Is the 3rd Ward ready for a white coach?

I honestly think we are. If he can come in and win, I do not think it will be a black/white issue. From the folks on this board, and the younger folks in the alumni association, I know for sure it won't be that big of a deal. I honestly think he will be welcomed because he will be a fresh face with new ideas and a new mentality. I know he was at JSU, but I would not consider him another recycled SWAC coach. I would not be against this hire at all, and I think he would get the respect. Just my thoughts....

Do you see that in red and large fonts? If he can come in "and win". That's the key. What if he doesnt come in and start winning? Are you all going to be patient enough to wait on a white coach to get his players in or are you all going to pull an Alcorn and start raising money to get him out during his 1st year?

Lets face the facts...tsu's reputation in texas isn't that great so this might work out in their favor. To some blacks, theres a sense of validation that comes from having a white man associated with an institution. To some, a white man will "legitimize" the program. He might be able to go into homes and get recruits that ordinarily wouldn't have even considered tsu...(and I'm talking about black kids...we're not gonna even bring up the increased potential to lure others). I don't think there will be much push back from tsu's alumni

Coach Hughes was the Associate Head Coach, he was next in line after Big Daddy died...Shannon was not passed over!

In my opinion, Shannon was passed over. Hughes may have been the associate head coach, but what specifically did Hughes accomplish for JSU, that made him a more accomplished assistant than Shannon? From a business mindset, it's never about who's next in line, it's always about who can be the most productive for the company. Coach Hughes was not the most productive/accomplished assistant coach for JSU.

That is what I want to know though - do you JSU people consider him a winner? It seems like he has won everywhere he has been, but is there more to the story that we don't know? I think we would be patient, as long as the program is going in the right direction. I think TSU is actually one of the few schools in the SWAC who would be okay with a white coach.

Nope - I would definitely be against raising money to buy out a coach. To me that sends the wrong message to the students because that $175K could go towards scholarships or be put into an endowment. We are not Penn State or Texas A&M who alumni give enough to do both, so we should not be raising money to get rid of coaches, especially after one year. Again, that is my sole opinion.

You're absolutely correct. You guys would receive a very well accomplished coach with no baggage. I can tell you this, It won't take him long because he's use to working with less. JSU only had probably 36-39 scholarships when Shannon was at JSU, and he still got the job done and was nationally recognized for his success at JSU. Shannon is a beast.

I did not want to say that, but yep this is true. Just like some of us were discussing yesterday - black kids tend to respect and play harder for White coaches than Black coaches. P88 tried to explain it, but I still don't buy the reasons why. However, I do recognize that it happens.

Thanks for the info RB.

"Race was not a factor when I was looking for a coach," Carson explained in The Jackson Clarion-Ledger. "I was looking to hire a coach that could put some points on the board. I looked at his resume and it was impressive. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1355/is_n9_v86/ai_15551674/

It doesn't take an intelligent person to figure out that coach Carson hired the right man for the job regardless of color. I hope TSU is smart enough to do the same in regards to looking at all of the facts...his resume, and making the best business decision for TSU.

What do you mean by accomplished, meaning adulation from external sources (Awards) or the lives that he impacted and changed of guys he coached throughout his tenure at JSU... Don't get external praiseS confused with value to a program....Judge had far more value to the program than Shannon.

Personally, I don't agree with it because doing so says ALOT about how some of us view ourselves. But like you, I recognize that it happens. And the media will fall all over themselves to cover a "white saviour" story so watch how the Houston Chronicle does an about face in how it covers tsu.

Thanks for the info RB.

No problem. He will certainly be a nightmare to opposing SWAC schools if he's successful. The good thing about Houston is the money that surrounds the city. I won't be surprised if athletic fundraising for TSU is doubled/tripled if TSU makes history by hiring its first white HC. Them white folks in Houston will be more than happy to open their pocket books for Shannon. Yeah, TSU would benefit in many ways. Again, at the end of the day, it's about making the best business decision for TSU. It's no different than Bear Bryant(Alabama) playing USC just to prove a point to a racist fan base. Well, look at Alabama and the rest of the SEC conference today....a billion dollar company off the sweat of predominantly black athletes.

...but is that the best business decision? At the end of the day, it's about who's more productive in terms of dollars and cents. Athletics is a business.

Of all the qualified black coaches, you want to hire a white one? I wish you all were alumni at Alabama or LSU trying to get a black coach hired. TSU needs a young entergetic guy that knows the real situation with what's about to happen. Why hasn't TSU ever had a Head Coach from Houston? Or Texas? That's why they get disrespected in recruiting.

Huh? Is Mack Brown from Texas? Kevin Sumlin? Frazier?

You aren't making sense....JSU had its highest attended seasons under Hughes reign...thus equates to dollars...what evidence do you have that will substantiate your claims that Shannon would have been a better business decision? Please do tell....

So your saying since we are a hbcu we must hire a black coach? I don't agree with you

If Hughes was doing so well, then why was he fired?

Why do you feel like this? I will wait to hear your response, but I think your close-minded approach is what has the SWAC going backwards instead of progressing. Also, I think your comparision to Alabama and LSU lobbying for a Black coach is flawed. I am gald our AD is looking beyond color and actually comparing resumes, which typically does not happen in the SWAC. I understand your point about a young, energetic coach, but our administration wants a proven winner, and I support that.

I guess the point missed you or you are so blinded by your fascination with Shannon. Shannon is a good coach that has been fired a couple of times since he left Jstate, does that make him a bad coach. Keep up please.

Resumes are fine. Don't say kids play harder for a white coach though. Kids play hard for who they think cares about them.

TSU has been down this road before with getting a proven winner. I would like to see the school go with a young guy who can recruit. Steve Wilson was supposed to be proven. J. Cole was supposed to proven. Also, you must realize what's going on at TSU. Post-Season Bans are coming, Loss of scholarships have already happened, and they still have to go see the NCAA in February to determine the outcome of the investigation is (It's not over).

There's a young guy on staff there from Houston on staff now, no one will give him a chance because you all will be close-minded and say that he's too young.
