Students Promised Scholarships Ask, 'Where's My Money?'

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Being a member of Prairie View's Marching Storm band is a pretty big deal.

Like star athletes, many members were recruited by the college while still in high school.

"I turned down several other scholarships from several other schools," freshman band member Dane Linyard said.

Prairie View's promise of thousands in scholarship money is the reason some band members said they chose the university.

"I feel lied to," Linyard said. "Because they promised me money I didn't get."

Linyard has black-and-white proof Prairie View awarded him a $5,000 scholarship.

But what doesn’t have in writing is a promise.

When he was a high school senior, Linyard said a university official promised him a four-year ride if he played trombone for the marching band.

"Somebody, somebody out there would see his talent and they did.

"Prairie View was the only one that told him, flat out, he would never have to worry about the money," said Ann Patterson, Linyard’s mother.

But getting the scholarship money, even the $5,000 Linyard can prove he was awarded, has been difficult.

In fact, he didn't see a dime of the money until recently.

"They gave me $3,000 which was just enough to cover my housing so I wouldn't get kicked out of school," he said.

"Freshman year, I was promised a scholarship and didn't receive it," marching band member Katherine Horne said.

These band members said they too were promised scholarships from the university, and like Linyard said, there's documentation to prove it.

Aaron Thomas was promised $2,000, but said he has yet to see a dime of it.

"They just give me the run-around, tell me talk to this person, talk to that person," Thomas said.

Band member Terrance Rowe said he was promised a $1,000 a semester.

"I was promised a scholarship but didn't get one," Rowe said.

"I was offered the money in May when I auditioned," freshman band member Shevon Hubbard said. "So it should have been here by now."

Not a good look PV. I have heard other stories about some other band programs in the SWAC. One had so many things messed up that kids had to sleep in the bandroom and one only allows people that march in band to only take 13 hours. Hell you can't drop classes only taking 13 hours. smh

I want the kids to get their money, and I believe the administration should be more transparent. However, when I first saw this on Facebook, I felt like something was missing. TSU and PV kids are known for running to the media to get their story out, when 9 out of 10 this was caused by something the students didn't do to get what they are fighting for. The PV PR ep in the article alluded to the fact that the kids may have not met the grades and/or failed to turn in documentation. I saw this happen all the time when I was a student at TSU and when I interned at PV when I was in grad school at TAMU. So again the administration needs to be more transparent and tell the kids the truth about their money or the lack thereof, but the student's need to also handle thier business and quit running to the media instead of taking care of the issue in house. The media is not your friend young bucks!

Something doesn't sound right about this! I bet there is more information being left out.

Nah, I can believe it. My wife had a cousin at Alcorn and they recruited him to play drums and they "told" him he would get a scholarship. But when he got there, he was told there was no money for him. The thing that most people don't realize is that a LOT of parents still don't know how college works and that many things have to be taken care of BEFORE their child gets to campus. His parents kept calling for weeks and they could never get Griff. So I volunteered to call becasue calling that front desk saying this is Dr. so and so...always gets you passed right thru at a university. I got to Griff on the first try and had to listen to him try to BS me thru a full conversation. Basically, these directors just lie to these kids. There is not a lot of money out there. That is why these BAND alums need to get off of websites and start raising scholarhip money and travel funds.

The reason I say there's more is was he the only student? Why wait so long to follow up? Aren't Most scholarship agreements contract's? How was he able to stay in school so long with out this money?

I think he was lucky because he has it in writing but do you notice how many times that article uses the word "promised". These directors will tell kids they have a full scholarship and don't give them anything. ..and no he wasn't the only student. ..and he explained how he was able to stay in school. Did you read the article?

I can believe it also and this mess is one of the main reason that no-directing filling in mofo up at JSU now need to get the hell out of there. Students had all kinds of bills when it was time to pay JSU when they thought they didn't have any.

Yep. Thats how it was when I was at PV. The main ones complaining about financial aid and housing were the ones who didn't pay attention to deadlines but still tried to play the "victim".

He isn't the only student. The story had a group of students complaining.

All of this foolishness needs to be nipped in the bud... Some lawsuits need to fly also.

Sadly, our students don't have lawsuit money, so they just take what they get. They (students) are at a BIG disadvantage when this happens. To curb this, the parents need to STAY on top of things, or they could easily get run over.
