Design shows BJCC dome to hold atleast 70,000

if the SCG is gone...what need will it serve us? 70K seats means you better get an Alabama or Auburn game once every year and bid on everything from disney on ice to high school playoffs since there's no NFL team

Maybe B'ham is attempting something that you or me probably don't know about. Obviously it would be kind of silly to build this dome only for ASU/AAMU. If the NFL is trying to get a new team maybe the city think they can lure them. I am waiting to see how this one will work out. UA/AU don't care to play there. This dome looks as if it would only be full two times out of the year.--MCC and a bowl game. I'm for it, because B'ham need change in downtown. I hope this doesn't be a waist of tax payers money. I know they want to get more big time college tournaments, but depending on the basketball teams that show up, it's a gamble.

I wonder also...San Antonio has a dome that leads to nowhere but it did host an NBA team at one point, the Saints for a year, Cowboys training camp and is in the mix for high school playoffs...with SA being a convention city it survives...

for the dome in Bham to be viable, it has to model San Antonio at worse.......

San Antonio is an attractive city and has the Spurs and the River Walk. Nobody wants to go to Birmingham, and a dome ain't gonna make any difference. It's biggest event will be the annual horse and hog show.

Well, for ONE, hopefully they could attract the SEC championship back to Bham so the ACC can have the Georgia Dome. Bham is moreso in the SEC's footprint while the ATL is in the ACC's footprint. The ACC Championship will be in Charlotte this year and it's probably gonna be cold as heck! I nearly froze to death in Tampa last year.

This "Dome" is a multi-use convention center, just like in San Antonio and in St Louis. The main purpose has never been to attract NFL - NFL aint coming - neither will Alabama or Auburn so football has never been the focal point of this facility. But with it being built and being able to house football if needed - then it only makes sense to build it house at least 70k. But this will be able to configure to house multiple conventions at the same time - plus with the additional hotel rooms being created in the community it puts Birmingham back in the competion to gain conventions that would come here but we cant accomodate due to lack of space and rooms.

They should easily be able to get a preseason NFL game and they might even get better bowl game bids.

The SEC's office has said it has no interest in returning to B'Ham even if a dome is built. It views Atlanta as a more dynamic city to hold its's events.

Furthermore, SEC schools complained about the advantage the Alabama schools had at Legion Field. Presumably, the same sentiments still exists.

Things can change. We just need to pray about it. :D

Also, Both Auburn and Alabama are within a three hour drive of ATL ...and it ain't like Auburn and Alabama grads are not all over Georgia, South Carolina and TN. Being in ATL is not taking advantage away from everyone else. Hell, move that schitt to Louisiana. :D

Florida, under Spurrier, was the main instigator of the move. It's not going to change, now, especially since Alabama has started to dominate again. It is not about distance; it is about an atmosphere in the city that is perceived to favor Alabama because of its long history of playing games there.

who is "nobody"? Lewis? lol.

sounds like you just dont want Bham to come up and have a dome...

and that "annual horse and hog show" comment was a failed attempt at sarcasm LOL

University of Pheonex has that big retractable dome football stadium and they don't have any sports. Most of their student body is online yet they host big college FBS bowl games and the superbowl. Build it and somebody will come and find a use for it.

It shocked me when Oklahoma City got a NBA team. If anything should have happened, that team should have been in B'ham. I'm not saying that B'ham don't deserve an NFL team, but they definitely should have tried for that NBA team that went to Oklahoma. Maybe the BJCC or city will put a picture out there soon to let people see what the dome looks like. Even if it's suppose to be a multi-purpose facility, other than the two possible football games that I mentioned earlier, I can't see another event coming to the dome that will draw over 20,000 people. Like yall said earlier, if the city could draw a pre-season NFL game, that could be the only other event where the dome could be filled to capacity.

The University of Phoenix does not own that stadium. It simply acquired the naming rights like other corporations do. Further, you can't compare Phoenix to Birmingham. Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the U.S., a center for corporations and is already a destination city for large scale sporting events.

UAB football games would also be at the stadium also Labor Day Classic (which outdrew the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.... Plain and simple a facility needs to be built because Legion Field WONT make it long. What do people want Bham to do.. wait till Legion Field falls down them get a plan?

LOL...I understand this is confusing becasue it's named after a university but that is the Arizona Cardinals Stadium. Lincoln Financial Bank is on the Philadelphia Eagles Stadium but the bank doesn't have any sports either...

as far as an NFL team... it would be successful in Birmingham... every football team Birmingham has had, has been successful as far as attendance... Birmingham led the World League in attendance and the Birmingham Stallions never had a problem with attendance. Birmingham led the AF2 in attendance also. This is a football state.... as long s they dont have to compete with Bama or Auburn for the same day, I believe every game would be a sellout in ai 70k stadium. You have two colleges 3 hours apart that average around 190K combined.... put a team in Birmingahm attendance wont be a factor.
