Jackson State's and Alcorn's Athletic Budgets loses funds

If I am a good SWAC Commissioner, I want to think what is best for the WHOLE CONFERENCE. I would not let two fellow institutions dictate how I should plan for the
whole conference. If they do not want to Compromise moving their game when it is clearly in the way of the FCS playoffs, they are going to have to give up something to meet halfway. They cannot have their cake and eat it too. It doesn't work like that.

I am looking at positive vision that benefits EVERY SWAC MEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because he's not envious like you...

The Bayou,Capital City,Magic City Classic are played between the same two teams. I'm talking about the invitational classics. Atlanta Classic,Gateway Clasic,Chicago Classic. I know that last year when Alcorn and Mississippi Valley played in the Chicago Classic both schools came home with very little if any money. The classic paid expenses for the football teams and bands . I understand the importance of displaying your brand in Chicago which has a large alumni base of Alcornites and Miss Valley supporters.

Can someone name three invitation football classics that are profitable for SWAC schools. I am not talking about paying expenses and call it a day. If we were filling our football stadiums every home game there would not be as many of our teams playing in these classics. I am not anti-classic. I would like to see some reasonable guarantee money with these games like the schools get for playing a div I-A opponent.

Everyone talks about the benefit of playing in the FCS playoffs in terms of exposure and being a part of FCS fully. Cool... but why don't we read any comments suggesting that we simply schedule these same schools during the regular season? Please take a look at your non-conference opponent and tell me which FCS school you scheduled? Why aren't you playing them? Not enuff revenue? Not enuff exposure? Please Explain.

That is what I have been saying for the longest. What is stopping us from seeing Jackson State vs. Northwestern State again? What is stopping a Prairie View A&M vs. Sam Houston or a Texas Southern vs. Stephen F. Austin matchup? How about a Grambling vs. McNeese State, UAPB vs. Central Arkansas, Alabama State vs. Georgia Southern, Alabama A&M vs. Appalachain State, Alcorn vs. Southeastern, Miss. Valley vs. Nicholls(that would be a pretty even matchup), and Southern vs. James Madison? Yes, some of those OOC matchups might be blowouts, but playing those tough regular season games are eventually going to make our teams stronger during the season. You can't just jump to the playoffs and hope for success by playing the OOC teams that some of our schools have on their schedule every year. You have to play those playoff quality teams during the season so your team can get used to playing that caliber of team. Not to mention it would elevate the playing level of the conference.

Does anyone think that becoming the best at the level that you are in mean something. We are in I-AA football. The SWAC is a division I conference with an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships in every sport except football. Is there any real energy from fans to want to be the best. My philposphy is that if fans and everyone involved Comish, Presidents etc.. take that attitude then at some point it will translate into more dollars. Branding and Marketing the conference at our schools would be easier instead of harder. The SEC literally markets itself and with the huge TV contract(s) the money is pouring in. Until or unless we improve our visability in Football and pack our stadiums every Saturday and I am not talking about the rival games every home game rival or not should be full . If we do that then every school will make money. That will carry them throughout the rest of the year and help pay for the other sports. Classic games are fine for exposure but how many of the "CLASSICS" really pay significant dollars. Other than the Circle City. One can't expect help if we don't help ourselves. Football drives the athletic wheel at all of our schools. We need to maximize our potential.

Not with the majority of this bunch. They just want to be good enough to beat each other. :smh:

At least two posters on TSPN Sports understand my point of view. But yes 83, Sad, but true...:smh:. Scared of Competition......Scared of TN State becoming a member of the SWAC...

How are we scared of competition when many of us play FCS schools? It's up to the AD's to schedule quality FBS schools. Since when did the fans decide what schools we play?

Doesn't matter what state, the flagship university(ies) gets the most money...

Two teams who play on NBC do not represent the conference, especially if one of them was 2-8 going into the game in 2010 and the other one set us back one hundred years due to an "infamous" halftime performance in 2007.

Scared? You do know since 2002 Grambling has played McNeese (twice), San Jose, Washington State, University of Houston, Pittsburgh, University of Nevada, Northwestern (twice), Oklahoma State, ULM, La Tech and that's just the PWC's and not counting the teams that we've played before 2002 so Grambling isn't scared of competition and like someone else said the AD's makes the schedules, not the fans.

