Summer Camp at JSU: QB battle

On the real... JSU has typically been getting good enuff qb play...especially with Therriault. But what has surprised me is that yall really don't have that killer defense anymore. I know yall still have some good players, but it's been a minute since JSU's defense was stifling! You know like when you had to have a busted play to score sometimes or a db had to get injured or something. I know none of us get players like we used too...but I really thought Comegy would have the defense better. That's his side of the ball isn't it?

I think he got too pass happy...you do that and watch your defense get less intense. Maybe it just seems that way to me, not just with JSU but in general. Teams become pass happy and their Defense goes down.

uuum Mike, ya'll scored on two busted plays against us last year.

The JSU defense was good last year (without looking I would say #1 in the SWAC) and will be better this year...

As for the topic of this thread:

The QBs are really competing so far. It's hard to tell who will break away from the pack. We really want to RS Ivy but it looks like dude has come to play!

Going strictly by number of passes completed, freshman quarterback LaMontiez Ivy led the way, completing 10-of-12 attemtps, highlighted by a couple deep balls that went for “touchdowns” on successive snaps.

Clayton Moore was 9-of-12, including a nice hook-up with Rico Richardson, who out-leapt the defensive back on a jump ball.

Tevin Chapman went 7-for-9 and Dedric McDonald 7-of-12, primarily connecting on the short, underneath crossing routes. Those completion numbers include both 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 drills.

Rico is ready!

It’s pretty clear that the offseason has been good to Richardson, who looked really strong today. It was almost comical the ease he displayed during a rapid-fire drill with quarterbacks on Thursday night. While other receivers sometimes struggled with speed and location of the balls being fired at them, Richardson stepped into the drill, caught all four passes and quietly walked away.

Frat, you good people...BUT, yall came in overrated that year. I say that because as I recall, yall ended up winning "maybe" one more game the rest of the way.

MB, we lost 4 of our last 5.. starting with a loss to ya'll. We then went on to lose to AAMU, UAPB and Alcorn. Our only win in that stretch was vs PV for Homecoming. I don't think we were over-rated but I do think that D1 ball was over Comegy's head at the time. Beating BAMA State all those years had him fooled. We played a D2 defense.. stacking the line and playing man coverage. That was same defense that always got AAMU drilled by us under Hughes. That is what Spears wanted .. man coverage and we gave him that. Then on offense, Woody was too conservative when we got the lead. He never went for the jugular like a coach like Spears would. He just tried to sit on the ball. Even Alcorn beat us that year and Alcorn didn't have have the talent that we did but Woody got a lead and tried to sit on the ball rather than keep trying to score.

That 2006 team was probably our most talented but the least gelled. Our coaching philosophy has changed since then.

Damn, he's actually done better than I thought... I guess I was including those losses to Tn State all the time too. Yall ain't done to bad... not good enuff, but really not tooo bad.

MB, it's bad by JSU standards. Those numbers get you on the hotseat. I don't see Comegy at JSU much longer if he does not get to Bham this year and next year and win at least one of them. In a 10 year span, JSU fans expect to be in Bham 6 or 7 times. We are not close to that so Comegy is gonna have to really get on the ball and find that missing element that always keeps us a game out.

I don't see why JSU is talking those quarterbacks through that to save face, they know they are going to give it to the white boy. Just be real. I would be very shocked if they didn't.

My hope is that we can RS Ivy. He will still get 3 years to start. The other FR will def be RS'ed. It would make no sense to play Ivy if one of the upper classmen are ready to go. However, if Ivy is the best, I think that is who we will go with. We go full contact next week. I am sure we will get a better idea by then. We really need a scrimmage every Saturday to sort this out.

Y'all talking about Wilson, o-coordinator? His offense put up some big numbers?

It was JSU talent moreso than him. We just had to cuss him out in the private forum after we drop 50 on somebody. He has us pretty fooled at first but by the end of his first year, we were like, "wait, something ain't right about this dude"..but team did drop 50 point in that game.. It's like when we tell people that even in 2006, when we were 5-1, we knew the bottom was gonna fall out. I'm glad he brought the offense to Jacktown but i am just as glad that he has moved on to Hampton. He won't hardly have success there with that little bit of talent they have.

