OH GAWD................... NO!!!
(not smacking..........Got personal interest in this rumor. Going over to the GOAT room for info)

So when will the HC search begin? Spring training is about to begin.

Stump has not accepted any job yet. Offers have been coming to dude from the NFL. Nothing new there. He is well liked in those circles and of course those jobs pay more. He has one season left on his SU contract. So any offer he gets will cause him to think about it. Wouldn't you?

As for a coaching search. You can't really do one at this stage of the game. You will have to pull what Ohio State did last year after the Tressel resignation and make an assistant the interim coach for one year. I am sure ole Pete would volunteer for 200K. LOL. He is still in BR. The Haywood cat that Pittsburgh fired is living in Houston waiting on a coaching job now that he got his charges dropped for his confrontation with his girlfriend. Dude is working for an Oil company. Surely he can be had.

He has done well as a RB coach frat. Not like he has sucked at that. LMAO. They ran well in Seattle and Washington with him as the RB coach. A RB coach is not going to break your beloved Rams. If anything you need to worry about Brian Schottenheimer being your OC. You see the bang up job he did with Sanchez and the Jets offense.

HE IS NOT A NFL QB.
He hear a baby crying in the stands and he get rattled. Been saying that since he left USC.

Him and that big mouth head coach the JETS got are the problems.

Him leaving would be a good thing for SU and the swac. He's not a good HC and the swac needs a strong SU.

99 what are you basing that on...to simply say he is not a good HC is not enough...I want to hear your reasoning and justification to that statement after only 2 years on the job...I see the improvement SU football is making and believe that if he stays this year just may be a break out year for Coach Shorty!

I'm basing my statement mainly off of what I've seen from from SU the last 2 years. His record the first 2 years is the same as Bell. I saw SU's last game against Grambling and they sure didn't look like a team ready to break out. In fact they looked about as bad as they ever looked with Mitchell. Also we have a tendancy on this board to equate close losses with improvement. I see people doing that with Valley as well. That's incorrect. Consistantly losing close games is a sign of bad coaching. A good coach and a good team will find a way to win those tight games. Mitchell hasn't. This isn't smack because I actually like SU as a strong rival. But from my vantage point, they should cut their losses with Mitchell. He's not a good head coach and his record has proven that. It doesn't take 3 years to learn to win in this conference. A good coach would've won more than 6 games the last 2 years. This is not a tough conference.

With less practice time, 9 less scholarships than most of the rest of the SWAC, and a team full of STARTING freshmen and sophomores.... we'll be alright.

Weve been under the same scholarship and practice restrictions for about 3-4 seasons now. And a smart coach wouldn't put an inexperienced squad out there unless he knew they were talented enough to win. Otherwise That's why you have jucos and transfers.

We had no choice. Pete recruiting classes left us with nothing. A lot never showed up and then Stump got in late and his initial class which was recruited late in the game had a bunch of those kids never to show up at SU at all. So basically he is working with the kids who had the grades to stick around from Pete's team and last year's Freshmen who he had the time to recruit. Those guys showed up and played. Comegy has taken the JC route to plug some key holes over the years. That is just his way of doing business. Pete didn't do that and Stump couldn't do that in fear of what might happen even more with the APR situation. Your coach rolled the dice and it paid off for him with a kid like Casey. It has been well documented how bad the program got left by Pete. Even Comegy would have needed 3 years to win at SU. One thing you can say about Bell. He had kids that were not going to cause you any APR issues. So Comegy didn't walk into that as a mess. He gutted JSU team on his own because he didn't like Bell's talent level. Stump inherited a gutted SU team with a few holdovers. Even before Pete was let go, he was not allowed to bring any more transfers in. He mentioned it himself that he wouldn't do it anymore once the NCAA started hovering around his last 3 years. This didn't just start once Stump got there. It was already happening at SU. We just gave too many prop kids opportunities until it burned us.

As for losing the close games. Some were on the coaching staff and others were on the players. Dropping sure balls or fumbling in critical situations that could have iced or won games. Not to mention missing XPs or key FGs. I agree the SWAC aint that tough of a conference to win. But depending on how you want to build your team it will either be a quick fix or 2-3 year process. I am sure there are coaches who can walk into SU and outscheme these SWAC coaches. But the key is finding one that can do that right away. Pete's first staff came in and did that.

Mitchell says he’s ‘not looking’ for another job
Posted on February 15, 2012 by Perryn Keys
Southern football coach Stump Mitchell said Wednesday he is “not looking” for another job and that he is “happy” to be where he is.

Addressing questions as to whether he was considering a job offer in the NFL, Mitchell replied: “All I know is, I’m here at Southern, and that’s where I plan on being.”

Asked if he knew of anything that could alter that, Mitchell replied: “All I can say is that this is the coaching business. I don’t know if anything’s going to alter that. I’m not looking for no jobs. I know I’ve got a job, and I’m happy that I have the job here at Southern University. I mean, I have players in here. I think we can win, and again: I’m here at Southern University.”
