I heard this informercial late last night:

"Have you long wanted to be like your idol? Have you thought to yourself, "How can I get to the next level?". Well, your opportunity has come to re-invent yourself just like the Sonic Boom of the South. This poster child of makeovers has attempted to prove themselves relevant in the band world by shrewdly altering their sound through shifting the balance of low brass from trombones to baritones, discovering an f-horn section, and re-arranging tunes to emulate their master, Southern University. Now that UAPB has been dealt with and Valley declined to spend their travel budget on a trip to the slaughterhouse, it is J-Stank Week.

I wonder what they call it when you try to imitate someone and end up imitating something else..

like trying to imitate SU and end up imitating a HS that wants to be like SU?...

LOL!!! Man this is a perfect example of what we been saying for years. Thanks troop for pointing this out.
 
Funny thing is, SU's style is so easy to copy that anybody can do it. The Neck version that JSU played in 1995 better not be touched by SU. That would be comedy. SU STILL can't play anything with a melody even tho they have added more woodwinds in an attempt to sound like JSU. Let SU try something like Cantaloop. :lol:

So you're basically admitting that JSU is copying SU's style. Thanks for admitting that. You are the only honest JSUe poster on here. Where is Crit and Southsuburbs to cosign you?

Nah, that is the result of having to have girls in the band and the fact Doc is gone meaning even more girls......lol. We still don't have that many woodwinds. I have to admit. Those piccolos SU got are blowing. LOL.

Still waiting on someone from JStank to respond to the original message of the thread. Crit you respond to everything else. Go ahead and tell us why yall play neck different. Btw don't close the thread just yet, we know you get mouse happy when someone points of the obvious of the Stank.

But to answer your burning question, I can't respond to the original message of thread, because I can't view the videos at work (it's blocked). When I get home and if I feel like it, I might view them and respond. But if I don't respond back, it's my choice. :)

I'm not going to go back and forth with ya'll SUcks folks about why or how the Boom's sound may or may not have changed. And quite personally, I don't care if the Boom doesn't sound like that they did compared to now versus years ago. I wouldn't expect them to sound the exact considering it's been under different leadership. All I care about is that they've MAINTAINED a solid sound, and they have. Now if SUcks is able to hold their traditional sound for 60+ years through today, good for ya'll! What you want? A cookie? Yaaayyy for Sucks!!!! :)

I'm looking forward to seeing BOTH bands on Saturday. :tup:

I see hardly anything about JSU's "style" that is like SU. JSU's sound has changed over the years but I don't think it was to sound like SU. People who say that don't realize that we had VOLUME in the 80's and early mid 90's. Some staff changes and more influence from the SU dude who is now as Norfolk took the volume down around around 1996 or 1997. We got rid of him and brought the volume back. We sounded different in the 80s than we did in the 70's and different in the 90's than we did in the 80's. As have the J-Settes changed each decade. As music evolves, so does the BOOM. Ain't like SU is the same either.

Yep, them gals are blowing. Of course SU don't have 30 of them like I am sure JSU probably has. If it was left up to me......we would have the same instrumentation that I marched with. But hey, yall woodwinds are good for something.:D

I could really dissect this post but just don't feel like getting into with ya TP. You have no clue on why things changed over the years. But oh well. Certainly Paul Adams didn't take JSU sound down. Far from that.

You need to holla at Dowell Taylor one day. He will let you non-band JSU folks know the deal.

How can Dowell know what happened in 1999. When that dude went to NSU, things got better....PERIOD! They went back to the early to mid-90's sound.

Uh TP. He is still around and he knows what is going on. You act like the dude left Jackson and went somewhere else. Paul Adams didn't hurt JSU's sound. You obviously have no clue about how good he was at JSU and when he was at SU in the 70s.

TP don't know. He is grasping for straws. He also don't realize not having power can be more than the arrangements/arrangers. It could be that you just got a bad bunch of musicians who can't push that sound through. He also has not taken noticed of JSU's intrumentation. When you start marching 50 plus trumpets or so every year......you should increase your power. I think one year they had damn near 60.