Go back and read the question again. Eugene was the last SWAC quarterback that came in AS A FRESHMAN and developed, progressed, got better. The cat destroyed SWAC record books.

DGTM,
Bruce Eugene was not that good man. I watched dude. He put in a lot of time studying and knew Gram's offense like the back of his hand. He is the smartest QB I have seen in the SWAC, I will say that much. His ability to destroy SWAC record books I think had a lot to do with talent levels than anything. Same as with Casey and Kent. The SWAC really doesn't develop QB's. Some of the reports on Kent was that he had a remedial understanding of the game. People who watched Bruce Eugene in NFL Europe said he had a tendency to just throw the ball up and bad mechanics. Cats said that Casey was similar to Bruce. He was smart but had a tendency to throw it up.

They gave Tebow a chance and he was just as bad.

back to topic............... The QBs.

McDonald gets strong start................... Video
While a lot of attention has gone to the newcomers, Jackson State senior quarterback Dedric McDonald has quietly put together a strong start to camp.

McDonald, who exited spring drills as the No.1 option to replace the graduated Casey Therriault and continues to run with the first team unit, looked good again on Sunday, the team's first day in shells.

"He's calm," coach Rick Comegy said. "He's competed before. I think he's not going to let his head go elsewhere because he thinks somebody else has his job. He's going to stick in there and try to get that job this year."

Jackson State QB race taking center stage

It's still far too early to name a favorite in Jackson State's quarterback race, but there's no denying the early charge put on by one of the dark horses.

Freshman LaMontiez Ivy continued to dazzle during Saturday's three-hour practice, drawing several oohs and ahhs during the day's various passing drills
.

Ivy completed 6 of 7 passes during one-on-one drills between wide receivers and cornerbacks. When he hit a second consecutive fade route down the sideline for a "touchdown," even the most veteran Tiger players let out a roar of approval.
Ivy completed all five of his attempts in seven-on-seven drills.

"We're going to have to go back and talk about Ivy because he looks big league to me," coach Rick Comegy said. "I heard he was good, I just didn't know he was that good."

Morning Briefing: McDonald calm, collected this preseason (VIDEO)
There’s been a lot said and written about Jackson State’s quarterback race and understandably so.

There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding the arrival of one-time Ole Miss backup Evan Ingram and the arrival of one-time Louisville star and Akron starter Clayton Moore

Stronger Tigers get set to work

Asked if there had been any surprises from the morning's physical conditioning test, Jackson State football coach Rick Comegy cut right to it.
"Derrick Jean put up 225 (pounds) 34 times," Comegy said, referring to the junior offensive lineman's bench press test.

For months, Comegy has talked about getting the Tigers stronger as JSU prepares to chase down what it hopes will be its first Southwestern Athletic Conference title sine 2007.

After two days of preseason practices, Comegy believes the Tigers' coaching staff is beginning to finally see the fruits of those offseason labors.

Tiny B. J. Lee has big role for Jackson State
Go to a Jackson State football practice in search of B.J. Lee and you're bound to be looking for a while.

But he's there.

Amid the hulking offensive and defensive linemen and the towering wide receivers, there is Lee, all 5-foot-7 inches of him.

Lee, a Ridgeland High product, is one of the shortest players on the JSU roster - Dominick Fears is also 5-7. But that hasn't stopped Lee, who enters his senior season a key piece in what Tigers' coach Rick Comegy believes to be a strong stable of running backs.

They also got banned from post season.

from everything i'm reading the Ivy kid is possibly the real deal, so i'd just redshirt him, let him fully learn the offense and get a year of weights under his belt and ride with McDonald and Moore. Next year would be smooth sailing for him with no people in front of him and he would have 4 years to start and possibly re-write JSU's record books.

Moore has two years keft....

Bruce lost Doug and his pro development suffered, but his development into a winning SWAC QB continued. He called a lot of his own plays (mostly fly or post patterns LOL), but he just wasn't NFL material. It ain't the "SWAC", it's just that some great college QBs ain't cut out for the pro game. Look at most of these record-setters at that position.

Yeah, having Bruce Eugene was like having an Offensive Coordinator on the field. His understanding of the game was astounding.
