Fallout From SCG Moving

Who gives a sh#t! We are now free of the waste land that is Bham. Greener pastures...if not Houston somewhere, anywhere but there.

I remember when the SWAC offices first moved from New Orleans to Birmingham.

Basically, the top floor of the A.G. Gaston Building was "gifted" to the SWAC as the official headquarters of the conference and Legion Field was practically free of charge for the SWAC championship football game.

Now fastforward to 2013 and the SWAC moves it's largest showcase that brought sales and tax revenue (hotel, rental car, eating, shopping, etc...) the city of Birmingham would now be losing out on that revenue stream so what is the purpose of the incentives the city gives to the SWAC now?

I totally understand the business aspect of the council's concerns so I would imagine the Council of Presidents and the SWAC office knowing that in advance and having a plan in place once this eventually came up.

The funniest thing to me is Birmingham saying they are keeping their $550K. Said it like it meant something. Like somebody gave a damn.

I am JROCK and approved this message. :emlaugh:

Has the City of Dallas provided any financial incentives to the Big 12, CUSA, Southland? I am just asking a question. The City of Birmingham does not provide a financial incentive to the SEC so that point is moot - even though the City and the SEC collaborate on various events and the City is a partner in times of need - for instance the City of Birmingham does not provide the SEC anything for their Baseball Tournament BUT the City of Hoover does - and im sure the City will still be a partner with the SWAC when it comes to using the Crossplex for the Indoor Track Champs - it might not be at the same level as it has been.

$500,000 a year does not break Bham but at the same time it would be assinine to give half a million to an entity with NO economic impact at all in return...and thats $500,000 in addition to office space, stadium usage, ancillary cost (police, etc...)....

No Dallas, Las Colinas, nor Addison offer those conferences a dime.. That's just where the conferences choose to set up shop... SEC Media Day brings in more money to B-Ham than they give the SWAC... The Magic City Classic brings money to B-Ham... If they have given the SWAC the money up front then yea be pissed.. But if you cutting the check after the fact then whats the problem.. put that money somewhere else... We dog the SWAC for not trying a new model.. Now that they do, everybody in Alabama is pissed... give me a break

What incentives is Houston offering?

That's the question... But if any of you took basic economics you got to look at it another way. All those Houston Swac fans are gonna show up just to see... That's money you(SWAC) can bank... The out of town fans are gonna bring money to Houston.. That's money they(Houston) can bank... We all are tired of cold, wet, dreary Birmingham.. No night life at all.. Now Houston is different.. Dome... Dome Dome

Yall will see just like with the MEAC/SWAC game. Birmingham is the best location for HBCU football.... Watch what I tell you. Even Jackson State/AAMU game did better in Birmingham than it will ever do in Jackson or Huntsville... same thing with Bama State and Jackson State (back in the Labor Day Classic games in the 90s)... All of those games had 40k plus.

Question, since Houston is so great and all the SWAC alumni are excited about SWAC football, why don't TXSU and PV numbers reflect the support you folks love to give? Just asking.........

its going to be the usual bandfan excuses "ticket prices and parking are too high" "concessions too high" "too much to do in Houston" ... "everybody goes to high school games on the same day.

Miles and Stillman game at Legion Field puts up wayy better numbers than the two Texas HBCUs in the Nations 3rd largest city.... but once again I look forward to experiencing Houston.

this is an ignorant comment.... so we dont leave Bama since we have never been to Houston? I live within 5 hours of Birmingham, Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, Charlotte, and Pensecola.... why would I need to go to 14 hours somewhere when I can hit up many other places much closer. That was a dumb statement...

whats "sour grapes about Bham not wanting to continue doling out this money to the SWAC with nothing in return? Surely, you wouldn't expect the city to continue giving at the same level before the signature events were moved out of Bham. Seems like a prudent decision by the Bham city council.

I can see it this way.

That is a good point.. That's the 4th round of the football playoffs round here... Trust me.. I will not be at the SWAC Championship game.... Oops....

We need to sue B'ham for damaging the SWAC Brand for 13 years. And where is that raggedy azzed dome that they used as an incentive to keep our top flight conference in that modern day Sodom Gomorrah? :emlaugh: How dare those deranged council persons allow this mess to play out in the media. Don't run your head just do it. :emlaugh: I'm going to call one of my friends down in New Orleans to put a root on them! :emlaugh:

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Birmingham city funding for the Southwestern Athletic Conference could be slashed or eliminated altogether following the college sport's conference decision to move its football and basketball championships to Houston, Texas.

Birmingham last year spent $500,000 on SWAC and is set to increase the amount to $550,000 under Mayor William Bell's proposed 2014 budget.

But several council members question why the city would continue to provide money for the Birmingham-based conference that is shipping its major events away from Birmingham.

"The city has shown good will toward them. Certainly we're not responsible for promoting their conference, but we have been a solid partner," Council President Roderick Royal said. "But if we cannot have certain tournaments and or the championship games in basketball and football, then the city needs to move to terminate the contract and let Houston pick up the weight."

The city also provides downtown office space for SWAC.

"If there is no bottom line taxpayer benefit then the city should move along. I would feel that way about all of those venues that receive taxpayer dollars," Royal said. "That's unfortunate, but let the die roll and 'goodbye.'"

1st)............. I thought when they announced they was moving all the sporting events to Houston, I thought the SWAC offices was going also.

#2) This is the shat I'm talking about. Did these fools actually think a city was going to keep giving them free sahat, kick in money, and watch another city reap the benefits? I see our conference leaders have the survival instincts of a Doh-Doh bird.

Who do these fools think they are? That translates into a donation of $55,000.00 per school. Tell them council folks JROCK said, "you not the boss of the SWAC!" :emlaugh:

The Big 12 is stationed in Dallas... They rotated their championship game... C-USA is based in Dallas.. So what... The Southland conference is based in Dallas.. They don't have a team within 200 miles and most or further than that... 500K... WTF... If that's breaking B-Hams bank then they need to leave it alone anyway.. That's fish fry money... Big Time College athletics isn't for everybody....

Man.....................

Ain't no defense in this since B-Ham was giving them free rent and then stacking money on top of that. I'm sure the Southland and Big 12 don't get free office spaces in Dallas and that is the difference. They paying for their offices and services. . The SWAC was getting B-Ham welfare............FREE rent and a half million dollar SWAC EBT CARD..

Looking at Prairie View and Texas Southern's attendence figures should hold no bearing why moving the SWAC championship game to Houston. Why should it?

If the championship game is say Jackson State vs Southern, do you think Houston area J-State Tigers and Jaguars as well as Jackson area fans and Baton Rouge area fans will say to themselves, "Why should we go support our teams in Houston, TX for a chance to win the conference championship when Prairie View or Texas Southern fans won't?

When Prairie View made it to the championship game in 2009, they had a very nice turnout despite the elements as well as Texas Southern just a year later in 2010.

The SWAC office is not basing moving the championship game's attendance primarily or even secondarily on Prairie View or Texas Southern fans to make the attendance what it is.
