This is Funny . . . Unusual High School Sports Mascots

I think any predominated Black high school with a mascot that represents the Confederate South is funny and unusual. What's next, predominated White high school with mascots of Nat Turner, Malcolm X, or Marcus Garvey.

I know Dominican, an all-girls Catholic school in New Orleans, DOES NOT have a mascot and is probably the only LHSAA school without one.

We have that in Huntsville... 2 predominately black high schools. One Is Lee High Generals and the other is Butler High Rebels. Butler was about to get sued by Ole Miss for using their logo so they changed their logo to a Black rebel lol

Before they were closed(and will soon be re-opened), we had a majority black school here in BR called the Robert E. Lee High School Rebels with the ol' General Lee as their mascot. Finally the school board decided to change their mascot name to the Patriots, then the school closed down. To me, changing the name to the Patriots was just as bad because now you are making it sound like Robert E. Lee was a hero to America. lol

That school is a disgrace and a biohazard. They need to build a new one on site. The district needs to be sued if they put another soul in those buildings.

Well, get ready for a bunch of lawsuits, because they are re-opening it in August.

most black schools with confederate mascots were lilly white schools at first

all the schools that were built for blacks in Texas adopted a "cat" or "horse" mascot

DCG says she loves her high school mascot and even love when they play the fight song (Dixie).

The buildings formerly know as Robert E. Lee High School is presently occupied by Baton Rouge Magent High. They have been there for the past 2 years while the old Baton Rouge Magnet High on goverment street is being rebuilt. They are moving to the new building this year so the Old Robert E. Lee building is available again.

Why are they re-opening tha school?

Because due to Capitol and Istrouma being under state control, and Glen Oaks being added to that list in the next 2 years, they will have a major overcrowding issue at Mckinley and Woodlawn High School. By them re-opening Lee High, they are going to relieve some pressure off of those 2 schools.

I just wonder if they are going to rename the school. They seemed split on that idea.

With nearly 1,000 votes, the Highland Home Flying Squadroncame in first place, receiving 29 percent of the total votes.

The Sidney Lanier Poets, who were in first place early on, finished second with 754 votes or about 23 percent. The Frisco City Whippets, whose school closed in 2008, rounded out the top three with 592 votes, or about 18 percent.

The Whippets were followed, in order, by the Alabama School for the Deaf Silent Warriors, the Holt Ironmen, the Arab Knights, the Paul W. Bryant Stampede, the Spanish Fort Toros, the Hayes Pacesetters and the Evangel Christian Lightning.

According to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society, all 11 players on Crenshaw County's football team in 1941 were drafted into the U.S. military's airborne division. When the players returned the school changed its name to Highland Home and adopted the "Flying Squadron" mascot.

An F-16 jet which was used in Desert Storm in 1992 was donated and placed in the parking lot of the school in 2008. The project was funded by volunteers, reports The Greenville Advocate.
