Texas Southern’s Football Summer Practice Begins August 9th

Houston, TX- Texas Southern is set to begin their journey toward a 2010 SWAC Football Championship. Summer practices start on Monday, August 9th. The Tigers return 15 starters including All-American wide receiver and return specialist William Osborne who missed the 2009 season because of an injury. All-SWAC quarterback Arvell Nelson is back for his senior year after completing 212 passes for 2392 yards and 12 touchdowns. Joseph Anderson was his favorite target in 2009. Anderson caught 51 passes from 554 yards and seven touchdowns including the TD pass that beat Southern in the closing seconds of that game. Martin Gilbert, Marcus Wright and Joseph Warren will be in the backfield. All-American and All-SWAC offensive lineman Charles Smith will anchor the O-line with Skylar Trimple.

The Tiger’s #1 ranked defense will be led by All-SWAC linebacker Dejuan Fulghum who had 88 tackles, 20 TFL for 83 yards and eight sacks for 50 yards. Fulghum will be joined by veterans Shomari Clemons at linebacker, Kydarian Wilkings and DeMarkus Washington at corner, Daryl Glasper at free safety and Curtis Thomas at strong safety. Thomas had six interceptions for 101 yards and two touchdowns last season. The defensive line will be anchored by Rolando Melancon and Tim Benford.

Summer football practices will be held on campus and are open to the public. The schedule is below. I have also attached an information package to this email which has the 2010 schedule, the 2010 outlook, an updated roster and other team information.

TXSU's offensive side of the ball looks pretty darn good. I see QB Nelson is returning. I was hoping he was would have graduated and moved on. Sigh! :( Hopefully the Golden Lions can run through him.

DCG, not being a hater, but "The Tigers #1 ranked defense"..........I thought that title belonged to...........

TSU is god awfully physically talented, IMO. Arguably the most physically gifted team in the SWAC, IMO. However lol... I saw let-downs from the players (physicality) and coaching blunders over the last few years. THAT's what holds them from being SWAC football champions, IMO.

They'll have the best WR tandems in the SWAC this fall. No one else will come close. :tup:

Solomon: Cole driving TSU on road to relevancy

His is a typical football coach's office. Awards and plaques all over the place. Photos of former players, like Texans wideout Jacoby Jones, on the wall. And of course, all the standard equipment for watching game highlights.

In the corner, to the right of Johnnie Cole's large desk at Texas Southern University, there is a bookshelf stocked with helmets from the stops along his college coaching career.

The headgear comes in an assortment of colors, a mixed bag of logo designs and school names spanning the alphabet from A to T (Alabama State to Tennessee State). Whether it was with the Jaguars, Tigers or Dragons, Cole has been successful at each stop along his coaching journey.

As he enters his third season at TSU with an overall losing record (10-13), Cole is working on a new success. Turning around a program takes time, and although TSU hasn't turned, it is turning with Cole, a former TSU quarterback, at the wheel.

Cole has been on the positive end of enough resurrection projects that he needs a cool nickname like "Jumpstart 'em Johnnie."
