A Real Conversation About Your Child and Athletics

let the church say AMEN!!!

Matter of fact, my son who plays FB wants to be a Veterinarian. I mentioned to him about Colorado State, Cornell, Ohio State and Mich State(where my sister in law went). He asked me about places closer to home and HBCU and asked me about LSU's Vet school and if any HBCU had one.

I told him about Tuskegee and I think FAMU has one. Doesn't PV have one or in the process of building one?

Yes PV has a vet program in fact the same guy I'm talking about has a very cute sister in law who graduated from PV's vet school, she went to Africa for a while, but she's in the states doing her thing in fact we nicknamed her Farmer LOL

Since Lacrosse is big in this area, I'm going to get my son interested in Lacrosse. I would love for him to play baseball also. My son knows about Grambling and watches the Bayou Classic with me. I'm going to take him and my daughter to Grambling and let them experience how it is to go to an HBCU, but the ultimate decision is theirs. The good thing about living in the DMV is that there are some really good HBCU's and PWC's within a 4 hour radius. If any of the schools in this area offers a full ride to my son and daughter and they're interested in attending either of those schools, I wouldn't have a problem with it. If my son decides he wants to play football, I'm going to push Grambling big time!

Alcorn also! Isn't CT a Veternarian at Alcorn?

My nephew plays Lacrosse and baseball along with Football. I will see if mine would be interested. Might look into Soccer. He asked me about it because he saw some of my Soccer tophies.

I don't care if he plays sports or not honestly. He will be a genius though. I need to cement my legacy by raising a genius

I've had cousins play from Notre Dame to PV

One went to the NFL and had a great career who went to ND while his brother went to PV and has a nice career also

Had others who got caught up as a blue chipper, went big-time but got burned and had nothing to fall back on....

Bottom line is you got to know your kid at the end of the day...if he's a Top 100 kid but barely passing in high school, hit the minimum NCAA standards and forced to major at A&M, LSU, etc. in the lone athlete major they can be in, then you better sit down with them beforehand and explain to them what can that degree do if you don't go pro....

if they turn out to be a blue chip and excel in college and the league is calling...take it and run....

But if they're a marginal athlete at a major school but has the booksense...take advantage of what they have to offer

bottom line, you got to know your kid and make sure they prosper in the right situation...use the BCS schools if you can like they use you...

if you go SWAC, put your school on the map and work hard as its easier to become a "name" if you dominate this level of competition

Well said. You have to know your kid. If your kid is like a RG3 type of young man who can navigate through playing big time college ball and be a REAL student athlete. Then do it. If your kid is a Grant Hill, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, hell even Vince Carter and most of those past UNC players that have graduated in more than basket weaving 101. You just got to know your kid. Teach them how to take advantage of the situation and get that education. No matter where they matriculate. HBCU or PWC.

PWC education can not make any more than HBCU education. If he or she is intelligent as you think they are, HBCU's will get them there. What about all the other HBCU grads who became doctors, lawyers and engineers? Be honest, the apple don't fall to far from the tree.................

Good job Fiyah. You are truly an example of not pushing your school on your child, but rather showing him the experience and instilling it in him threw a learning environment. Many HBCU grads will never admit it, but they feel as though their school held them back and if they attend a big name PWC they would be further ahead in their career. Honesty with yourself is the key.

Here is the first problem (see the emboldened in your post)....Why do we not see HBCUs as TOP UNIVERSITIES? Other than Howard and Spellman and a couple of others we do not see HBCUs as top schools and that is on US.

All institutions have their issues but for some reason the issues of HBCUs are magnified while the issues of PWCs are minimized and we fall for that crap.

If we are going to pigeon hole it to athletics for this discussion ask yourself this question....how many of those athletes attending PWCs get to the next level? Out of each graduating class how many go to the NFL or NBA?

I know on the smack board we talk a lot stuff about crap to get a laugh, to joke, etc... So let's be serious for a moment.

