It's official: Hornets to become New Orleans Pelicans

New Orleans Hornets owner Tom Benson, keeping a promise to rebrand the team he bought from the NBA last April, announced Thursday afternoon that the team will become the New Orleans Pelicans next season, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported on its website, nola.com.

The NBA's Board of Governors already has approved the name change, and, as had been reported, the Pelicans' team colors will be blue, red and gold.

Yahoo! Sports initially reported the story on Wednesday.

"This isn't something that was just done overnight," Benson said, according to nola.com. "This is a long process. We are not just changing the name to change the name. The Hornets name came from Charlotte. That fits in with Charlotte. It doesn't fit into New Orleans, La., or our area here. The Hornets don't mean anything here. We needed something that symbolizes New Orleans and Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. And nothing does that better than this name."

The name change was made after scouring more than 100 possible names in a search for the perfect fit, Hornets officials told nola.com.

St Louis used to be home to the Cardinals in both football and baseball. Same thing with NYC and the Giants in football and baseball.
 
Good thing they change their name from the Hornets, because every time I think of a Hornet, I get a vision of a team getting the dog sh!t kicked out of them by a small school with a tiger as its mascot.

Dude, we have hornets flying around down here. The name was fine. The Pelicans are a isht bird. Now we're stuck with a isht bird for a mascot. That is why I don't like Benson. He's senile.
 
Uncle Booker has a hornet spray that kills hornets on the spot and also kills future hornets for generations to come. It kills hornets even if they try to build a new nest. :lol: :emlaugh:

Yeah, yeah. I hope you like the New Orleans isht birds, cause that's the new mascot. Don't no pelican scare anyone. Hell, I don't even see any anymore. Did they all die out?

Don't know about the Hawks, but the Falcons scared the isht out of a lot of so called Christians (Saints). Had them even praying that they don't win a SB in their town. Forgot all about praying for the sick and shut-in and other miracles and started praying against an NFL team. LOL!!!!!! Some saints.

Other than the Ravens, have you ever known any other bird team to win the Super Bowl?

(Eagles, Cardinals, Seahawk, Failcons)
