Texas Southern Band Suspended Over Hazing Report

Dr. H., said a weeks ago, some of these "fools" will never learn.

I am not understanding, if you TSU, know it was only a few week ago SAU was in trouble and a few months ago FAMU was in trouble. Why in the world, afe you thinking?

...that they won't get caught. Just like ALL college kids (including us when we were in college). It won't happen to "me". "I" won't get caught. :noidea:

Look this is not just college kids thinking they are immortal. The biggest problem is generational peer pressure. Former band members pass their prime preaching to impressionable "kids" about how they use to do it. And because they don't do it like they did it, then they haven't earned the right or the respect to be called "insert your band nickname here". Traditionally, these false prophets were nobodys in the band or their respective organizations, trying to create a legend to some kids that unfortunately look up to former members. Stop letting these cats around your students. Get them out of the band rooms, practices, and keep them at a distance for their performances. Their lies are poison to a changing culture. Start bringing in the former members who may have went through that but are supportive of a new direction to share their stories and why they should not do it. To many people taking pride in the beating and not the beat.

I call bullshat.
They hear the stories but nobody has told them to go out and beat someones azz in 2012 or they won't be accepted. These are just mofo's that are going to do whatever they want to do no matter what. The same mofos that look like idiots with their pants off their azz but won't listen when you tell them pull them up because they look like a damm fool.

Ole schoolers tell mofos all the time that ole school stories need to stay in ole school.
You honestly think grown azz people are going to go to jail over some dumb azz 18 to 21 year old kids? They are told all the time to change with the times. They are told all the time that instead of the worst thing that can happen to a frat or organization caught hazing, that there would be no line or suspension for a semester or two. They are told these days, people are handing out lawsuits and jail sentences now.

Don't blame bullshat on ole school.
Blame the new school mofos that are doing the shat. If a mofo is not accepted, it's not because they didn't get a azzwhipping. It is because they didn't do shat, MARCHING OR MUSICALLY, when it counted on the field.

Exactly!! And these mofos aint never heard a story from old heads on how they sent somebody to the hospital by beating them to death or with a 2x4. Hell I know when I was a crab in the Jukebox, if KKPSI even heard somebody whether it was frat or not using some wood on a crab it would be some consequences and repercussions. If anything the MENTAL FEAR of the upperclassmen getting in your isht was enough. They made us exercise as punishment. Wasn't no beat downs doing on. Perfect example for us was "Say Crab, why you on the grass" "Get down and give me 20 or get in TV position. LOL. Hell we did the same isht in the military. LOL. These kids just have taken it to another level. If folks were going to the hospital after beatdowns back in the day, it wouldn't have taken to the 2000s for it to be an issue. We had hazing no doubt. But not at this level. The sad thing is, we had more hard core mofos in the band back then. Cats straight from the projects. I know we did at SU. Half of our New Orleans crew which was the majority of the band were from the hood. Maybe that's why mofos were not going to get beat down like talking about. LOL.

If these cats are taking stories they done heard from the 80s and 90s and run with them to beat somebody down, then they need their arses whooped themselves. We also heard stories from the 60s and 70s cats. None of us tried to do what they did. Hell Doc Greggs told us how they used to throw mofos in the lake in the middle of the campus back in the day and even did him when he became the director in 69 even though he had already gone through whatever they did in the 40s when he marched. But he told us, we better not do that isht. LOL. We knew better. We knew we couldn't do what we HEARD the 70s cats got away with. We also had enough common sense to realize that things had changed from back in the day. We respected the old heads coming around and such. But we were like we ain't them cats. So we can't do that isht. Whether they thought we were hard or not was irrelevant. I know I have personally told cats who came after us, that you can't do none of the stuff folks before you did. When I pledged PSI, we could walk line and be seen out. But even then, the rules had pretty much started changing. They wanted pledge lines to only walk for about 4-5 weeks. Obviously a lot of folks got around that with underground pledging before actually letting the line walk in public. But it was none of that whole semester of pledging like we heard about in the 70s. We knew those days were gone and nobody was trying to buck the system. We always had enough folks who were leaders in the band/frat who would curtail that kind of stuff. Anyway, I don't know what the answer is today. But at this rate, it will not be any more bands if folks don't cut it out. After they do away with bands, they will move on to the sports teams because make no mistake about it. Them mofos are hazing too.

