Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Better?

Re: Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Bette

Nobody cares about FCS as a whole besides the fans of the schools involved. Even App State is only known as the school that beat Michigan (sigh). There is some benefit to scheduling better and you would be hard pressed to find a single person on here who agrees with the 9-game mandate, but SWAC schools aren't going to start making money over foot by playing the likes of Georgia Southern. As far as troubled athletes go, the occasional transfer of a former FBS player with a checkered past is hardly indicative of the overall recruiting philosophies of SWAC schools.

And we know of plenty of FBS schools that have done the same thing.

Re: Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Bette

I said it could be of financial benefit in the long-term. I honestly don't know how many SWAC fans know how good/the importance of some of the better FCS programs. But, if such games are promoted correctly, they can be successful.

That depends on which of those schools you're playing. There are a few that have good attendance and fanbases, but by and large, most of them couldn't sell out my backyard. Sam Houston played for the FCS title last year, they averaged 8000 fans a game. They didn't crack 10,000 for a single playoff game.

Re: Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Bette

About App State... There's no way in hell a home and home with them wouldn't sell out both stadiums.

Now you know that depends on the school that would be participating in it.

Yeap. I just can't see SU fans just rushing to buy tickets for Sam Houston State like they would for Jackson State.

Re: Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Bette

It depends what schools the big transfers land at...mathieu at a SWAC school changes the whole dynamic and if he's at one that goes to the right markets, it's a game-changer like McNair

The average FCS is a regional PWC where half their alumni would rather attend the big-state school and the blacks there are there because it sounds good on paper and friends but their hearts aren't into it...have yet to meet the ultimate black Southland fan whose fired up for his road trip to Conway, Arkansas :emlaugh:

The black FCS HBCUS have the market cornered in terms of interest....PWCs have started to create classics to garner interest but a big-time transfer just considering a SWAC school makes major headlines as that's unique

Well... they did break their attendance record for the Montana game. 12k+. Still didn't get a sellout.

May be true in Arkansas but most definitely not in GA. You'll be hard pressed to find many black folk here that care more about Fort Valley, CAU, Morehouse or Albany State football than they do about Auburn, Alabama or UGA. And Georgia Southern draws like 25K per game..with no classics.

Georgia Southern Attendance average was 17,701 ranked #11 behind #3 Jackson State 23,166 and #8 FAMU 18,746. The aforementioned numbers were not tallied with classics included by the NCAA (you can go to their website to see the complete list)

Ok, that's fine. But, like I mentioned Appalachian St. has an apparel deal with Nike that is outfitting them with Nike Combat uniforms. I'm sure Nike pays out even to FCS schools more than Russell Athletic. So, that would be more income for HBCUs if they step up their competition w/in the FCS ranks, which would increase their exposure, and lets be real the kids you're recruiting like to outfitted in Nike gear.

You do realize that any team in the country can buy and wear these uniforms if they so desire, right? It's not like Nike singled out App State for these uniforms. Even high school teams wear them.

Starts with leadership. The OP used App State as a benchmark. We went up their and kicked them to sleep and made them step their game up. We beat Troy two years in a row. But a decade later, where are we compared to them. Not a few years after us LAUGHING at Troy because we beat them while having more fans at the game. They had a boom box at halftime the 100 made them shut off. Rattler Till Death marched around their whole stadium flying that big FAMU flag. Glorious times. Three years later, Troy was beating Missouri on ESPN on Thursday night and we were in the middle of revolving ADs and a botched 1-A move. Our issue is a failure of leadership and vision. Yeah, FAMU is a national brand that can draw anywhere, but we haven't leveraged that into permanent athletic success at the level to which FAMU is accustomed. If the plan would have been put in place, we would be at 20,000 students with more research programs instead of struggling to stay at 13,000.

Thank you. PWCs would get national tv contracts with our level of fan support. If we played TnSU, SU and BCU at Bragg, we would sell out every home game because the only way you would see any of those three is to get a season ticket.

Before we worry about uniform money, I am sure they would rather make $1.2-1.5 million every hear to play a conference rival on television.

Right our administration and alumni mindset has to change in order for our schools can take the jump to another conference or FBS status...

Why even mention buying those uniforms when you can use what you have, be smart, and Nike or Under Armour will pay you to wear their uniforms? That's what I'm talking about. I'm talking about what HBCUs can do to make themselves more attractive to bring in more money.

SU and Gram had a Nike Uni deal on the table but the conference signed that Russell deal.

