Metro Atlanta population hit 5.45 million in 2012

Part of the Beltway/Belt line project that I looked at a year or so ago had some of these these things in bold included among other things. I will agree to disagree with you on not needing this. I do agree with you that it is much more palatable to travel in non rush hour traffic though if nothing is going wrong like a traffic accident, whether etc.

It's already been proven that adding more roads does nothing to improve traffic here... which is why TSPLOST was centered on public transportation and NOT highways.

From what I have seen, the city has been making proper steps for the expected growth. The infrastructure is there and the state continues to pump money into the metro area, including Raleigh-Durham, for new highways and development. I just don't want our traffic to resemble Atlanta's. Harris Blvd and I-85 are horrible during rush hour.

LOL @ the infrastructure is there. Charlotte would absolutely collapse upon itself had it had the type of influx of people that Atlanta had in such a short period of time. The Atlanta metro area is still MUCH larger than Charlotte and is facing issues but you think Charlotte wont... alrighty then. And this is with Atlanta having 4 major interstates..also, as far as the economy thing, we've seen how cities that build their entire being on one industry fare when that industry isn't doing well.

Raleigh, NC was recently named the fastest growing city in the past 12 years. What I like about North Carolina, instead of one area growing, it seems like there are several areas in North Carolina that are growing, which is probably why North Carolina went blue in President Obama's first election and came close as a swing state in his second election. Instead of diluting their votes in one large metro area, Democrats are gaining political power throughout the entire State of North Carolina. Out of 13 house seats in North Carolina, the Democrats control 7 of those seats, whereas out of 14 house seats in Georgia, the Democrats control only 5 of those seats. I guess North Carolina Republicans have a lot of work to do in gerrymandering the state back in their favor. :emlaugh:

So are you saying Atlanta should be punished for being one of the first southern cities to set a model for growth for blacks? Lets be honest, Atlanta has been growing rapidly since the 50's. truth be told 99% of the south was still stuck into Jim Crow control and thought processes until Maynard Jackson laid a model for growth by basically helping minorities gain wealth by city contracts and leveling the playing field. You folks can go on and on about how your city is growing in 2013, but show me a model of success for 50 plus year like Atlanta has done. Then and only then will I listen.

Did you see me type that Atlanta should be punished for being the fastest growing city for AA? The vast number of AA that move to Georgia are punishing themselves by piling up in the Atlanta Metro Area, while the rest of the state stay the most redneckish places in the country. Mayor Maynard Jackson might have laid out the model for growth for minorities, which worked find for Atlanta and many other cities in this country, but somehow that didn't resonate to other areas of Georgia. I guess North Carolina should be considered the model state for minority growth, which is why states like Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are not interested in vast growth rates, because they know minorities would move in exponentially.

Dude, that TSPLOST project was centered on 1/2 roads and 1/2 transit. I sat in on several of those mass conference calls.

Road IMPROVEMENTS, there were no new highways included in TSPLOST. The only thing even related to interstates was improving 2 of the interchanges which still would've had little to no effect on the major traffic areas.

Seems like Atlanta is about to experience what Los Angeles has been experiencing for years. Expanding interstates, highways, and roads are okay, but a large metro area like Atlanta needs multiple modes of transportation, such as expanding Atlanta's metro rail system. Not only rail lines take up less space than interstates, highway, and roads, it can effectively and efficiently move way more people than the equivalent number of vehicles. I'm sure some areas, such Forsyth County don't want the transit traffic.

please explain

Have you seen the racial makeup of Forsyth County lately? I've never seen a county that's growing that fast and is within a metro area that has the country's second largest Black population and still remains 95% White and 0.70% Black. All this Black talk about Atlanta but Black folks there still seems to be scared of few rednecks that live in a county where Atlanta receives most of its drinking water. Seems like when Oprah and Rev. Hosea Williams went there, Black folks in Atlanta would have started a movement to change the mindset in that redneck county and that's been approximately 16 years now.

so, your comments were based on 1 county, huh?

interesting comments

Now that you mentioned it, I do remember them talking about using the funds for maintenance/improvement of roads and bridges. I know that there was well over a 100 uses for the money. It's a moot point now since the voters rejected it (haven't changed my mind though, will still agree to disagree regardless of what any study may say).

One (1) county that is made up of some of the most racist folks in this country, but is within a metro area with the second largest Black population in the country, which is something I've never seen anywhere else. Have you ever been to Forsyth County? Hall County which is just north of Forsyth is not that much different: 80.75% White, 7.27% Black or African American out of approximately 140,000 people.

wow, with all the problems/issues we face in our community, just how important do you think it is to "start a movement to change the mindset in a redneck county"

c'mon man. You're trying way too hard. If you don't like Atl, for whatever reason, that's cool, so be it, but you aint gotta be pulling up old videos from last century from a racist from a predominantly white county (as if Atl has the market cornered on people/places like that) :retard:
Whatever issue you have with Atl, it seems to be a deep one. I knew you hate the mighty FALCONS, but damn bruh....