Yall full of shat! I stand outside of the stadium as the Jukebox march to the stadium, sit behind the band at the game, use to stop by the bandroom with former Jukes, etc... and listen to them tell current band members those stories and explain that's the reason the band ain't what it used to be and that's what needs to be done. Although, many of these guys were zipped from the band, it wasn't until after someone complained about it. And real talk, all of that TV position, etc is still hazing. To my knowledge, the best hazers came from the band. These young cats trying match stories. And then didn't wake and start whooping arse one day, that gentlemen was a learned and supported behavior. Now I'm not inferring that it was passed down from every decade of band members but that shat didn't just start happening in the new millenium, it just progressively worse as folks were left to their own devices. Oh, the ole-schoolers may say don't do that now but that's not what they told the crabs under them and the cycle continued. Now an ole-schooler (probably a reformed hazer as I'm sure some of you are) wants to come back and preach 20 years later because they realize that its not worth it. Honestly, it's been swept under the rug time after time and would've continued that way it the SU, JSU, and then FAMU incidents had not become national news. I know what I've seen, heard, and experienced first hand. Never said it was all Ole-schoolers fault but don't tip the scale just one direction and say that it's the kids that are all effed up. Everyone needs to own this problem.

Shat.......You full of shat.............and excuses.
I was told those same stories but never killed anyone. By the time I left JSU, shat was not even the same as it was when I came in as for hazing. Ole School not the ones in the band, running the band, IN 2012. At JSU, Ole school don't even hang around "new school." I have not had contact with the BOOM in over 20 years. Hell............I DON'T EVEN GO ON CAMPUS. Hell...........At the games in memorial, Ole school don't even sit on the home side. hell........I don't even march with the Alumni Band at Homecomming. Last time I did that was Homecomming 1992.

You on here, beating your chest all high and mighty with everything Holy, basically saying people that was not crap in the band then or "reformed hazers", make me think you were one of the ones that could not cut it and now you trying to "reform" yourself into this wise ole owl type of figure that never, EVER did anything shady. Own up to your crap your HIGHNESS, OH HOLY PERFECT ONE.

Carry on.

Dude kill that noise. It aint but a few old school mofos being saying that dumb isht to new band members over the years. Just like it was only a few did it when I marched. All the old heads had stories and that is what they were... stories. Yes TV position was hazing NOW but not then. We did it in the Navy too. So yeah it is. But not to the extent that you kill or put somebody in the hospital doing it. No one ever said no hazing happened in the 80s. It did. But that aint no excuse to not know that YOU CAN'T DO THAT ISHT NO MORE. And it started way before the 2000s got here. New rules were being implemented yearly until you have what you have now. I have sat behind the band with my FRAT BRUHS and OLD SCHOOL JUKES I marched with and of course folks have criticized the band. But the band aint the same because of different reasons. Any fool knows that. It aint about hazing. The things some folks have problems with has nothing to do with getting your arse kicked to be in the Juke. We could care less about that. We just want to see a good band do their thing. I have never personally told any band member who came after me, that you need to do what we did outside of exercising your fat arses to get in shape or telling some guys to work on long tones to increase their lung capacity and power. Simple stuff. Most of my LBs are the same way. We are not reformed hazers. We just have matured and understand what you could not do under the rules. We didn't have these type of rules back then that they do now. But we also had COMMON SENSE not to try to hurt somebody to send them to the hospital. I never had any upperclassman try to beat me down in the Juke. I came in 84. My section leader didn't allow no foolishness in the trumpet section. He ran that mofo like he wanted. Now did we have some things folks consider hazing now go on.....YES. But it was not hazing then. Doc thing was not to put your hands on the Freshmen. I never did. Not one time. Did it happen to some folks. Sure it did. I also saw some Freshman kick some overzealous non playing upperclassman arse every year for being stupid. Wasn't no retaliation or nothing. Wait I better not say that either. Now some Freshman going to read this and say I should whoop an upperclassman's arse if he tries to haze me.......you know what. Yep he should.

Anyway, yall can carry on with the excuses. They know the rules. If they choose to listen to certain old heads who have embellished stories like a drunk Uncle at the family reunion. LOL. Then let them keep on until they are dead, locked up or put out of school. We all listened to stories from old school. We heard them too. We didn't duplicate that isht we heard. After going through the MUD was banned. We didn't try it no more either. Over with. Done. Let it go. I don't think no less of the Fall 85 class because they didn't go through what I did. They still were a beast of a class. These cats today just want to put it on us old school cats from 25 years ago who don't even be around the band unless we come to a game and still aint really around no more than to visit with each other who marched with us or talk to the staff. They don't listen to us about other isht on how to improve, why do they listen about some embellished old school band story? I wish a mofo would come say JR told some old stories about the 80s and that's why I hazed in 2012. Really? They better listen to Mr Jackson and not us. LOL.

You shole is right Frat. Same for us old Jukes from the same era as you. The ones that are probably old school to these cats are early 2000 and some 90s cats who still filled with that in them. When I head to the bandroom, I go see Mr. J as my frat brother and nothing else. Same as I did when I would stop off to see Doc when he was band director. Don't have time or the energy to be telling them cats on how to run their own band. I did my time. I played within the rules of the 80s. They need to do the same. Hell the only cats hearing our stories are normally Jukes who came after us but already have their Jackets and are done with the band. Don't ever remember any of us sitting down with current band members at the time and telling them about what we did. Usually it is the younger frat who asks us older heads some stuff. But heck them fools done finished with the band themselves.