I'm sure they would. But, when much of your entire program and by extension your conference is stagnant over $1.2-$1.5 mil/year is it worth it? Games like the Bayou Classic don't mean much to the kids being recruited and I wonder how much those games mean to college football fans who happen to be Black in a general sense. Aside from a few classics (2 at most) and rivalry games, HBCUs need to get away from some of those games and play better competition to become more viable in the future. Self-segregation in an athletic sense is short-minded to say the least.

I remember Grambling wore Nike uniforms during Coach Rob's last few years then went to Adidas under Doug's first tenure, and I think under Broadway they went to Russell which I think they're still wearing. What does the SWAC have to do with SU and Grambling's Nike deal? Are you saying they forbade them from signing with Nike? Break it down for me please.

meant to type Russell. The SWAC signed a conference wide uniform, shoe, and Helmet deal. It hurts certain schools who could broker their own deal, but that is part of being in a conference I guess.

"All of these great basketball programs have been supported by Phil Knight and Nike," Hollis said. "His support of the programs have created scholarships and resources for these departments to excel."

Hollis said the event isn't driven by Knight or Nike, but rather by the schools' athletic directors who want to express their thanks.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a Nike or Under Armour or Adidas or Reebok event like this? http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...s-commit-16-team-mega-event-honor-phil-knight

There is a lot of controversy about this too. Those coaches have Nike connections and their own deals too. Coach K is one of them.

Must add that using the Bayou Classic is not a good example to use since SU and Grambling are conference opponents. I like SU playing FAMU every year because of the history between the 2 schools.

Grambling's NIKE deal was national as it was everywhere and all sports benefited....they went to Adidas and that was it...

Re: Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Bette

This topic won't go anywhere. This reminds of the frat meeting I just went to.. trying to solve a 20 year old problem with the same old solutions.

This is where our problem lies: TALENT.

Our other problem is: SELF HATE

We hate the fact that we play mostly HBCUs but why? Because HBCUs are considered inferior even by some of YOU and please dont' go to the MEAC board. They are staunch Republicans over there and don't know it. They hate black people.

A little over 10 years ago, TNState was the #1 team in 1-AA. SU was right behind them at one point at #3. Now what would have happened if TSU had fallen and the #2 had also lost and FAMU didn't kick SU to sleep that year. SU could have moved up to #1 in the nation. But our memories are short because we don't think we could ever get to #1 being black. We can get to #1 by ALL of us kicking azz every year. Why is the SEC #1. Because they kick azz out of conference. Why is the SWAC next to last? Because we don't. If we use out two OOC games wisely and stop playing games we know we are going to LOSE or stop play University of Lynchberg and Concordia, we can raise our stock but I think that FIRST we need to help our schools. I have said this 10 times over: WE GET ON HERE EVERYDAY AND WE DON'T DO ANYTHING TO HELP OUR SCHOOLS!

Yeah, I am sure that some of us give back etc... but getting out helps. For example, we didn't have an alumni chapter in Philly 5 years ago. Thus, we were lucky to get 1 to 2 kids from Philly to Jackson every year. Now we have a chapter, this year we got 23 kids from Philly to Jackson. We need to do the same with athletes. I can't recruit for JSU because that is illegal but we AS FANS need to come together and promote the SWAC. If the SWAC office has material, we need to have it so we can hand out or take to high schools to give to coaches. There are MANY black schools here in Philly and many large areas and even in the south, who don't get recruited by the SWAC. We would improve our stock greatly, if we could just get every school from Valley to Grambling just to have a roster of 1 or 2 star athletes (I had to say that becasue I know some of you self haters are gonna try to say I'm trying to outrecruit Miami and Notre Dame). Talent is what we need but we need to EDUCATE the masses on the good of the SWAC. I bet you that half the kids in Jackson don't know how JSU used to be NFL pipeline. We have all ten schools here on TSPN and I know that if the SWAC does not have something, we can create something. Heck, if I could get a nice-two page pamplet, I would print it myself. We need to mail info out to every 1 and 2 star athlete in the NATION.

Once we get the talent, then GSU can beat McNeese azz, SU can beat NW States azz, JSU can show Jacksonville State who the real JSU is, UAPB can beat Central AR, etc.... Then we can move up in the polls and show 1-AA just how worthless their their playoffs is... becasue a SWAC team whooped that azz and then they won't want to to play us anymore.. .
Our schools are not going to get off their azz and they don't really have the manpower to. The SWAC won't either. It's up to us. If we can get 3 to 4 teams in the top 25 every year, our alums would not hold their heads down as much. If we improve our stock we might even get our #2 East or West team in the playoff and that would make a lot you lose control.

MB and Jr stay off TP page posting!! lol

Good Post TP!!
