Jackson State's and Alcorn's Athletic Budgets loses funds

App State got their money based on beating Michigan and getting exposure which led to more students getting enrolled. App State has 18K students. They are as big as Ole Piss and Ms State. They were not broke in the first place. Those FCS schools that win consistently are lower FBS level schools masquerading as FCS schools. LOL. Do some research on the top schools. Some are the flagship schools in their state....ie Montana, UMass and Delaware and others like Villanova could be FBS with the money they ALREADY have. FCS playoffs didn't make them have money all of a sudden. They already had it.

Yes...those schools have bucks. However, I think we should schedule and play them during the regular season. We have become too isolationist in our scheduling. When I was growing up, Coach Robinson had the GMEN on the road playing Cal State Fullerton, Nevada Reno, Long Beach State who were all considered College Division teams just as we were...same size programs if not same size schools (enrollment). I remember watching the Grambling playbacks and seeing how we bottled up their Long Beach State's star player Terry Metcalf (the father) who played for the Cardinals and was much better than his son who some of you might remember being in the league for a while with the Cleveland Browns I think.

Playing those teams, put Grambling on the national map. It attracted students and players from all over. We need more exposure and not so much lip service about how great we are. I'm saddened to say... as a conference, we're not great anymore. But I really think we can be... we just need to come from behind the wall and play more FCS programs of national repute.

Two teams who play on NBC do not represent the conference, especially if one of them was 2-8 going into the game in 2010 and the other one set us back one hundred years due to an "infamous" halftime performance in 2007.

You do realize that Bama State plays on Turkey Day. While you are ranting about SU and Gram. We aint keeping the SWAC from isht. I am tired of folks complaining we are holding the conference back. Get the fugg out the SWAC then. Most of your schools are broke and nobody wants your arse in their conference anyway or you would be gone. Petition to go to the MEAC. Surely they will take you. Or the Southland. Let's see how rich and how much exposure and revenue sharing you get there. Go ahead and get the fugg on. Every year it is the same ole isht on how SU and Gram (folks forget about Bama State and their game) are fugging over the SWAC for some FCS playoffs that teams make no money. Unlike these white schools. Your alums aint going to give yall no more money for going to the playoffs than they already are. Why..........because they don't give a fugg about the playoffs. Many of you sit on this page and act like you speak for the majority of your alums when most of you don't. If you alums really wanted the playoffs so bad to play these FCS schools they would have had your Presidents front and center to let them know about it. They do for everything else. Obviously your alums and fans could care less and only want to play and show up in droves to see our schools play other HBCUs. And for the last time. Please tell your AD that you can play these teams in the regular season. Call up App State and go visit North Carolina. Do a home and home. And go to them first because we act like we should make folks come to us all the time like we run isht. If you bad........go ahead and show up on their doorstep and whoop them and then have them come back to your place the next season and whoop them again. You aint going to just luck up and beat those schools by showing up in the playoffs after playing everybody in the SWAC anyway. You got to get battle tested outside of your conference during the regular season. So all this whining about the playoffs and revenue sharing is moot. Go handle your own business first.

I agree about the regular season MB. I have argued that on here many times. That even if were eligible for the playoffs we would get whooped because we play none of these type teams in the regular season. We got to play those teams like you suggested. We need to do that first then worry about the playoffs.

What JR said... call em, schedule em, beat em. It's not to late for Braveheart's Braves... they only have 10 games scheduled so far.

It's sad isn't it... and our fans make excuses. After McNeese rallied to beat us for the second year in a row, Doug plainly stated that he didn't want to play them anymore and wanted to play traditional opponents. His reasoning was "they wouldn't play us in the day". I'm sure Doug feels that way...okay, I don't agree but let's say that's true. Let it go! In the meantime until he gets over is issue with that... play App State, Richmond, SF Austin, Central Arkansas, Jacksonville State. All FCS schools in areas that we recruit.

