A Real Conversation About Your Child and Athletics

If you had a son who was a blue chip QB said:
Frat in all honesty with me it would be about putting my child in the right place for the best future opportunity. I would say that is RGIII had attended an HBCU and broke all the NCAA records he would have been drafted in the 1st Round but probably later in the round losing millions of dollars. Why, because the first comment would be he was much better and played against inferior competition. Everyone in my family with the exception of my brother attended a HBCU and I'm a strong supporter. However if faced with the excample you gave, I'm going to give him advice on what is his best opportunity for future development as opposed for for the sake of tradition.

Now when talking about academics thats a different story. If I attended a HBCU and made 32 on the ACT and my counterparts made 32 on the ACT companies realize both of us are smart so I would encourage going to a HBCU but athletics the situation is entirely different.

Run boy run. Jump boy jump!!

LOL @ Cee. You be cracking me up.

Anyway, if they are smart you get that paper after doing all that running and jumping no matter what school you attend. There are only 4 schools that really care about their student athletes and will make sure they graduate in other than basket weaving 101 because they have other thing in mind for them afterwards and don't have those crap majors. They are:

The US Naval Academy, The US Air Force Academy, and the U S Military academy. I will include the Coast Guard Academy but I don't think they suit up many sport teams. But if they do, they fit into this category.

The Ivy League schools would be the next ones who might care but hell they don't give out athletic schollies. LOL. But neither do the service academies.

Which is why I would be more inclined to push my own to Annapolis over any school if they are a blue chip athlete with stellar grades. Unless their goal is to make it the NBA or NFL but now a days with all the outs you can get in the military they are starting to make concessions for the ones who are truly draft worthy. I know the Air Force does this now. Allow them to serve in a reservist role if the get drafted by the NFL or NBA. At least they will have a good job if the athletic thing don't work out and a degree from a school that everyone in this nation respects whether you are white or black.

I have read every post in this thread and some get it and some just want to make excuses and cover up the same bullshat that happens to athletes at HBCU's that they will roast a PWC for doing.

Take the 1920's blinders off.
HBCU's use athletes just as bad as PWC's. If I were a 4 star kid, why would I only look at or consider HBCU's when every school in the country is looking at me. Why would I turn down a schollie at Ohio State where their Intramural sports, NOT THE VARSITY SPORTS, facilities, training table, etc., are 1,000,000 times better than every HBCU facility in the nation combined.

Not to mention, 95% of HBCU degreed programs are limited. Most of these real student athletes don't even consider HBCUs because HBCU's can't even offer the major the kid wants to major in. We basically have the basics. Engineering, Medical, and LAW are our "EXOCIT" 3. :smh:

Yeah it is tough road to compete. Not that we shouldn't try to. But when you see isht like this below, it is hard to talk to these kids about why they should choose a HBCU or even a FCS school when they are a 4 or 5 star prospect.

Ohio State to begin giving athletes iPads

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio State's department of athletics will begin providing its student-athletes with iPads this fall.

Dr. David Graham, Ohio State's assistant provost for student-athlete success, announced the decision on Wednesday.

Man all i can do is  Ohio State giving athletes ipads while JSU gave the football players hot dogs and burgers for a home pregame meal during their 8 game winning streak...Hell the Boom eats buffet style before and after away games! and I kno for a fact other HBCU programs are sad when it comes to stuff like this for athletes...Choose an HBCU as a 4 or 5 star player over a BCS or FBS...No sir..

And Cee Dog can come in here with this Run Ray all he wants but he does the same thing every sports game he watches....Since u wanna blame someone blame Curt Flood and Jackie Robinson and the many other great black athletes who said we can play with the white folks and beat them.... if it wasnt for them every GREAT black athlete would still be running for touchdowns for all of our HBCUs...sad but true!

Some of ya'll really don't see it, we have APR problems PARTLY because we have to take at risk, borderline kids FROM THE JUMP. Not making excuses, but when you have a kid that BARELY got in to college and you have shabby, deficient means for their academic advisement, what do you expect? We do have to start thinking outside of the box and maybe concentrating on smarter kids that may be less athletic, but make fewer mental mistakes when they get on the field.
