George Lucas: Hollywood Didn’t Want To Fund ‘Red Tails’ Because Of Its Black Cast

Don't get me wrong bruh, I think you believe i hate white folks. I don't, I just dislike rednecks.
Really?

If that's the case, why do you continually make blanket statements labeling all white people as racist or "sick" as you just did in another thread a few minutes ago.

The basic discussion in this thread has been is there a market for this movie. You are the only one making blanket racial statements.

It's possible to discuss investing in and marketing products to the different races and Americans in general without living in this jiggaboo, fear-of-the-white-man world that you live in. Being rational and realistic is not self-hate.

Get it together, Cee. The white man is not going to get you. I promise. SUJagFan is going to protect you from this scary white man. I promise.

Fair enough.

I don't deny racism exists. I'm aware that obstacles are placed in our way that impede our success. I detest racism and discrimination as strongly as anyone else.

I just don't feel that every decision that is unfavorable to black people is due to racism. Nor do I feel that all white people are inherently evil. There is no doubt that many of them are evil, but Malcolm X said something to the effect that men should not be judged by their heritage but by their deeds. Another great man mentioned something about wanting to be judged by the content of his character.

Before assuming a decision was made with evil intent, I prefer to give a man the benefit of the doubt and not label him simply because of the color of his skin. Isn't that what we've been fighting for all of these years?

I agree with you. All white people aren't bad, I just don't like these north alabama good ole boys. The ones I deal with who aren't from this area are cool.

I will be checking out this movie. Twice as of matter of fact. I understand what George Lucas was saying about Hollywood issues of not financing the distribution. For Hollywood not financing the distrubution is all about economics. They do have a hisory of what movies will do well and those that will not. You think if Blade was an all black cast would Hollywood have financed it! This movie has to do a 100 million on opening weekend,it just as simple as that. Anything less than a 100 million,Hollywood's attitude would be "I told ya so" that it would not be ECONOMICALLY successful. George Lucas spent a 58 million dollars of his own money to make this movie,I don't know how much he spent to promote it but I think he said on the Tom Joyner it close to 25 million or 30 million to promote it. That's why I am going to at least watch it twice on opening weekend. I really don't think the majority white America will turn out for this movie. And really I wonder how many black women and young girls will turn out for this movie. A lot of people don't realize black women make up the majority of the work force in the black community, that's a demographic that is overlooked by many. http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t02.htm

Answer: You go after the audience that George Lucas said that he wrote this for: teenage boys...and I don't think he said Black teenage boys. If you can get that audience, then you can get both their parents and grandparents. Play the patriotic card and get even more. It is all about marketing. The money is out there.

Unfortunately, there is not a market for toys with this movie, or there might be a wider immediate appeal.

I think boys won't have an issue with the film. However if a certain storyline in the film gets some major airtime-SISTAS might have issues with it. Hint-Becky.

Also some folks have issue with the marketing-with it being tagged as these guys helped change the war. Like with what Obama has done no one wants to give these guys credit for helping in the war.

The view points expressed by many folks on here are white Americas views that black folks don't like anything but comedy.

Well that is based upon PROFIT of those comedies. However they don't point out that anytime a black drama does come out-it does make back its budget (or at least half of it), sellout faster on DVD and the cast in those films go on to decent or better careers.

In the case of Blade you had something with a 20+ year history, 2 comic series, a run in the Ghostrider comic, hot actor in Wesley Snipes, Blade in the Spiderman cartoon series, action figure and an error that worked out for it. Blade movie toys came out 3 months before the film. So you had kids seeing the toys and that help ganin interest. Plus you had something called Buffy The Vampire Slayer roaming around to increase interest in vampires and I think the True Blood books were just starting as well.

I'm sure most of the gripes would be gone if this was a bout a white command with a black troop like we saw in Glory.

Do any of you all know that this is NOT the first time a movie was made about The Tuskegee Airmen? HBO made a movie about them back in 1995. Cuba Gooding, Jr. was in that movie as well. That movie was pretty good. I'm hoping that Lucas can make it as good as the HBO version of the movie.

It has a good script. Hope to see it this Sunday in Tuskegee.

Since it is a Lucasfilm and a film about Black History, I'll definitely go check it out. President and First Lady Obama are hosting a showing of it at the White House; the guests are the stars of the the movie.

I will see this as well.

Off topic. When will all these rich *ss *****s get together and create their own distribution channels and stop complaining about Hollyweird????????

You can get together all you like but it still comes down to one thing-DISTRIBUTION.

Will the Wal-Marts of the world take your product? Putting it in a black owned business won't work because not everybody will got to one or live near one. You do it online and you still have folsk that don't know how to shop online.

Will all movie theaters show your film? I was looking at the showing times for Red Tails in my city. It is not showing anywhere in theaters located near large black populations. I have to go to Cedar Hill to go see it now.

Rich *****es liek Jay Z and others won't do that beause they don't want doors getting slammed in thier face by Hollywood.

Also there is no demand for us to do our own films. If we TRY to do something that fit in the Tyler Perry universe or us acting like fools-we don't support. Folks are already protesting this film because of Cuba, Howard, the lack of black women inthe film, Method Man, too many dark skinned brothers in it or hate for the writer. SO why bother?
