Should "The Marching 100" be disbanded for a couble of years?

First of all, hazing occurs against people who are willing to make themselves vulnerable to it. So, if people cease to be willing, hazing will stop.

Well, DAContinent, how do you suppose we do that? Simple: send those to attempt to inflict the hazing to jail. These are adults. Jail is different from juvy. Once should be enough.

Man seriously, yall are going to far. Why are we going to disband a marching band for a couple of years because of some ignant kids mistakes? So should we disband congress and the senate for being stupid while we at it?

Cee,

Because nothing else has worked. It has always been "We gone stop it. We gone stop. ... wink, wink".... " These newbies are too soft". Then the next thing you know, the older ones are right back into it, and somebody else is getting hurt or killed. The entire culture has to change. That is the only solution. Only the amout of time should be an issue. One Year should be the minimum.

If FAMU is disband, that means every PWC and HBCU band in the country, along with football teams, and frats should be disband also.

FAMU paid out something like 1.8 million a few yeas back when a kid was hurt. After these parents get through suing ... the problem might be solved by itself. Something seriously has to be done about this hazing crap. At FAMU someone has DIED. They had been warned many times ... to no avail. You should not have to wait for someone to die. Yeah other organizations have been suspended and even kicked off campus ... but the problem seems to just come right back. These folks just don't listen.

They fired the band director. He said he had done everything he could do. It didn't work. What would you guys do? Sooner or later hazing always goes wrong. They expelled 4 students. Is Jail the only answer?

Agreed.

I wouldn't care if they are disbanded forever.

No band or other organization is worth somebody's life. Somebody DIED here people! Why is it so difficult to get you all to understand the gravity of that?

However, I agree that the problem may solve itself in this case. After the criminal and civil suits are completed, they may not have enough money to organize to bang on a rusty bucket. And the world would be better for it.

You best believe if someone dies those bands and frats or sports teams will be disbanded. Remember the kid who got killed at Baylor. It was not even a hazing thing. But they got rid of the entire ball team and coaches. Wisconsin has told their band. One more infraction from the Big 10 and they gone get suspended for more than a game or two. Third strike and they gone get run for the season.

We know hazing will continue to exist at all our schools. But something has to stop the madness or at least put a big dent into it where folks aint dying. I say that as a member of KKPSI, Masonry, and being a former member in the Jukebox when hazing was not discussed like it is now. I don't want to see anything detrimental happen to FAMU's band program. But they are going to have to do something just because too many incidents have happened at FAMU in too short of time. That goes for my alma mater too. SU can ill afford no more hazing issues after that last incident a few years ago with the kids going off campus and getting initiated for the Mellophone section. When these lawsuits keep coming to our schools and we have no money to pay for them. I am sure these Presidents will decide if having band is necessary. I hope it never gets to that. But when do you say enough is enough? I think once the investigation is over and all the culprits are identified, then FAMU has a decision to make. Maybe they take the stance of remaking the entire band. Each and every member. Put restrictions on the number of members. I think one way to help is stop trying to be 300-400. Maybe they need to be the Marching 100 for real for the next year or 2. But they will have to do something. They can't just roll back out on the field next year with no repercussions. Kid lost his life. That's as serious as you can get. This aint a few kids being made to do extra pushups or some kid getting paddled (not that I condone that either). But you and I know some of that isht will always go on.

Jackson State suspended 45 band members for hazing, but they never disbanded the band.

Nobody died and JSU don't have past lawsuits from hazing hanging over their heads like FAMU has had. Don't think the Feds showed up at JSU either.

That's because they also proved to the administration that it was false. Unfortunately it took about a week after the sentencing and the damage had already been done. The most the accused got was suspension from the semester and was allowed to return the next semester.

I actually think the solution is quite simple. During band camp registration, every student signs a release, releasing the University from liability should harm come to them at the hands of another student. The release would also stipulate the repercussions that would arise from confirmation of hazing activity. In addition to that, you bring all of the band students, dancing girls, flag lines, drum majors, band managers and other students into the band hall, lock the door AND YOU SPELL IT OUT IN EXPLICIT DETAIL THAT HAZING OF ANY KIND WILL NOT BE PERMITTED. You tell these freshman that if they allow an upperclassmen to coerce them into doing ANYTHING they're on their own. You tell the upperclassmen if they put their hands on a freshman, they will be expelled, and possibly arrested and prosecuted.

Then, you end the discussion by saying there are five or six people in this very room who have already been granted prosecutorial immunity in exchange for their cooperation, so nobody will know who's watching.

And then sit back and watch what DOESN'T happen. But as always, some idiot is gonna test the system, so you'll have to make an example out of somebody. And when that happens, the staff and administration needs to act swiftly and decisively, and the other students will fall in line.

These kids will start to realize that hazing is not worth sacrificing your future...

As much as I love the Sonic Boom, I be gott-dayummed if I bet my future on trying to get a muah-fugga to pledge the Mellophone section.. Man, phugg the Mellophones (and any other section) :D

I ain't worth it..

What happens when a fraternity or sorority is caught hazing? Isn't that chapter suspended? I know of several fraternities and a sorority that got suspended for hazing when I was at Alcorn. If fraternities and sororities get suspended for hazing, why should The Marching 100 be different?

FAMU already does all of that...heck, I've had to sit through a couple of Anti-Hazing forums as a student(it's mandatory if you join ANY organization on campus). At the forum they also cite former cases that FAMU had to go through...primarily the Kappa hazing case and the previous Marching 100 situation, I believe. They hand eash student a copy of the laws and statutes of Florida and then they make you sign an anti-hazing contract. If you lead the workshop early, you do not receive credit and can not join any organization.

The problem is that students don't care...well, didn't care until the events that happened after the Florida Classic.

Now if the results of the autopsy come back, and hazing is determined NOT to be the cause of death(even though it's been confirmed that hazing did take place), do you still disband the band, or do you suspend them for a while?

My point exactly.

No, I don't think FAMU's band should be disbanded.

I seriously think the only way to limit...then eventually stop hazing is if the law was equal on BOTH sides. When the person allowing him/herself to be hazed sees there are REAL consequences for participating in hazing activities...it will start to die down.

As long as all the blame and repercussions fall on one side of the "coin"...it will continue to go on as strong as it is...

I agree with you JR. I say cut the numbers in half like TNSU did. Remember TNSU was running wild like FMAU, then Prof cut their numbers in half and it died down. I don't think they should be disbanded, just a new strategy and reorganized. Maybe going down to a set number like 150 or 200. That 400 mess is out of hand and can't be controlled. Smaller numbers are easier to control.

So you are saying, cut the head off the snake?

Cut in Half and barred from performing at anything except home --- CAMPUS games. No travel, no special events.

Now that is how they really should do it. I agree 100%. Nothing outside of halftime, pep band and concert band.

What about Battle of the Bands where they get paid to participate?
Nope, that is rewarding them for a special event. Something has to be given up. They have to take that hit in their pockets. They should not be allowed to participate in anything outside of football, basketball and concert band. Self imposed sanctions like the sports programs who get caught cheating do to the team. Sectionals should only be for music for field shows and stand music. No fan fares or anything. This is what Morris Brown did back in 1987 when they had a bad case of hazing. Prof Johnson cut out everything.
