Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Better?

I was just thinking after I saw that Appalachian State will wear Nike Combat uniforms for one game this season that maybe it would make financial sense for HBCUs in the long-term to play the better FCS programs on a regular basis to increase their profile and to be able to recruit better players out of high school. I think it would be better for HBCUs to do this rather than rely on playing out of conference games against virtual unknowns with the occasional game against a FBS school as well as recruiting troubled athletes who have flamed out of FBS programs. What do you all think?

Nobody cares about FCS as a whole besides the fans of the schools involved. Even App State is only known as the school that beat Michigan (sigh). There is some benefit to scheduling better and you would be hard pressed to find a single person on here who agrees with the 9-game mandate, but SWAC schools aren't going to start making money over foot by playing the likes of Georgia Southern. As far as troubled athletes go, the occasional transfer of a former FBS player with a checkered past is hardly indicative of the overall recruiting philosophies of SWAC schools.

I'm glad you said that because some folks around here were thinking with Crowell and Dyer in tow, the SWAC was going to embark on a Renaissance.

The SWAC doesn't have but normally two non conference games. In the case of Jsu and Southern with the Atlanta Football Classic and Southern Heritage Classic with fixed games only one choice. I think the larger issue is being significantly underfunded compared to out of conference lower level FBS and FCS prospective foes. This encumbers the ability for success on the field. This is not the 70's or even the 80's and watered down 90's where formidable players just fall in our laps. It's time we examine funding make a decision on what is the most prudent move and stop thinking our name and past accomplishments can carry us.

I assume you're being facetious b/c for a FCS program to beat Michigan on its home turf is a hell of an accomplishment. There's nothing wrong with being known for such. Furthermore, how do so many of you know for certain that a SU/Gram/JSU game versus the likes of a GA Southern wouldn't draw interest? Has a name SWAC program ever played GA Southern in recent years? If not, then I think we should move away from making assumptions.

I agree with you. It was the issue of funding and sponsorship that made me pay attention to Appalachian State wearing Nike Combat uniforms. Only select FCS schools received the Nike Combat uniforms. I was thinking if SWAC and MEAC schools stepped up their out of conference schedule by scheduling quality FCS opponents then maybe more sponsors would come aboard, which could drive up fan interest, merchandise sales and profits, and ticket sales, etc.

Making assumptions? If you ask the average person who played in the FCS Championship game they could not tell you, but if you ask who played for the BCS title game they would tell you.

What's your point? What you said isn't news to anyone. Should HBCUs schedule better FCS schools for out of conference games on a regular basis?

Appalachian State is only an FCS school in athletics. If they wanted to move up they could with ease. When you get some time take a serious look at their school and the budget and you will we what I'm talking about.

To me, HBCUs have dug their own hole with trying to hold on to the traditional way of promoting and building a school. We get too complacent with taking our ball and going to play with ourselves.

GSU's National Alumni Association President said this in a speech once, "If Grambling gets $2 million from a source the we should also be trying to get Southern or Jackson State one off GP". These ninjas booed him. I was like he has a point, it's called looking out for each other.

As I have consistently stated Duer Sharpe is the bigges hindrance to the SWAC along with Presidents who are pressured by alumni who are stuck in the past.

HBCUs could also promote such games against better FCS out of conference schools. Why are you all so negative regarding one proposition that as far as I know hasn't been attempted?

I agree. I have looked at the school size and endowment figures of some of the better FCS schools. You're right.

So, what do HBCUs do? Keep doing the same thing or change? I have no idea but if something hasn't been tried and the same old thing is producing minimal results at best, what could a change hurt?

You missed the point. Yes, beating Michigan (sigh again) was a great accomplishment. That is what Appalachian State is known for. The average person has no idea they won three straight FCS titles. That's my point. There is nothing to assume, the evidence is obvious. The FCS title game doesn't even outdraw the SWAC title game in attendance. That's how much 'attention' they get. The vast majority of FCS school fans are bigger fans of the power schools in their own state than they are of their alma maters. No one disagrees that better schedule would be good and nobody is against it, but you greatly overestimate the financial impact and 'attention' it would draw.

Should HBCUs schedule better FCS schools for out of conference games on a regular basis?

Well, some of us Grambling folks would like to get just ONE FCS OOC school on the schedule. We haven't played one the last two years and won't see one for at least the next two years. We are going through an identity crisis...I guess.

Re: Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Bette

This topic won't go anywhere. This reminds of the frat meeting I just went to.. trying to solve a 20 year old problem with the same old solutions.

