In the SWAC, “Our limits have been reached,â€￾ says Braddy

coldsweat,
It's not an enlightened thought that $$$$ make things happen, not getting on a website and dreaming up ideas.

Not saying that MH at all! The money issue is something that no one can run from and is seriously a huge pothole in the road for many programs in this conference. I think the thoughts that are getting lost in translation however, is that we can not continue to stand pat and not plan to make a move just because we don't currently have all the resources in place to make it happen right now! No money is made by not dreaming, planning or by innovation!

Most of you would have us wallow in the same rhetoric for years without dreaming of a way to get out of our current situation. It's almost as if its taboo to think the opposite. With a sound financial plan, investors, and strong alumni support, it's feasible for any of the top programs in this conference to leave. Let this be main thesis of the conversation rather than the negative rhetoric that most of you want to spew!

like what? You look at the ULMs of the world...those folks struggle......

And still kick our ass and outrecruit us! Sure, their attendance numbers suffer tremendously until they call one of us to play them. But in the end, they still get more of the cake than we will ever dream of eating!

why wasn't Braddy's comments made when he was in office? That kind of fire would've been great but saying it now when he's retired looks odd....

On a good note, one thing that I do give JSU is the board of trustees are not like most HBCU's. They don't fight all over the news and TV. They work for the good of JSU. That might be their strong point to help them move forward.

It seems like SWAC folk hate change that hate talkin bout it they hate doing anything about it.........I say it time and time again the SWAC is practicing segregation all over again we refuse to join the rest of America.........

2. Mentally inept leadership and mentally inept coaching. :| From what I've ascertained lately, HBCU coaching "staff", "ADs," even the presidents and their lack of athletic knowledge aren't mentally capable of directing such a move. *thinking about current SWAC facilities and who has bleachers unfit for a jr high school* I've come to understand why and how certain schools avoid other schools, like a Sam Houston State, Stephen F Austin, McNeese State. The FACTUAL truth would come out how distanced in coaching and athletic student-athlete talent the divide really is so, most HBCU "staff" settle for Lincoln University, Langston, and Concordia while attempting to pull the wool over alum's eyes by attempting to appease them w/ an easy kill. :read: I even look @ the way HBCUs recruit and where they do NOT recruit. Sorry is as sorry does. :smh:

Agreed and we wonder why we dont get the recruits that lower FBS schools get this above is the reason.........

Guys, read this in big bold print:

"Winning Leads To Opportunities"

Plain and simple, the product the SWAC has put on the sports field lately has been horrible!!! However, I see some hope in Basketball with a few D-IA upsets as well as baseball and softball. However, the fact remains that football is the number one revenue drawing sport. All the problems associated with football revenue involve the product on the field. How does it help our conference when teams like Tuskegee, NW St, Arkansas-Monticello, etc. come in and beat our teams.

Improve the product on the field (WITHOUT THE EXCUSES OF FACILITIES) and watch and see things become better again.

Also, football SCHEDULING must improve drastically.

There is something called an arms race in college sports. It is basically the constant improving of athletic facilities to keep getting the better athletes (Texas A&M link). On this message board some of have talked about how many high schools have better facilities than many HBCUs. It is not just surburban schools but quite a few small town ones. In the book Black College Football: 1892-1992, Willie Jeffries, the former football coach at South Carolina State, said that Black Colleges are losing athletes because of facilities. The book was first published in 1993. The situation existed during the 1970s, and it exist now.

I will agree that winning helps, but things have to happen first in order for teams to win.

One difference i can tell you off the top is when we (GSU) made the Football announcement official, alumni started pouring money out of the woodworks. If you look at how the campus has expanded East towards Grady and North so quick its pretty amazing. From what im hearing they're looking to buy a large plot of land to the NW of campus... they dont plan on playing in the dome long..

I am not surprised. These are examples and lessons that administrators and others from our schools could learn.

I have always wondered this and it warrants more people analyzing his "timing!" It sort of comes across as "since I'm going out, Ima let the whole damn world see I how I feel! Fauck keeping this in and going by the politically correct route!"

Still, his suggestions do have some validity and we should consider such options if we are all to survive!

Agreed.

Braddy is sick. This is why he retired early. But he has started a great debate.

If the people in power have better ideas than the status quo yet don't have the ability to implement those ideas into positive change, what's the point?

I agree with a lot of what P88 has been saying. The problem with sTu and PV playing UH and Rice consistently is if sTu and PV are markedly better than UH or Rice they will not play either of us. They will only play us if the games are decided before the opening kick.

When we fielded teams with comparable talent and coaching they would not look our way. Only if the have a decided advantage will they even entertain the thought of playing us.

In truth I am torn about the money games. But then I don't have to make those menial budgets work.

while playing SHSU is great and fun.....when Michigan State offers $100K and Big 10 TV slot....your gonna dump them everytime

playing UH and Rice consistently makes more sense for TSU and PV

I have been saying this for eons BH123. I think you have to win before facilities can be an issue.

winning doesnt bring facilities atleast not in HBCU terms...Southern Grambling and JSU all had and still do winning programs......where are the upgrades in facilities.......Tuskegee been kicking arse where are there nice facilities? TXSo and Alabama State in a few years will have sum of the nicest facilities in the SWAC i....... Nice facilities comes from the administration and alumni leaders saying we are going to dedicate funds and create fundraisers to our athletic program to be the best.......App State had a 6 million athletic fundraiser to improve the athletic complex.......I use Oregon as an example in the late 90's their AD said we must dedicate ourselves to the athletic programs we must set ourselves apart be different to compete thats when they reached out to famous alum Phill Knight.......they sucked in 90's before they made that commitment to excellence..........

