No I am not happy; I was saying it in a sarcastic manner. The NCAA has hammered Texas Southern with scholarship reduction regarding our APR scores. Had they banned us from postseason play I would be first in line to say we need to take our medicine and get our shit together and try again next season (2012).

But the SWAC Football Championship isnt post season play.
 
Some of you people have some low standards and allow your school pride to push you hell bound. No team that the NCAA banned should be able to play for a conference championship, nor tournament, nor play-offs. Morals, Ethics and plain do right is really becoming extinct. Can some please explain to me why should a team be allowed to play for a conference championship when they didn't meet the APR standards? Isn't that defeating the purpose and putting sports over academics?

:lol: You are funny. Has nothing to do with school pride. If the NCAA says we can play, why should we punish ourselves extra.

"The auditors found that 95 of the 104 athletic events the university participated in were not supported by signed contracts between the competing schools, including 67 Southwestern Athletic Conference events and the Bayou Classic football game."


They need to discuss this at the SWAC Meeting. It makes all of us look bad ... not just Southern and Grambling

And thats another thing thats wrong with this conference. Everyone and their moma knows that football will be more SUcessful in Jackson, baseball in BR, but just because of selfishness they would rather it fail in another city. Sad.

This is true. They have been saying those things for decades despite strong evidence to the contrary. Some of the APR numbers did not help in the public relations department. I am also always suspicious of measures suggested and passed by big schools since they usually pass measures that will benefit them most. However, it is for another discussion.

Man Sharp is so fake. Dude is scared to voice his opinions on some issues but will on others. Be a man. The SWAC needs a leader and he is not one.

True. You and most people know that HBCU's are left out to dry so that's why we must take care of our own business. Our leaders and coaches must be held accountable. Damn a raise if Johnny, Ivan, Boomquisha, Amy and Dee-bo doesn't take their azz to class. The entire team sometimes has to suffer to get a big point across.

That's not how it works fella. JSU has APR problems like majority of the SWAC schools but some are just more serious. As you can tell from this thread alone, most in the SWAC wasn't focusing on the APR much until the high profile schools had issues. I guess the SWAC Office didn't think this would happen. Can't cry over spilled milk all you can do is make sure you start from somewhere and have a plan in place for future spills. Nothing more, nothing less.

You still didn't post the pre-conditions the SWAC already has in place for those who are below APR status as it relates to the SCG.
Did the Presidents say beforehand that they would abide by the NCAA rules and ban schools from the SCG? No, they didn't.

The SWAC commissioner dropped the ball on this. He should've recommended last year that pre-conditions be in place just in case schools didn't meet NCAA APR standards, then there would be no need for a vote by Presidents.

You're basically saying that to make the SWAC look good in the eyes of the NCAA, they should throw member schools under the bus just to appease them? Is that what you're saying.

DUH the SWAC Office didn't have rules for the APR situations. I could give a damn about the NCAA, they are to dumb to realize the SWAC doesn't play in the play-offs and that they said the SCG isn't post season so why rely on them? The SWAC should handle what the NCCA overlooked, that's what i'm saying. The SWAC Office should step up and make some guidelines concerning teams and APR. Hell if they don't, they might as well allow Grambling Basketball team play in the tournament and if they win it go to the play-offs because Grambling has put in for a waiver that will more than likely get the NCAA to lift the ban for the basketball team to play in the post season due to the set up for athletes academic program, more seniors on the team graduating and improved APR score for the basketball team.:read:

I understand. If the present leaders of our schools remember the lessons that the HBCU leaders (living and dead) of the past taught, then I feel that we can solve these problems.

True. Tough Love usually works. The Administration must make sure they are doing their job and make sure everyone else is overlooking the athletes. They shouldn't have to but they have to because the APR seems to effect HBCU's harder because of the image already pictured that HBCU's don't care about education and allow anyone into the institutions.

You know APR tracks back 4 years. Some of these kids wasnt even in college then.

Dude, you seem to be contradicting yourself or perhaps you don't understand how the NCAA works. This rule was put in place with no HBCU's in mind, the very schools that allow the most low-performing athletes into institutions of learning perhaps in the nation.

And we still have compliance officers who don't know how to accurately calculate the numbers or "get over" on the system like the schools who can afford mutliple compliance officers. Coaches still don't understand it five years later.

Just keep in mind that when the NCAA makes up rules like the APR, they're surely not doing it for the benefit of HBCU's.

Look at the number of basketball players that haven't graduated from Kentucky over the last two years. Where are their penalties? Guess what, they have none.
The main key to staying out of APR trouble is not whether players graduate, but whether they are in good academic standing when they leave. So when John Wall goes one-and-done but finishes the spring semester, Kentucky doesn’t get penalized.
Go figure.
 
So from what i'm getting from SU Jag and Jayrob, no one should be banned since the APR is so unfair. Interesting.

Thats not what I Said. You have to ban basketball because they arent elgible for post season play and the basketball champion will participate in post season play. Football since there isnt post season play, there is no need to ban anyone.
 
Another thing is when players decide to leave on their own without completing courses, the school takes an APR hit. Coaches can't control that.
At HBCU's we get these type players all the time because we're trying to give them second chances, hoping they'll endure, but oftentimes they don't.

So what’s the NCAA’s answer to programs that can’t manipulate the APR? They take away scholarships, which isn’t a penalty for the program as much as for athletes. Following the NCAA’s logic trail, the remedy for a program struggling academically is to take academic opportunities away from kids.

Schools that have a high APR and a low graduation rate are exploiting these kids.
More hypocrisy from the powers that be.
