Results of a survey showed that more than half of men would break up with their girlfriend if she gained weight compared to only 20 percent of women who would do the same.

Askmen.com in partnership with Cosmopolitan.com surveyed a group of 70,000 people on whether or not they would dump a partner for weight gain, amongst 38 other relationship questions.

48 percent of American men answered "Yes" when to the prompted question, "Would you dump a girlfriend if she became fat?" Of the women who were asked the same question, only 20 percent responded "Yes."

According to "The Great Male Survey" mission statement, the purpose of the survey is to "shed serious light on how the modern man thinks and behaves professionally, romantically and in his downtime, in 2011."

I been in this situation. A little is understandable. Babygirl jumped 35 lbs though after we started dating. I felt bamboozled. However, I didn't up and dump them. I actually encouraged them to come to the gym with me and such but she said I was pressuring her to lose weight.

Now, if I gain too much weight, my girl will quickly tell me that I am getting "fluffy" and need to hit the gym a little harder. I appreciate that. As far she is concerned. I been looking for a way to put 10 lbs on her.

This why I don't fat fine as you guys call thick. One or two good beers and two cheese burgers and whoa momma, you can't get back in my bed.

Some men have this problem as well. I just can't see myself letting myself go. I would be miserable.

I think any man that truly cared about his woman would be concern if his woman gained weight. Although some people like to claim it's possible to be both fit and fat, at some point the excess weight catches up with a person. Seeing someone you love deal with the ravages of diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure is no fun. I wouldn't want that to happen to my worst enemy much less someone I love dearly.

Some people make excuses for and accept being overweight. In that situation, I can't blame someone for deciding not to deal with those issues and move on to something else.

:(

Gotta agree with you there.

I don't think a person should just dump a person just because they've gained weight. That's just shallow and that person needs to improve on their "mind/spirit" just as much as the partner who needs to lose body fat. Try some encouragement and offer to help work out or something.

I tell ya one thing, I much rather be with a person who is overweight (and actively working on their health) than to be with a fit and trim arsehole who is about as emotionally/mentally deep as a kiddie pool.

I don't think not dating overweight people makes one shallow or an arsehole. That's like saying all fat people are lazy and have no self-control. Blanket statements like that are not fair to anyone.

There could be practical reasons for that decision as I stated before.

This is an unfair question and it's subjective, I didn't see in the article where it said how much weight. Amount comes into play, where is the extra weight, and how does she wear it? too many variables. Also like jsupop said, you can head it off, by hitting the gym early.

No, it's one thing to just not date overweight people. It's your preference and not hurting anyone. We're talking about dropping someone who gains weight after you've been with them. That's shallow and could hurt your significant other.

And I didn't say that men who didn't date overweight women were shallow. I said I'd rather date an overweight person THAN someone who is fit and a shallow arsehole. Everyone who is fit is not shallow or an arsehole. I was just making a point of what I would RATHER have.

Crit, that one doesn't always work. Some women (and men) get offended at the suggestion of hitting the gym or dieting. Even when one offers to do it with them.

I'm the same way. I cant bring myself to just let my self go off. I run into high school class mates..and alot of them let themselves go...we not even at our 10 year reunion mark yet.

I think it goes both ways tho. If one partner is active and keeping themselves right..i think it would be messed up for the other to not care and let themselves go. Esp if they complain about it all the time..and dont actively work on fixing the gain.

You can put a fork in that! Well said!

Then why get involved with someone in the beginning who doesn't share your same lifestyle when it comes to health and being active? That's something you can know up front about their commitment to health and staying in shape.

Please don't take offense to this Pops; it is asked with genuine curiosity and respect only: who are you to offer a person to "hit the gym"? What makes you think a person wants to "hit the gym"? If you're the type of person who is insecure with letting yourself go, what makes you think that person feels the same about themselves as you about yourself?

Again, this is pure curiosity because I'm trying to develop some kind of understanding men and their logic in this.

I look at it like this...If I wanted to date some overweitght...I would have approached an overweight woman....so I met and fell in love you at a size 5 or 6...so I'm expecting you to stay that size...I just have a preference *shruggs*

BTW nothing wrong with an overweight woman....they seem to care more...but again...if you coming into the relationship fine...I'd expect you to remain fine...just like I would try and remain fine for you

Sorry Crit...if that lady gains a bit of weight...due to eating...she gotta go...and if she refuse to hit the gym...she gotta go...
that's that getting too comfortbale stage...

lol @ who are you? that his mate..he should be able to make suggestions in a relationship. Thats like saying...who are you to offer a person a meal? It seemed like a suggestion and not a demand from what I read.