Pete came down here and was handling his bizness and scheduled SLC opponents Nichols and Northwestern...for some reason, he never fared well against Nichols but started off beating the brakes off Northwestern. Then he got caught up in salary and not facility upgrades and let his recruiting slip. Northwestern went on a win streak and then the on-campus loss to an underdog McNeese team that dominated plus losing to D2 South Dakato jackrabbits forced him to rethink playing those schools. Not smacking...but pointing out that we allowed our coaches to run from those programs.

PV used to play SLC schools...only problem is they played them when they weren't a good program. Frazier came aboard and righted the ship at PV, but unfortunately they stopped playing the SLC opponents. They had a game scheduled against Sam Houston (don't know who was gonna be home team) but PV appeared to have backed down and backed out. I'm sure they had a legit reason at the time...but wondering why they haven't rescheduled yet?

Again...not smacking or dogging our schools. But it sure looks like we're "ducking" folk to me!

PV has Texas State on the schedule this year......

if you have only 2 non-conference games you better be aware who you schedule...playing a home-and-home with a Southland can backfire if you don't get any revenue from it as D-1s call all the time looking for games with guarantees

2011-12 budgets
School Budget Chg.

Ole Miss $47.58M +8.9%
Miss. State $40.06M +7.2%
Southern Miss $20.19M +2.2%
Jackson State $6.03M -11.3%
Alcorn State $5.06M -4.6%
Miss. Valley $3.32M +1.3%
Delta State $2.90M +5.6%

Shows the percentages being cut from budgets and the money the state is taking away. Might as well say taken away to give to Ole Miss, Miss. State etc.

I sure wish that they would give a reason why they are giving such cuts cause it raise a lot of unnecessary questions and it puts these schools, those who are underfunded, at odds and with JSU with a 11.3% decrease is really scary!

You take the guarantee... I understand and respect that. We need all the cash we can get...but (in Grambling's case) we have the newly created Port City Classic that is an ideal venue for a neutral site game against a regional non-conference FCS or maybe even FBS school.

Say it for what it is Biggs. Don't sugar coat it. :|

Gram has Concordia for homecoming and for the first time in 2 yrs & Lincoln University isn't tabbed as PV's designated HC opponent. I don't know what Gram hopes to gain by slaughtering Concordia. :smh: PV does have an all D-I FCS schedule this fall. I was quite shocked. lol

Those dudes used to cheat their tails off when SU went to play at Nicholls State.

It appears we might be locked into matchups with FAMU and Tennessee State for a while(which really isn't that bad).

this is not the last cut. i don't know how many times it can be said.... if we keep relying on the states to fund out institutions.... we are going to be dead soon.

I still believe that we are not maximizing our potential. Every home SWAC football game is important financially. We foucus on the "rival" games at home. On average there are only 1-2 of those a year. What about the non rival matchups in the SWAC. Those games are just as important and should the same impact. However when you see the dismal crowds in those non "rival " matchups that is money lost. Homecoming is a draw because of the weeks worth of activities. The game is the culmination of those activities. On average our SWAC schools play 4-5 home games a year. I know Alcorn is only playing three this year . It could have been a 4th with the GSU game but that game is in Shreveport. Does anyone think our stadiums filled with paying customers plus students who are paying into athletics with the activity fee which is revenue can genarate into decent if not significant dollars.

Man i have always said that most HBCU's could really increase their attendance if they simple promoted in the areas surrounding the university but that's not happening. For instance, Grambling should promote and advertise in Shreveport and Monroe hard, those are both black cities with many Gramblinites but the AD not being from this area really don't see it. The AD's are always poor mouthing and complaining about the fans, alumni but they aren't doing anything to attract and maintain the alumni and fans that do attend tha games. AD's need to try to get as many sponsors they possibly can, those partnetships/funds can be used to get billboards of the schedules put up on major highways etc. The AD's can work with the Mass Comm/Business Department to try to create videos for each sport to generate interest and excitement. It's not hard to do a video but we must be creative and try to create a viral video to really get people excited. HBCU's aren't using technology like they should.