Tenn State has an indoor facility to that will look better than most FBS schools........hell Vanderbilt University (has money on top of money) right down the street doesnt have an indoor facility what has Tenn State won in the OVC.........

Do u understand that our LARGEST attendance every year is for a game 3 hours away in which we do not play a SWAC team...

Man stop it... if you can't honestly say JSU can travel to atleast 1 or 2 more NON swac games outside of Mississippi and have a large attendance supported by JSU folk.. why even make this comment?

The Packers practiced in an indoor facility in the Dallas area last week... they were supposed to practice at SMU but they didn't have an indoor facility, but a HIGH SCHOOL did, so that's where they went. Highland Park High School

Whats the point of paying $1.5 million to move up and play the same exact HBCU's that we play now?

To me, this question makes no sense. I'm sure that most conferences were formed from teams that were familiar with each other. Also, Just using JSU as an example, if we did move to 1-A with HBCUs, we would probably only play 5 of the same teams we played last year.... SU, GSU, TNState, AlaState (assuming they moved up with us) and Alcorn State as our (1-AA opponent, probably to start rather than end the season). We would have 7 new opponents including four 1-A teams and 3 other HBCUs we didn't play last year (A&T, FAMU, SCState if they moved up). Considering the HOPE that going 1-A will bring us better talent and coaching, I would HOPE that a 1-A GSU team would be better than a 1-AA GSU team? What's wrong with having 1-A HBCUs if we can sustain? ...and what is wrong with us playing each other? Also, it has already been proven that an HBCU can't do this alone outside of a conference and we also know that not even the Sunbelt would accept one of us. BUT we also know that the difference right now between us and some Sunbelt and lower teir 1-A teams is not all that great and we saw when GSU played ULM and La Tech, when Alcorn played ULM and when UAPB played NMSU.

So again, I don't understand your point.

I said over one hundred. man they really don't teach you youngin how to comprehend. Yall are to emotional. Facts son. Facts.

Cee, how the heck are we supposed to know that?

Heck I am an officer with GaTech and I don't know how much these people give. That aint' my business. Now, I could go to a JSU publication and read the list of names of those who give and how much but they are not my concern.

That would be the sensible thing... if the other larger HBCUs could join the SWAC and move up first and pave the way for other schools to do the same. The SIAC played football in two divisions in the 70s, but it didn't last because the larger schools left for the MEAC (SCST, FAMU, BCC, SAVST) and SWAC (ALST, A&M). If we worked together we could help support the larger schools helping to offset costs by stabilizing other sports, for the potential revenue sharing when they get on their feet in I-A, and then other schools that wanted to move up could do so with an smooth transition. However, that would take a lot of trust on the smaller schools that the first one's to move up won't leave them behind and also the larger schools to make sure they aren't supporting a group of welfare schools that don't want to spend the money to move up, but are happy collecting a revenue sharing check, which would affect marketability and also bring the overall image of the league down

The SWAC has had some of these ideas but they have not been discussed lately. The last time a two-teired SWAC was discussed was around 2001. In that plan: JSU, Grambling, AlaState, Southern, TNState, FAMU, SCState and A&T would be 1-A SWAC members with BCU, Alcorn,UAPB, TxSo, PV, AAMU and Valley making up a playoff eligible 1-AA SWAC. I think TNState was only going to join in football only and the other 14 members would split into EAST and WEST for all other sports. But the ADs who were putting this together are all gone now and that idea was probably never passed along. Also, in that time, the Tx schools have tried to make a committment to football.

Why pay all the cost of moving up if you gonna wait until a half dozen of the same teams you play now to move up with you. Why take on all the FBS expense just for the sake of being FBS if you gonna stay in the exact same football playing click................THE HBCU WORLD. HBCU's hold themselves back by always waiting on "others" to do stuff with them. It is like we talk all this "big dog talk" but are scared to explore stuff on our own. Why would I want JSU to move up to FBS just to see them play the same teams they play now.

You may as well stay at the FCS level or drop to D2 and reduce spending playing the same teams. This is one difference in PWCs and 99% of the HBCU's. PWCs are going to do what is best for them. HBCU's always trying to drag 3rd cousin twice removed from the family with them. We need to cut that crap out. Do what is best for your school and stop making plans for the other 9. Their plans is their job.

I'm just going to say it .... NO HBCU TODAY as I am breathing can make this jump BY THEMSELVES. That's the reason why.

Plus, if you go by yourself, you have to have somewhere to go first .... who is looking to bring Jackson State on? You're in C-USA's footprint and the Sun Belt, but neither of them NEED you.

One more thing .... what makes us so different? Several schools have moved up into another conference at one time. While some of our schools might be able to survive for a while, we have to look at our fanbase. We don't get GREAT crowds when we play PWC OOC games now .... what do you think would happen if you have no HBCU's on your schedule?

Ask Tennessee State? If those three of four games were taken off, who would come to Memphis or Nashville? They know it. You do too.

The Sun Belt could-they don't have a team in Jackson State's region.

Tory & FIU are the big dogs in football
North Texas & Troy are the big dogs in basketball. You already play North Texas in OOC. You can still play some SWAC teams and attract some kids that normally wouldn't look at JSU.

a HIGH SCHOOL did, so that's where they went. Highland Park High School

There are white school districts with better stuff than many of the schools not named TCU, Texas, N Texas, Baylor, TT and Houston.
They do that to attract (STEAL) kids from other school districts (DISD) for thier sport teams. Allen ISD is building a new stadium despite the budget crisis.
They know how to use and raise money properly. That indoor facilty was already PAID for before it opened.
