De Leon pitches Jaguars to win in second game

Saturday afternoon, as he stood on the mound at Lee-Hines Field, Southern right-hander Jose De Leon was a little tired and a little upset. He wanted to finish the eighth inning of Saturday’s second game against Prairie View.

But De Leon, a freshman from Isabela, Puerto Rico, remembered what the coaches from back home told him: If the crowd is on its feet and the public-address announcer calls you by name, tip your cap.

So at 4:58 p.m., after De Leon retired the first batter in the eighth, assistant coach Fernando Puebla came to the mound to take him out. The fans stood, and De Leon’s teammates emptied out of the dugout for congratulatory handshakes.

The moment arrived, and as De Leon grabbed the bill of his cap, he felt another rush of energy.

“The adrenaline you get in that moment — it’s crazy,” De Leon said. “I really appreciated that from the fans and (my) teammates.”

Man errors killed us. Game 2 was blown open on a routine fly ball to left that was dropped. Problem was, it was bases loaded with 2 outs. The runners were moving on the pitch and all 3 scored. Shoulda been inning over.
 
Didn't Bama State split a doubleheader with Grambling, losing game one 6-4 and winning game two 6-3? If so, Fiyah's scoreboard needs to be changed.

:nod: SU needs to get Garcia, Foster and Holliday going and those exhibition games will help them before the tournament. They cannot afford to have any starter walk the 1st 6 batters. :no:

Trust me they got an ear full. The team played with no enthusiasm this weekend as if Bama State would just lay down to them, that's why we didn't blow em out in Game 1 like we should have and lost Game 2. Can't take anyone lightly just because the East games don't factor in the West standings. It's spring break this week so they will have an ample amount of time on their hands to even get better to prepare for this upcoming weekend against TXSU.

We must have slept thru the first game or something lol... I was expecting a sweep this weekend so we could keep pace with ASU and JS-Who...

Looks like Valley slept the entire weekend and lost the series to AAMU.

Steal of home, pitching gem earn series victory

Stealing home? That’s a completely different affair, no matter the base runner. The last time Marrero tried a stunt like that, he was a sophomore at Milby High School in Houston.

Sunday afternoon, in the first inning of Southern’s 7-0 victory over Prairie View at Lee-Hines Field, he saw a chance. He took it. And he made it.

“It’s been awhile since I did something like that,” Marrero said with a devilish grin.

Marrero’s steal of home highlighted a three-run first inning for the Jaguars, and Cody Hall threw an eight-inning gem as SU shut out the Panthers for its second win in the three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division series.

“I really think that (steal) got the kids in the right mood,” SU coach Roger Cador said. “Once we got the runs, Cody was able to make them stand.”

:nod: :nod: He didn't have a good game against Grambling either so I'm not sure if his injury is still bothering him. It's unsual for any pitcher to walk 6 straight batters. I hadn't seen that before and I don't care if you suck. You may walk 6 total but 6 in a row. :no:
