Jerry Jones: Cowboys made right choice drafting Felix Jones over Chris Johnson

Rewind the clock.

Cowboys fans…remember back just a couple of years ago to the 2008 NFL Draft.

Remember the excitement that swept the city when the Cowboys selected Arkansas running back Felix Jones with the 22nd overall pick in the first round?

But, while you were celebrating the “steal of the draft,” you might have missed the name announced to come off the board two picks later.

“And with the 24th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft…the Tennessee Titans select Chris Johnson, running back, East Carolina.”

Fast-forward two and a half years and Chris Johnson is the defending NFL rushing champion and the Cowboys are struggling to find five touches for Jones a game.

But, ask Dallas Cowboys Owner/General Manager Jerry Jones and he still thinks that he made the right choice.

Rest story

For a team struggling to find a presence in their running game, the selection of Jones over Johnson could go down as one of the biggest mistakes in Cowboys history.

At least according to everyone but Jerry Jones.
Lie and deny it! Make everyone else seem crazy, except you. :uhoh:

Marshawn Lynch traded to Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks have pulled off quite the coup. FOXSports.com has learned that the Seahawks have reached a trade with the Buffalo Bills for former first-round pick running back Marshawn Lynch.

The Seahawks give up a fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft and a conditional latter-round pick in 2012. There were several teams linked to wanting to acquire Lynch, among them the Packers and the Eagles. The Seahawks tried prior to April’s NFL draft to acquire the former Cal running back. Up until this point, the Bills had held firm against all suitors, but Seattle finally got them to make a move.

Lynch has 2,765 career rushing yards with 17 TDs on the ground. Lynch's numbers declined after a breakout rookie year in 2007, when he rushed for 1,115 yards.

Rest story

It wasn't a mistake at the time given the information everyone had.

Johnson has simply developed into a better NFL player. That's all.

THE END

Last I checked...hindsight is 20/20 than a mofo, anyway. So, in that...there's nothing to "admit", really.

Dont know about that SUFan. I mean, I watched Chris Jones at E. Carolina and watched Felix at Arkansas and I wasnt impressed with Felix. Seriously. Outside of Jerry Jones infactuation over his old school, I think Felix should have been a 4th round draft pick if that.

You are right... the Razorbacks were on national TV a lot more than East Carolina. People remember McFadden and Jones killing teams with that Wildcat and the long runs they were making (and I pride myself at watching a lot of college football at all levels on TV. Thats why I remember Pierre Garcon from Mount Union because of their dominance of D-III)...

I can barely remember Chris Johnson outside of that bowl game he went off in so at the time Jones might have been the more logical choice... Johnson was just determined to prove his doubters wrong and has become an elite player... still, until they get another quality RB to compliment him, he'll just end up being another RB who by the time he reaches 30 will be average 3 yards a rush...

You've got to be joking.

Felix Jones and Darren McFadden formed one of the best running back duos college football has ever seen. Rivaling the Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams Auburn duo and the current duo of Trent Richardson and Mark Ingram at Alabama. Chris Johnson may have been good at East Carolina, but folks would have been hard pressed to pick him over Felix Jones that year.

You must be a scout because I have never seen East Carolina on TV. That maybe because I don't watch football on Thursday night or after mid-night.

You must be thinking of another player at Arkansas.

I'm not talking about duos here SUfan. Felix Jones (himself) didnt impress me. With McFadden, yeah just like Bush and White. But when you see them by themselves and teams can "gameplan" for them, it's a different story. It's hard to gameplan for two different backs with two different running styles, cause you just may need a different personnel package in there. Chris Johnson was the East Carolina team. That dude reminded me of Barry Sanders at Oklahoma St as far as carrying the team.

Naw, some stations here in ATL picked up a few of their games. I would watch them, cause I kept hearing his name being bounced around.

I saw Chris Johnson play in college and I live nowhere near Carolina. Some of their games were on ESPN 2 right in the middle of the day.

I don't know where some of y'all were but I saw Chris play on T.V. many times while he was in college. I remember when he beat Boise St in a bowl game by himself and had over 400 yards all purpose on a Boise defense that held Adrian Peterson to under 100 yards the year before. Top that off with the fact at the combine he ran the 2nd fastest 40 time ever and was off the charts in other tests as well at the combine. Sounds like a big mistake to me.

I agree. Felix Jones played in a "gadget" offense at Arkansas with all that crazy wildcat and wide open shat under Houston Nutt. I wonder if he ever ran a toss play or had to run in between the tackles out of the I while at Arkansas. I wouldn't call it a mistake not drafting Chris Johnson because you never know what might happen with a RB trying to turn his game "pro" but I do call it a mistake drafting Felix Jones as high as they did. He's just another bad draft pick by Jerry Jones.

McFadden was the wildcat guy at Arkansas, while Jones was the traditional RB more often than not.

People also tend to forget that those years with McFadden and Jones that OL was something serious. Jones was the more traditional RB like jag4life said but in college Chris Johnson was getting it done on special teams, running the ball, and catching the ball. He was the more complete back.

Man, ain't nobody watching no da*n East Carolina (or, C-USA) like that...

I watch all kinds of football, and I only knew of him cuz they're in the same conference with UofH...so, I just so happen to catch one or two of his games.

Lets be real here. Chris Johnson didn't get his real shine til the combine, via his 40 time. By then, when it comes to reputations that proceed players...it's too late. Most of those owners and GM's already have a good idea who they're going with by then. And, they ain't picking up nobody just because they raised some eyebrows doing a 40. Might get more attention than initially...but, actually picking them...smh.

Please believe folks were watching Chris in college. His rep came during his senior year when he had almost 3,000 yards all purpose. Conference USA or not that's impressive.Again he torched the same Boise St defense that held AP to about 80 yards. If nobody was watching he wouldn't have been a 1st round pick.