When scheduling Div I-AA subdivision schools you are looking at in a hand full of ways:

You can schedule those schools in a "Home and Home". There is no money changing hands. Your guarantee is your home game and selling it out. That is your guarantee. The same goes for the other team. Back in the Mcnair era Alcorn played Sam Houston State in a "2 For 1 deal" That means Alcorn played at Sam Houston State twice and Sam Houston came to Alcorn once. Alcorn got a guarantee for that deal. You can get a guarantee for played at another I-AA subdivision school. The guarantee is not nearly the same as it is for a I-A school. The reward you receive will be more than financial if you win these games.

With the nine game mandate in place there are only two games you can schedule some years three games when schools can play twelve games. How do we make the most out of every home football game financially . With a few exceptions most of our stadiums seat 20,000 plus. Students are paying into athletics with the activity fee thru their tuition which in reality is a season ticket to all on campus home games . Most of our basketball arenas seat 6-8000 with a few exceptions. Is it unrealistic to see our stadiums and arenas filled on a regular basis. Is it the product? Is it the price of the product? Or is it how we package and sell the product? Less state money for athletics will be the rule and not the exception. Therefore tuition and activity fees will continue to increase. We control our own athletic fate.

And you forgot about a team that has never been to the SCG and doesn't have to worry about the playoffs. Namely Alcorn. When u can atleast represent the East in the SCG then u start worrying about who reps the conference.

Dude is from Alcorn, he hasn't realized yet they have no power. If they shown they were a factor after McNair left maybe things would be different. They have allowed Prairie View and Texas Southern, teams that used to be down in the dumps get above them and win SCG's. Hell Bama A&M came from D2 and won a SCG but dude wants to criticize two programs that own them.:emlaugh:

Exactly.

Although many people are not in favor of the I-AA playoffs for financial reasons lets look at what it would take for a Swac team to be in the FCS Playoffs.

1. The Swac does not have an "Automatic" bid. There are three teams that have classics the week that the playoffs start. GSU,SU,Alabama State. Eliminate those teams right off the bat.

2. That leaves seven teams of those teams three would need to be nationally ranked. One team from each division plus another team. Record wise all three teams would need to be at least 9-2 and nationally ranked . For example TSU with a 10-1 record could represent the West . Alabama A&M 10-1 would represent the East and play in the SCG. Alcorn could be 9-2 finish in a tie with Alabama A&M with a 8-1 division record with the only loss coming to Ala A&M. Alcorn wins a quality and or ranked I-AA subdivision opponent and they could get an at large bid. Did I leave out something? What do you think? Is it a dream or can this happen?

That's a given and has been said time and time again. You do know SWAC teams went to the play offs in the past while the Bayou Classic was in place so no sweat on us, your gripe is the SCG. FYI, The SWAC has "NEVER" had an "Automatic" bid.:pimp:

It can't happen due to the SCG being in the way of the playoffs, not the Bayou Classic nor Turkey Day Classic.:

Once again, you eliminate the SWAC Championship Game, then you would be able to have teams go to the playoffs. The SWAC participation in the playoffs ended the same year that the SWAC Championship Game started.

Simple enuff... but for some reason, our coaches are reluctant to play these other FCS conferences. We had 17k when Grambling played McNeese... but we didn't continue the series. SU had a nice crowd, but they didn't continue the series. We create the PCC in Shreveport and rather than use it to schedule SF Austin or Central Arkansas to a neutral site venue, we decided to play Alcorn this year and next. Alcorn is one of our top on-campus draws, next year we could have had the PCC revenue AND the Alcorn home game revenue. I hate to say it, but I think our coaches and our fans are afraid to matchup up with the SLC and OVC. Damn shame really... we have equal or better talent (on the field).

I've been saying this forever. We're talking playoffs, playoff, but the fact remains that even if we were to start going to the playoffs on the regular the outcome would be the same. First round elimination. We need to schedule these teams during the season and becoming accustom to them and beat them. This will then force them to push the playoffs out a week so we can play without giving up the SCG.

Eastern Washington won the FCS Playoffs Championship game this year...I'd much rather see how Grambling fares against them than I do Concordia?

I dee-double-dare you to tell your statement above to Appalachian State.

App State got their money based on beating Michigan and getting exposure which led to more students getting enrolled. App State has 18K students. They are as big as Ole Piss and Ms State. They were not broke in the first place. Those FCS schools that win consistently are lower FBS level schools masquerading as FCS schools. LOL. Do some research on the top schools. Some are the flagship schools in their state....ie Montana, UMass and Delaware and others like Villanova could be FBS with the money they ALREADY have. FCS playoffs didn't make them have money all of a sudden. They already had it.
