Bands officially warned to adhere to SWAC gametime policies

Birmingham, Ala. – The Jackson State and Alabama State marching bands have been publicly reprimanded by the Southwestern Athletic Conference for failure to comply with league procedures and policies during SWAC football contests.

The offenses occurred during the Jackson State home game vs. Alabama A&M on Oct. 9, and the Alabama State home contest vs. Texas Southern on Oct. 2.

Conference rules state that: “once the offensive team breaks the huddle and approaches the line of scrimmage, the band shall cease playing.â€￾ By rule, both bands were asked to stop playing at these times by both the referee and the public address announcer.

SWAC rules state that: “on the 2nd offense the violating band will be reprimanded and suspended from performing during their next contest and/or fined an amount to be determined by the Commissioner. On the 3rd offense the violating band will be suspended from performing the remainder of the season. â€￾

Rest of Story

This is one of the most stupid rules the conferance has. Why can I go to other college games and even high school games and the bands play all the time with no warnings from the refs. Only in the swac do they pump up the fans by advertising about the bands being at the games and then reprimand them for actually playing at the games.

Dude Fiyah, you are so much better than this. Why would you even ask a question you already know the answer to? And you know damn well this is not a conference rule. IT IS A NCAA RULE that SWAC bands simply ignore!

Damn man!

SWAC bands are the only bands that even TRY to adhere to that dumb arse rule...lol

No they are not. It's just that SWAC band directors are too freakin lazy to instruct their band members any other way. You band people are not this dayum clueless. Some of you are just arguing this point because you feel the need to uphold some sort of band code. "Defend the band at all cost"

Sad part about anything of this is that this is not even an SWAC rule. It is a NCAA rule.

But you all continue to play dumb to the facts.

I do agree that Band directors and drum majors need to pay more attention to the game. Its no sense for their to be 10 drum majors and all those band directors if they cant control the band. I love hearing the band, but dont hurt the football team bc they are not paying attention.

The Swac is the only conferance that will stop play to warn the bands not to play during the game. Even if it's a section just playing a quick fanfare.

Show us where any other conferance does this with the bands?

Like I said earlier, I've attended several other college and high school games where the bands played the entire game without incident.

But this is a never ending argument....just like when the Swac came out with those other band policies a few yeas ago.

I'm not about to argue with folk who are clearly ignorant to what other conferences bands DO at games... They play when the hell they want.... SU for the longest been the band in the SWAC to really pay attention and adhere to this dumb rule that may be an NCAA rule that only the SWAC enforces...

They had several rules against black folks.. and just like this one.. it's bull shyt!

First off, don't even bring high schools into the discussion. That shit is moot.

Secondly, show me a college conference (outside of the HBCU ranks) where bands play anytime they want. I said this because those dumb asses in the other HBCU conferences do this too.

The only surprise here is it's only JSU and Bamma State?
EVERY Band in the SWAC plays while the ball is in play.

Southern had to be told at least three times to be quiet. The boom didn't play hardly any during the 3rd and 4th QTR. Southern was just playing. Two weeks and no reprimand...LOL

I have not heard any college bands outside of BCF play constantly during PLAY. Bands in the SEC, Big 12, etc will play quick hitters between plays and during timeouts, but not when their team is in the huddle between plays or the QB is under center.

Oh... and this is in the NCAA rulebook.

The reason why other school bands play because they have a song for each down or big play....

Again.. it's a bullshyt rule.... Who tells the crowd at football games to hush when the teams are in the huddle... The crowds at SEC games are much louder than any one band...

It's a rule and that dumb shyt need to be challenged..

College do everything else like the pros... they may as well get ready for the big stage... ask any team that comes to the Superdome... Deal with it.. it's all part of the game.

If anyone says "Noise" is not part of the game... Get you a decible reader and hold in to these large crowd screaming than to a band... than you will see how assinine this rule it..

Hell them FN blow horns are more annoying than anything... that's in the rule book to.. tell them to enforce that..

People it's the rule that spans all NCAA football no matter what level you on. Either play by the rule or cost your team and it is as simple as that. The problem with HBCU bands is the fact that they actually think gameday is put on for them and not the football team. Nobody is telling bands they can't play but use some common sense.

I know if JSU get penalized Saturday because the band is playing while the ball is in play after they been warned, they gonna get cussed the fugg out and they know it. People can talk all that trash on these message boards about they don't GAS all they want but that is the truth.

The band is artificial noise. Crowd is natural and do whatever they want. There is a difference.

This post is proof that you did not bother to read the link that J4L posted. So let me try to educate some of you...AGAIN.

From the NCAA rule book

b. Other prohibited acts include:
1. During the game, coaches, substitutes and authorized attendants in
the team area shall not be on the field of play or outside the 25-yard
lines without permission from the referee unless legally entering or
leaving the field (Exceptions: Rules 1-2-4-g and 3-3-8-c).
2. Team area personnel who are outside the team area and who have
involvement or impact on live-ball play are subject to penalty under
Rule 9-1-5-a.
3. No disqualified person shall enter the field of play or end zones.
4. No person or mascot subject to the rules, except players, officials and
eligible substitutes, shall be on the field of play or end zones during
any period without permission from the referee. If a player is injured,
attendants may come inbounds to attend him, but they must obtain
recognition from an official.
5. No substitute(s) may enter the field of play or end zones for purposes
other than replacing a player(s) or to fill a player vacancy(ies). This
includes demonstrations after any play (A.R. 9-2-1-I).
6. Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any
noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals
(Rule 1-1-6).

The rule is really simple. When the QB is under center or calling signals the bands need to STFU!

The CIAA is notorious for stopping the bands from playing and penalizing teams. The SIAC has even asked a couple of bands to bring the volume down this year. So it's not just the SWAC. We always wants to emulate the PWCs so why is it that we can't do like the majority of them and bring down the volume when the teams approach the line?

MEAC OH, you did say outside of the HBCUs, huh? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! SEC then. I see and hear that dayum Bengal band playing "Neck" alot of times.

The key is "PERSONS SUBJECT TO THE RULES."

Persons Subject to the Rules

ARTICLE 6.
a. All persons in the team area are subject to the rules and are
governed by the decisions of the officials.

b. All players, substitutes, replaced players, coaches, trainers, cheerleaders
in uniform, band members in uniform, mascots in uniform, commercial
mascots, public-address announcers, audio and video system operators,
and other persons affiliated with the teams or institutions are subject to
the rules and are governed by the decisions of the officials.
