some fans may think like that but for the most part others don't. I do know that I wouldn't be surprised to see it be 50/50 SU fans in Reliant with Houston.

The LDC is a different animal as I think it had more to do with stadium location and pricing over the years.

I've been to many LDCs since 86 and it drew well when the Dome meant something....I still think when it left Robertson and Rice in 94 and 95 that's when the downfall started as now you went from free or reduced parking and simple tickets to accelerated costs. Black folk mentality is if we have the space, we can wait but if its going to be packed, then we better buy early.

The game will be home-and-home eventually anyway but long term I would have it at UH if TSU can create demand from BBVA.

1st)............. I thought when they announced they was moving all the sporting events to Houston, I thought the SWAC offices was going also.

#2) This is the shat I'm talking about. Did these fools actually think a city was going to keep giving them free sahat, kick in money, and watch another city reap the benefits? I see our conference leaders have the survival instincts of a Doh-Doh bird.

Frat, the SWAC office has no intentions of staying in B-ham. Moving the SCG was the first body blow. I bet Duer is in Houston right now looking for a place to stay. LOL.

Yall country bumkins tell more lies then James Bell.

Cee you don't like Bama your damn self. LOL. You just work there. You are from the ATL. Like I tell Mighty Hornet, let them Bamas fight their own fight. LOL. You don't see JR getting in the middle of my fellow SU folks arguing with JSU or other Ms folks when they get into that state vs state argument. I try to take the high road.

Fact of the matter is Houston > Bham. Folks support the Bama schools playing there for sure and when the weather is nice you can get a decent turnout. But even the locals didn't care too much about the FAMU vs SU game a few years back. I thought at least the idea of the Hundred and Jukebox would get a casual fan out. And that was Labor Day weekend. Time will tell if the SCG does okay in Houston. But now at least the naysayers of B-ham can put up or shut up. I do think if it is a nice matchup the casual SWAC alum who lives in Houston or close by will come out. I know it is not a popular move for the Bama schools. I would like to know how did those Presidents and ADs vote. Didn't seem like they raised too much saying.

The attendance wont be any different but the city of Houston is better Birmingham. Only time will tell how this works out....

I don't believe Birmingham pulling their funding b/c the championships have moved is sour grapes. They would be getting nothing for their investment. The question is....and no one has answered this...what is Houston giving the swac? No one expects attendance to increase, and everyone expects the cost to attend the game to increase. so if your now going to have to pay for office space and find a way to make up 500k how is this a smart move for the conference? It might indeed be a more enjoyable experience for the fan in the stands, but is that going to translate into increased attendance or more revenue?

I'm not hot. I haven't been to the swac championship game in a long while (a dry spell for the corn and bama state) so it doesn't matter if they hold it in Wimbley Stadium in London, as long as it's on the duece i'll still see it as I always do. As for basketball I haven't been to a tourney since it left birmingham. proximity matters. birmingham, jackson, new orleans, baton rouge... I find my way to swac events in those cities. I can go a be home in time to go to church on sunday.

It will depend on the participating schools. Just like with the SEC, if you got Vanderbilt vs. Mississippi State in the Championship game, you wouldn't expect as many fans to show as a Florida vs. Alabama or Georgia vs. LSU.

I understand what you mean but SEC championship will sell out no matter who is playing.

as far as the SU vs FAMU game... time plays a huge difference... You are NEVER going to get a big turnout during a Labor Day weekend game at 1pm.... how do you think the Miles game had 40k the next day on a Sunday night.

You don't know the details of a new SWAC office deal either, if there is one.

Assuming that office space will need to be paid for and 500K would have to made up for sounds good for your argument, but you don't know if it has any basis in reality. It's just a pro-Birmingham argument, that means nothing until the SWAC office does actually move and reveals the details of the move.

For all you know, the money could have been accounted for in the move of the championship games alone. But, we don't know right now.

The best we can do is assume Duer Sharp has weighed his options and made decisions that were best for the conference. If not, he will be fired. Simple as that.

Right now, you're just speculating and are asking us to speculate with you. Which is a useless exercise.

its going to be the usual bandfan excuses "ticket prices and parking are too high" "concessions too high" "too much to do in Houston" ... "everybody goes to high school games on the same day.

Miles and Stillman game at Legion Field puts up wayy better numbers than the two Texas HBCUs in the Nations 3rd largest city.... but once again I look forward to experiencing Houston.

Houston is the nation's 4th largest city.

I'm just asking the same question that was asked in this thread previously with no answer. You are right in that we don't know the details of the move. In fact we don't know if birmingham is going to withdraw their financial support. they just said they need to consider their options. so much of this thread is speculation but that hasn't stopped three pages from accumulating. If they have or will be able to secure financial commitments from the city of houston or they're able to grow the football and basketball championships in ways that they weren't in birmingham then it is a success but if they are not able to grow it and lose money on the venture then you can hate birmingham if you want..it'll still have been a bad arrangement. here's hoping they are successful.

As I said, you're asking questions that are not answered but you don't know if your own assertions are true.

You don't know if a deal has been made with Houston or any other city.

You're just assuming that it's going to be bad if the SWAC moves out of Birmingham but don't have any solid evidence that's the case.

Hopefully, Duer Sharp does have solid evidence and is making sound business decisions. But, until that's revealed, we will have to wait and see.