Next thing they gone blame Doc if he comes around and says they threw me in Lake Kernan when I was a crab and when I was band director. LOL. I guess Mr Jackson will be the blame if someone over hears a convo between him and his old band mates from the 70s talking their stories too.

First of all I was never in the band and I'm definitely not pretending to be the one without sin. As a matter of fact, I made a point to express that I know these things from experience. But I've had the pleasure to sit down with Mr. J and other 4yr band members to hear their take on these matters. These are some of their very concerns and issues that have been expressed. I'm not trying to blame anyone group. I get it you don't agree because you my consider yourself old school but the fact is that this a systemic problem and its more than just the kids. Not talking about anyone specifically on this board but it does happen more than you think.

Total cosign on this -- TOTAL. Everything JR said is totally on point.

And let me bust another bubble.

It's very fashionable to say that "Hazing got worse when the process went underground." SHULLBIT! Greek hazing was out of control when it was "above ground" ... that's why it got banned. I can tell you many personal stories of broken bones, ruptured eardrums, busted ribs and such that happened when everything was "above ground." The primary difference was these acts weren't criminal offenses back then so there was a "wink-wink"/"boys will be boys" attitude about it. There was no monitoring or control being exercised that suddenly disappeared when MIP was implemented. Taking it underground didn't make it worse -- taking it underground happened because Greeks didn't want to play by the new rules. It's gotten worse because this new generation of kids is out of control and have no regard for anything except what THEY want to do.

One last thing: I don't understand this BAND hazing. During my time in the Juke, we didn't have time for it. Our section leader Tracy D. Dyer was an engineering major and he didn't play hazing but not being able to play your part or not driving 100% of the time was UNACCEPTABLE. But he didn't haze -- he led. And you didn't dare disappoint. This whole "section phi section" crap is a new construct that simply didn't exist and I still don't understand it. You are either a crab or a Jaguar -- why pledge a section???

This is the root of band hazing right here. You have these people that, have no ambition to graduate and whose identity is being in the band, come up with idea of pledging a section. Dumbest thing ever because it doesn't help the band. I crabbed in 89 and my mentor, Cedric Stroy, prepared us for the band by working us out in the morning. The Marching Human Jukebox was very physical and that is why girls could not make the band. It was physically demanding. But there was a method to the madness. And it had nothing to do with someone putting their hands on you. 1st, KKPsi ran the band and everything went through them.( you couldn't be a section leader, drum major, or band captain unless you were Psi.) They were the true leaders and servants of the band. When you gotta cup of water, someone in KKPSI gave it to you. So if there was some excessive hazing, Psi handled that. That is why there are NO discipline problems in the Marching Human Jukebox. The band takes cars of that. Either you are a crab or you are an upperclassmen.

2nd, the biggest form of discipline was exercising. Because of our marching style and the way we hold our instruments, you had to be in shape or else you were not going to make the field. That is why there was a lot of push-ups, running, sit ups, marching and tv position. We would have to march from jones hall to the band room with our instruments in cases, holding over our heads or with your elbows out(up position), taking the long way. But, they were getting us in shape. We worked out more than the football team. I'm not even going to get into the cymbal players marching with the bricks and cinder blocks or doing push ups to the fight song because you we're late for practice. You were GUARANTEED to lose weight in the Human Jukebox. It was physically impossible for a female to survive the rigors of band practice.

Now, you had the renegades that would try to be extreme with certain things, but they wouldn't last long. Now, I have NEVER seen someone take an object and hit a freshman with it. I wouldn't have allowed it, because it is uncalled for. I got my jacket in 92 and I never put my hand on a crab. Doc would go down the line in sections to expose sub par upperclassmen, then tell the crabs " that's who you are about let whip your azz. You need to have that freshman teach you how to play!"

Texas Southern University punished 19 members of its Ocean of Soul marching band Tuesday in connection with a hazing investigation that confirmed off-campus paddling.

Ten upperclassmen were found guilty of beating nine freshmen, according to TSU spokeswoman Eva Pickens. All of the students were trumpet players and the hazing was confined to that section of the band, Pickens said.

The students who were paddled were not seriously injured, she said.

Pickens said the juniors and seniors were suspended from the university through Dec. 31, had their band scholarships revoked, and were required to leave the campus. The nine freshmen were given letters of reprimand, but were allowed to keep their scholarships.

Fair punishment to the upperclassmen involved. The freshmen involved should have had their scholarships taken as well.

Good job to TSU for handling this in a proper manner.
