NEW ORLEANS -- One of America's top 10 marching bands is set to lead the Mardi Gras' main event, the Krewe of Endymion.

The 230-strong University of Alabama A&M Marching Maroon and White said they can't wait to bring excitement to the streets of New Orleans.

Organizers said the marching band, touted as “the Show Band of the South,â€￾ has been turning heads and winning awards at many high profile appearances since 1890.

In addition, the band has provided Atlanta Falcon halftime entertainment at Fulton County Stadium, played at the All American Bowl at the Alamo Dome, played at Disneyland and was named the lead band for the Tournament of Roses parade.

You going to be out there?

I wonder if the route still passes down Canal in front of Easton...if so I may catch it there

Yeah J, when I come home for the Zulu Ball Friday, I will be there until Mardi Gras night. The Endymion is back on the City Park route. We set up shop on Canal and Jeff Davis right in front of that entergy payment center. I'm like you, how did this happen?

St. Aug Band Won't March In Rex Parade
Lineup Conflict Prompted School To Withdraw

NEW ORLEANS -- The St. Augustine High School marching band will not be in the Rex parade on Fat Tuesday this year, the krewe confirmed Monday.

The organization that produces Mardi Gras' signature event issued a statement in response to inquiries from WDSU about the school's participation in next week's parade. According to that statement, the popular and decorated student band asked to march ahead of another local high school marching band, Warren Easton.

Rex turned down the band's request. St. Augustine -- known as the "Marching 100" -- marches on Mardi Gras day every year, alternating between Rex and Zulu. Warren Easton marches in Rex every year.

So what parades will St. Aug be in this year? Last few years the've been in BR for some parades, but that didn't happen this year.

New Band Director. The previous band director lived out here and brought them here for the Alumni. He's currently over the LLI band program.

Culture Watch: That's the St. Aug Marching 100 on aisle two

I wonder how many towns celebrate themselves in as many varied ways as we do? I know there are those who think some of our self-congratulations are corny, and I guess they are.

But, I’ll admit it, I love it.

Take the Rouses TV spot aimed at folks who are gearing up for Carnival. There are the St. Augustine Marching 100, some Mardi Gras Indians and their drummers, along with a couple of members of the-only-in-New Orleans kind of female parading group, the Baby Dolls. It must have been organized chaos to get such a collection of cultural characters together in order to sell crawfish, king cakes and party “samiches” to locals thinking about making Mardi Gras groceries.

Remaining parades are:
March 3rd Muses
March 4th Hermes
March 5th Endymion
March 6th Mid-City
March 6th Bacchus
March 7th Orpheus
March 8th TBA - was Rex
