elementary school shooting

My gun control proposal is that there needs to be better background checks, including checks done at gun shows. The checks need to include whether the person has a history of mental illness, and whether anyone in that person's household has a history of mental illness.

I agree, but you first have to put in-place measures to identify those with mental illnesses. You can have all the background checks in-place, but if mental illness identification is not available, background checks does not do any good.

I can understand looking into whether the person who is trying to purchase a firearm has a Mental Illness, but other people in their household??? That is really stretching it. To be honest, there is nothing we can do to stop folks from mass shootings. Absolutely nothing. Same thing with drunk driving, etc. You can enact all the gun laws you want, it still won't stop anything. That is down side of freedom and democracy.

Sure it is. Mentally ill people should be removed from their family homes and placed in a hospital where they are under 24 hour supervision, which is pretty much how it was done before Reagan drastically cut funding to mental health hospitals that did exactly that.

But wouldn't folks have to determine what types of mental illness a person has before deciding whether or not a person can buy a gun? I mean, many psychological disorders fall under the mental illness category. Insomnia, sex addiction, male erectile dysfunction disorder, shuttering, people who have phobias are forms of mental illnesses/disorders.

Obviously, those who have personality disorders, mood disorders shouldn't be allowed to buy guns. I think one has to distinguish between the type of mental illness.

Hell no. There are many types of Mental Illness. Hell, anxiety and mild-depression fall into that category. Should a person be put in a hospital with 24 hr supervision if they only have an anxiety disorder? What about dealing with panic attacks or fight-or-flight syndrome?

Most definitely.

That should be left up to the mental health professionals to determine, but there are some people with CERTAIN mental illness that definitely need 24 hour supervision.

Most homicides are in areas where they are anti-gun laws. So your logic doesn't make sense and your facts are wrong. And yes I'm a pro-gun and pro-self defense advocate.

Laws and enforcement of the laws are two different things. Mrs. Lanza was a gun enthusiast. She probably bought the guns for self protection. But look at how that turned out. She was killed by the guns she thought would protect her and unleashed carnage upon babies. Look at the stats from countries with the least amount of guns and the homicide rate.

That's like saying the countries with the least number of cars have a low automobile death rate. But let's look at Switzerland for instance.....

In Switzerland, every male between the age of 20 and 30 has to serve either in the military or militia, after their service ends they get to keep their assault rife in their homes. Switzerland has 45.7 guns per every 100 residents, which is only behind the United States, Serbia and Yemen. The entire country of Switzerland only had 53 homicides last year, we had more than that just here in Jackson, MS.

The reason why our crime rate is so high is because of the drug problem we have in this country. Over 85% of inmates in our system are there because of drug related crimes. Just look at the inner city homicide rate in just the black community. We are killing each other over drugs/drug related conflict.

The reason why other countries with less guns have lower homicide rates is because their drug problem is not as dire as ours is, period!

Another example of how gun control's affects can be seen in Australia. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent. Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns! While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns.

The sad thing is, homicidal nuts will always be among us, if they don't have guns, then they will use fertalizer like Timothy McVey did, or boxcutters and airplanes like the 911 terrorists did.

Mak, most citizens in this country expect something to be done about the proliferation of weapons.

BTW, have you attempted to buy nitrate since the OK City carnage. Restrictions have been imposed and even farmers are monitored with their purchase of nitrate and other explosive making materials. That is all most of the public is asking.

The constitution protects gun ownership. The constitution also protects free speech but you cannot holler fire in a theater. So, for safety purposes constitutional mandates can accommodate restrictions. That makes sense most Americans.

Man, you can make explosives out a lot more stuff than nitrate. You are missing the point, I can name a lot of other things that homicidal maniacs can use to kill someone with, but that is a whole other argument.

What can we possibly do about this to prevent it from happening again? More gun laws? This nut broke at least 10 before he fired a shot. Are we going to do what Australia did and go around and force everybody to turn in their guns? See how that turned out for them? Junebug, Pookie along with Billy Ray and Cleetus aint turning in theirs.

All I hear is "something has to be done!"

What do YOU propose?

Waiting......

It seems like people do not like government oversight, especially those that have something to hide, such as homicidal maniacs and mentally ill people.

Mak, Israel limits the purchase of 50 rounds of amo per person a year and only hand guns can be purchased by private citizens after extensive background checks. That's a start. Semi-automatic or other military style weapons should be restricted. Gun shows and private sales should be required to go through background checks. All Internet sales of gun and amo should be prohibited.

I admit there is no total solution that would prevent the killing of innocent people. The students at The univ of Colorado refusal live in dorms with guns is an indication of the public turning against the pro gun lobbyists position. Like it or not. The public demand something be done.

I believe what Mak is trying to say along with all the other NRA card carrying members, they don't want the government deep into their private life just because they are gun owners, but what they fail to realize, a lot of homicidal lunatics use that excuse as a mean of hiding who they really are. But if a person has nothing to hide and wanting to own guns, they should be more than willing to give the government a history of their psychological profile.

"guns don't kill ppl, it's stupid motherfuggers with guns that kill ppl"

Now everyone wants to tighten the guns when it happens to their "own", Obama speech was horrible, dude got on T.V. for that and you had a record setting murder rate in Chicago, your home town and I don't recall him crying or any, those were kids, minors being killed..c'mon..America (white folks) are a trip, Malcolm X said it best...

If they shine light on "everything" shat wouldn't be as bad as it is...

Primarily gang members killing each other vs 1st graders being picked off by a lunatic like they are on a video game.

So now we are pointing out folks who chose to fight and kill over dope and money vs innocent kids who don't even understand what crime is? Help me understand that logic? Thanks!!!!

Guns make it a whole lot easier to kill people.

I am sick of people trying to tie this together Cee. I have been arguing with people about this all weekend SMH....While death is death and as humans we should mourn appropriately, there is a big difference between what occurs in Chicago and what happened to those children in CT, or the ones in Japan (or in the Middle East for that matter). Until the Chicago gang bangers change their mentality and quit glorifying certain lifestyles those killings won't stop. They are killing each other over dope and money (reference the video posted on here of them a few months ago SMH). Not the same situation as what happened to those innocent children (except the few incidents where a young black innocent child was caught up in the crossfire).

"is we hurting, boss?" That's all I see in the ramblings thusfar.

Maybe the states will put warning stickers on cars/trucks too since they too cause innocent loss of life ala most notarized case involving murdered, I mean, he fell and bumped his head while riding w/ his dallas cowboy teammate.

I want to hear that 2nd stanza of kum-bah-yah soon. P88 loves to see black ppl who know how to entertain, like anglos like to see as well. :emlaugh: Run it 2nd line fiddla' lol.

BTW, My heart goes out to the 30yr old black male who was murdered in dallas 2 nights ago. Folx have been hunting black american males a looooong time. :(

You keep missing the dang point........nothing you said would have stopped this tragedy! You can put all the restrictions you want to on peoples ammo supply, types of guns, whatever. Criminals are still going to do what they want to do. Either you don't get it, or you refuse to get it.

NO, what I am saying is that everything proposed thus far will not solve the problem, only make it worse. Crime actually went up when Clinton passed the Brady Bill. As I have said too many times before, DRUGS are the main cause of gun violence in this country, and unless we are gonna start putting chips in people's skulls to determine when they are gonna snap, you will have to deal with the psychos that snaps.

Again, the availability of Drugs in this country is the crux of our crime problem; and why do we have a drug problem? Drugs have been illegal since their inception, yet people don't have a problem getting them....the same will hold true for guns.
