Interesting article. I know there are various schools of thought on this, but I thought the questions posed by the author would spark an interesting conversation on the SWAC Page since a number of our schools, TSU included, have been nicknamed "Second Chance U".

Crowell, like many other athletes who’ve transferred to HBCUs after a hard times at PWI’s, would come in and likely be a player with immediate impact and draft stock at ASU. But its clear he believes his baggage won’t make him appealing to another BCS program, and its obvious that Alabama State was somewhere on his radar for this information to come out.

So which side of the HBCU argument are we making for cases like Crowell’s and other athletes with a troubled past? That we open doors to everyone? Or that we are a great back-up plan for knuckleheads?

The latter....but it is not just the knuckleheads. Those who simply don't pan out at BCS schools or don't get the playing time also use HBCUs as Plan B....and sometimes Plan C

I agree with this as well as those who chased that fool's gold and ended up with bronze.

This kid is a weed head and he carries deadly weapons. Its sad that HBCUs are so quick to accept troubled kids like these so easily. The kind of environment this kid is going into will enhance his derelict lifestyle.

Bottom line. Crowell is a bad apple that has been in trouble since HIGH SCHOOL. It's not like his troubles JUST started. Think about it!

On the flip side I hope he turns it around.

You are so right TGO. I guess Comegy and Casey are prime examples. Oh, wait, didn't Casey get involved in a murder case?

If he would have choose us from the Gate with his Troubles no one would even care... he has 3 years, he will need all 3 to get in the league... Good thing is he dont count against the APR.. 2nd if we dont save our kids, who will? we already know these PWCs dont truely give a sh*t about our players

Now according to Pop33, that can be said about all schools. Just saying.

The thing I find interesting in this thread is how so many are convinced Georgia did this kid wrong. Is this guy responsible for any of his behavior or are white people always to blame?

Wasn't this guy arrested 3 or 4 times before this incident? Had trouble with attending class and drug use? At what point is he to be held accountable for his actions? Why do we consider his dismissal from a PWC so wrong and that a HBCU would have "protected" him? Really? So, all of this stuff would have been ignored at a HBCU? Could that be one of the reasons these kids don't respect HBCUs and use them as a last resort?

Maybe HBCUs should draw the line on some folks too. Not be so willing to "protect" or coddle people who insist on being a knucklehead. Maybe then they'll get a little more respect among these kids.

Because that "protect" these guys no matter what they do attitude is like the neighborhood ho letting everybody hit and then wondering why nobody respects her. Why everybody treats her like crap. Gotta stop accepting and taking any and everything.

Ga Southern gets transfers, Appalachian St gets transfers, Jacksonville St gets transfers, Maine. North Dakota. Why yall ain't downing them or mad at them?

The point is do Appalachian State, Jacksonville State, Maine and North Dakota blame the previous school? Or do they just accept that this is a kid with problems and we're taking a chance on him?

Why are his troubles Georgia's fault and not his own? That's the point.

Just wondering if some people believe in personal accountability or is everything in their world somebody else's fault.

and I stand behind that statement. College athletics is a business. You think Alabama State is rushing out to get this cat so he can get a second chance at a college education?

HBCUs probably get LESS of the AA malcontents than other FCS or JUCOs get. We just pay more attention to those who come to our schools.

If Cam Newton had transferred to an HBCU instead of Blinn he would have been written about the same way as this guy.

To me it's not a bad back up given the circumstances. I know this sounds crazy but how many of you know a dude who came from the straight poor hood.....got an education at a black school and made some good out of himself.

Now yes the article makes it sound so damn bad but hell the white schools don't give a shit about them..