If you had a son who was a blue chip QB, 6'5'', 225 pounds, runs a 4.4, 3.5 GPA, 25 on the ACT, very disciplined, and you are not trying to pimp your child out for money from a school. Would you still send him to your HBCU for sake of tradition and your love for that school; or would you encourage him to attend a top university?

This is the best advice. A kid that is top tier weather it’s in sports, academics, or both will be alright. I think the majority of the athlete tragedy story begins is when a young person thinks they are better at sports than they really are.

If my child gets a scholarship and we have talked about his future with and/or without atheltics, he can go anywhere he/she wants. I will tell him/her if his school happens to come up against my alma mater though .... His/her mom is cheering for him/her that day.

However, if I'm paying and everything else is the same as above, he has about 117 choices because like I did and so many others have before him, he/she can succeed greatly coming from an HBCU.

One thing though ... my children will know everything they need to know about Southern from experiencing it with their parents and grandparents. That is a MUST!

  (but it should have been sTu)

Well a few years ago my son told me that PV was on his list of schools to go to for playing sports. Since that time he went to several camps and visits to different schools. He went to football combines by Nike, Under Armour and National Underclassman. He won awards in those combines and was invited to other selected camps by them also. He made it to the Top Prospects Combine, which is one of the top exclusive camps to go to. In the end, it really came down to 2 schools. He missed out on one because the coaches that was recruiting him left the school to go somewhere else and it then became a numbers game. DCG's son and my son went to a lot of the same camps over the few years too. My son had a NCSA Profile and only 1 other Swac school took a look at him besides PV.

I am proud to say that my son will be taking his talents to a HBCU next fall and the HBCU will be Prairie View A&M University.

Well mine (elementary age) are brainwashed into loving SU right now. 4th grader is extremely intelligent and athletic (basketball) and has also mentioned Stanford. He's also in an academic program sponsored by Duke University and has asked a couple questions about them, but hasn't shown any interest. I consistently speak of and expose him to HBCUs, and the NCAA Tournament had him rooting for Norfolk State.

If he becomes a blue chip athlete I will make sure he meets with SU when he begins talking to coaches. Won't force him to go there, but will definitely make sure he has conversations with the coach.

By what metrics do you rank universities? I think some HBCU's are great schools and some are not. Some will let anybody in. Some PWC's will let anyone in.

The metric should be about who they let out and what they know.

Often, you can directly correlate that to whom they let in... When SU closed it admissions, the on-time graduation rate rose I believe. So will Texas Southern's now that it has closed admissions.

PV doesn't have a Vet school. The College of Agriculture used to have an Animal Science program but if you want to be a Vet you'll have to go to a school that offers Veterinary Medicine.

"Brains will last longer than knees!"

Yesssssssirrrrrr!!!!!

Aside: Those 2 in pvdt's siggy, those are my last ones that I'm going out for to put their name/abiilities showcased in the metroplex. :read: After those two, I'm retiring from all this because I'm too old and I'm too tired (working out, trying to run w/ these youngstas, encouragement, et al :smh: ).

pvdt, I smell University of Nebraska and Oklahoma State. :read: :read: :read: :read: :read: :read: :read:

Go for it! I see a lot of Lacrosse and Soccer teams practicing in the area at different parks. I've seen a few AA kids on the Lacrosse teams. Soccer teams here seem to have a mix of African and Latino kids mixed in with a few Indian kids. My son also likes soccer.

Money Talks and BS Walk. I aint into the political BS, thats where this thread is going but more than likely, the school thats offering the most more than likely is where he going.

I just talked to my frat brother about this yesterday. It would be up to the kid. I personally know of a situation similar to this, but with a couple different variables and the kid picked a SWAC school and went on to a great career.

Typical slave mentality. This is why 90% of all professional athletes end up broke and back in the hood.

I don't know who has lied to you, but Ivy league schools aren't what you make them out to be.