Grambling needs to take advantage of the Port City Classic with some attractive matchups. A crowd of 30k at an avg ticket price of $20 means $600K gross revenue from ticket sales alone. You think I wouldn't try and fill that sumbitch to the brim. One thing I'd do is include the option of having the PCC as part of the Season Ticket package and promote the hell out of the Game AND Season Ticket Sales. There's plenty of Production companies headed up by young creative aggressive entrepreneurs who would give us a good product at a good price.. And I'd flood the Social Networking sites and YouTubes with it. I'd even buy some local television time to air the "Trailer" for the upcoming season... Shreveport, Monroe, Baton Rouge, Alexandria, New Orleans Market would be sent clips of the trailer and highlights from every game sent immediately from the game. Weekly Coaches Show on YouTube! We don't promote ourselves enuff.

You guys must not have been reading my posts where I said ban all teams that interfere in previous threads and posts IF they are not willing to compromise?

The only difference with Alabama State is that their game with Tuskegee is a non-conference game. The BC, on the other hand, is a conference game.

And I take it that you two cats haven't realized that when I say "SWAC Champion with automatic bid in the FCS Playoffs", I am assuming that ANY ONE OF THE TEN SWAC teams can be SWAC Champion. I do not want a SWAC Champion representing my conference who is not adequately prepared in a timely manner, keyword on "timely". But please proceed on.

Don't worry, they'll realize that when it's too late. Grambling folks do not realize that Alcornites are not as "out of tune" as they think we are. The Port City Classic is Grambling's baby they wanted to have, not Alcorns. Alcornites are not too pleased that they will basically going to Grambling for the 3rd time in 4 years.

No one claims you bruh so how can you speak for someone who doesn't claim you? Many Gramblinites aren't excited we're playing Alcorn anyway in the PCC, many wanted a non HBCU team to play. The AD dropped the ball on that one but o well we still got to beat Alcorns azz.

There were no cuts by the state. It only pertains to the school's athletic budget, whether it increased or decreased from last year. The state has nothing to do with athletic budgets.

Not true. Many Universities get some support from the state that goes towards athletic budgets. Some are less dependant but still get funds from the state to add monies to their athletic budgets.

The schools actually get the money, but I thought the school President decided which departments the money goes to and how much of it. I stand corrected.

Dude, you obviously have no clue. It doesn't matter if Bama State plays an OOC game on Turkey Day....They aint eligible for the playoffs because they play the same week the playoffs start. It has nothing to do on WHO we play or that SU plays Gram. It's the fact that all 3 schools have a game the week the playoffs start. The bids go out the week before. Sheesh..... And again, if you want the playoffs so bad.....go tell your President and ask him or her to move to another conference then. We aint stopping nothing. Like I said, your alums and fans aint complaining about the FCS playoffs. None of our schools alums and fans are. Only the select few. It they did, then maybe something would change. All this ranting and raving about the FCS playoffs when our ADs aint calling none of the FCS tough teams for games is crazy. How you going to beat teams like that if you don't play them every year in the regular season. You got have a schedule to prepare you for the playoffs. So even if we had the auto bid......we would be beaten in the first round as always because we aint ready to compete outside of the SWAC and HBCU land or dare say it D2 and below land. Even then we are getting whooped. You got to crawl before we walk and walk before we run. Play the damn teams in the regular season. But first get your Presidents to stop whining about money games and make Sharp schedule only 8 in conference games.......get rid of the SCG and then start playing good FCS programs in the regular season and see where you are at. We got more issues than just that auto bid. How do you really think our SWAC champion would have fared last year against the number 1 seed on their turf after just playing only US schools.

BTW, after you convince the council of Presidents to kick those 3 schools out. You better be writing some checks to them so they can meet budgets for wanting to go to that non revenue making FCS playoffs. Since you want it so bad....I assume you will donate like James Madison alums or Montana, Delaware and Eastern Washington alums. White folks don't mind showing up for games and supporting their schools with some money or even care who they play. We on the other hand need Classics and other incentives to get people to show up. So yeah pitch that to the Presidents and ADs and see how far you get. They ask you to show them the money. It's a shame we don't care about every game our schools play. But it is what it is.

He's just mad that GSU and SU does whats best for them and he has no power over that. He's just wasting air.