This is where our problem lies: TALENT.

Our other problem is: SELF HATE

We hate the fact that we play mostly HBCUs but why? Because HBCUs are considered inferior even by some of YOU and please dont' go to the MEAC board. They are staunch Republicans over there and don't know it. They hate black people.

A little over 10 years ago, TNState was the #1 team in 1-AA. SU was right behind them at one point at #3. Now what would have happened if TSU had fallen and the #2 had also lost and FAMU didn't kick SU to sleep that year. SU could have moved up to #1 in the nation. But our memories are short because we don't think we could ever get to #1 being black. We can get to #1 by ALL of us kicking azz every year. Why is the SEC #1. Because they kick azz out of conference. Why is the SWAC next to last? Because we don't. If we use out two OOC games wisely and stop playing games we know we are going to LOSE or stop play University of Lynchberg and Concordia, we can raise our stock but I think that FIRST we need to help our schools. I have said this 10 times over: WE GET ON HERE EVERYDAY AND WE DON'T DO ANYTHING TO HELP OUR SCHOOLS!

Yeah, I am sure that some of us give back etc... but getting out helps. For example, we didn't have an alumni chapter in Philly 5 years ago. Thus, we were lucky to get 1 to 2 kids from Philly to Jackson every year. Now we have a chapter, this year we got 23 kids from Philly to Jackson. We need to do the same with athletes. I can't recruit for JSU because that is illegal but we AS FANS need to come together and promote the SWAC. If the SWAC office has material, we need to have it so we can hand out or take to high schools to give to coaches. There are MANY black schools here in Philly and many large areas and even in the south, who don't get recruited by the SWAC. We would improve our stock greatly, if we could just get every school from Valley to Grambling just to have a roster of 1 or 2 star athletes (I had to say that becasue I know some of you self haters are gonna try to say I'm trying to outrecruit Miami and Notre Dame). Talent is what we need but we need to EDUCATE the masses on the good of the SWAC. I bet you that half the kids in Jackson don't know how JSU used to be NFL pipeline. We have all ten schools here on TSPN and I know that if the SWAC does not have something, we can create something. Heck, if I could get a nice-two page pamplet, I would print it myself. We need to mail info out to every 1 and 2 star athlete in the NATION.

Once we get the talent, then GSU can beat McNeese azz, SU can beat NW States azz, JSU can show Jacksonville State who the real JSU is, UAPB can beat Central AR, etc.... Then we can move up in the polls and show 1-AA just how worthless their their playoffs is... becasue a SWAC team whooped that azz and then they won't want to to play us anymore.. .
Our schools are not going to get off their azz and they don't really have the manpower to. The SWAC won't either. It's up to us. If we can get 3 to 4 teams in the top 25 every year, our alums would not hold their heads down as much. If we improve our stock we might even get our #2 East or West team in the playoff and that would make a lot you lose control.

Re: Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Bette

Grambling has the Port City Classic... In year one, we scheduled La Tech and had 35k attendance.

It was such as success that we decided to not play another in-state FCS or FBS school, but signed Alcorn for a 2 year deal. So far we've not heard anything about who we will play in year 4 or if there will even be a year 4. Personally, I'm disappointed because that venue and date (Shreveport/ Labor Day Weekend) should make it easy to get ANY in-state school FBS (not named LSU) or FCS in-state or regional to come and give us a neutral site game. Shreveport has Casinos for the fans and high school recruiting for the schools. Once we get over the "they didn't play us back in the day" mentality (and not just on the part of Coach Williams but also some of our fans), we will be better off for it. I'm just saying!

Year one of the Port City Classic was such a success that La Tech (the school we played against in year one) scheduled Texas A&M to play them in Shreveport the Thursday before we play Alcorn.

Seven conf games or at least eight would solve our problems. Nine game mandate needs to go.

Re: Play Better FCS Teams Regularly or Recruit Troubled FBS Athletes - Which is Bette

About App State... There's no way in hell a home and home with them wouldn't sell out both stadiums.

It would depend on who they played. They have good home attendance so that wouldn't make a difference, but our fans don't necessarily operate that way. Again, this isn't an argument against playing those schools. We should, but it wouldn't hardly be the financial boon that Kamala keeps arguing it would. Just look at Tennessee State's home attendance when they don't play another HBCU.

I said it could be of financial benefit in the long-term. I honestly don't know how many SWAC fans know how good/the importance of some of the better FCS programs. But, if such games are promoted correctly, they can be successful.