This has nothing to do with Atlanta or the funky chickens, this has more do with recognizing the obvious, which is Black people diluting their political power by jamming themselves into large metro areas while racist rednecks have just as much or more power in less populated areas. The balance of power is probably like 10 to 1 with 10 Blacks living in Atlanta equaling 1 White in Forsyth County. We can't make that power shift on the day of election, we must demand it well ahead of time. And we always wonder why they always come out on top after elections.

There is nothing wrong with Georgia's AA political muscle. Blacks represent about 30% of Georgia's population. Georgia has 4 AA in our congressional delegation of 14 which is 29% black representation.

Georgia Congressional Districts

District 1 Jack Kingston

District 2 Sanford Bishop

District 3 Lynn Westmoreland

District 4 Hank Johnson

District 5 John Lewis

District 6 Tom Price

District 7 Rob Woodall

District 8 Austin Scott

District 9 Doug Collins

District 10 Paul Broun

District 11 Phil Gingrey

District 12 John Barrow

District 13 David Scott

District 14: Tom Graves

With 30% Black population, I'm sure there's at least 20% or more White folks and others that vote Democrat. And Georgia only have 5 Democrats in congress and none in the Senate.

Wow, not that it matters but district 13, 4 & 5 are metro Atlanta and have predominately black COUNTIES sitting in them. I'm not sure about district 2 (it's sitting in the southeast/south-central area of the state). There is only 1 black senator in the entire country and he was APPOINTED. All states in the union are still predominately white hence the senate situation.

Imagine if a few thousand Blacks in those predominately Black Districts around Atlanta moved to District 7 which consist of Gwinnett County and the southern part of Forsyth County. There might not be a Black congressman elected in District 7, but I'm sure it could change from red to blue.

One would think that only Republicans are bat crap crazy folks, but after seeing all the excuses coming from so-called Black Democrats about living in majority Black metro areas, one would have to wonder, what exactly did the Civil Rights Movement accomplish? The real irony to this, Atlanta is the birth place of Martin Luther King, Jr., which would make one wonder what would have happen if Rosa Parks decided to do the normal scared black person thing by giving up her seat to some White man on a public transportation bus in Montgomery, AL or if the Black students from NCA&T decided not to eat at a lunch counter in Greensboro, NC? I guess there are still large metro areas in this country with a majority Black population surrounded by small pockets of racist White folks that the Black population is completely afraid of.

District 2 contains Columbus, Albany and Macon.

Who is going to pay for that move? Forsyth County is also VERY expensive to live in. The rest of your argument is just wtf, what is even the logic for your posts? lol...why should black folks pack up and move to a suburb 45 minutes north of the city when you have a large contingency of people that are black here that rely on public transportation, which Forsyth doesn't have? You want to see the average cost of homes in South Forsyth?

http://www.homes.com/Real_Estate/GA/County/FORSYTH/

That answers your question as to why the black population is so low there. Just like it is in Peachtree City, just like it is in the majority of the other wealthy areas in the city that don't have apartments or transportation. And did you really bring Rosa Parks into it? :emlaugh::emlaugh::emlaugh::emlaugh::emlaugh::emlaugh: Yea, being afraid of them is the reason why. I guess it wasn't the reason why more blacks moved into Cobb and South Gwinnett when in fact they used to be the exact same way but less expensive and offer public transportation ey?

It's a pity that some folks are too damn scared to travel to the place that provides them one of the most important natural resources that support their life every day. I guess Black kids in the Atlanta Metro area would never get to visit the source of their water, which is a common field trip in a lot of places. I agree with the racist White man in the Oprah video when he said, "there's a big difference between a N-word person and Black person", but the way I see it, a N-word person is too damn scared to stand up to a few racist White people. High cost of living and no mass transportation system are just excuses, because when I lived in Los Angeles, Black folks lived and commuted from the Palmdale/Lancaster area with no direct access to the mass transportation system, which the Palmdale/Lancaster area is twice as far from the City of Los Angeles then Forsyth County is to the City of Atlanta and I'm pretty sure there are other large metro areas in this country where Black folks live in high price communities with no mass transportation system to the inner city. In most cases, people with money look for high price communities to live in with no access to the mass transportation system, so they don't have to deal with strangers from the inner city coming near their home. An honest person would have said, "I'm just too damn scared of racist Whites people to live outside of a Black community".

And by the way, unlike most Black folks in Atlanta, Rosa Parks wasn't afraid to stand up against a racist White bus driver.
