"Put that on god"

Go PB!!
Am I over-reacting? What would you do ...Nothing?

My students have a habit of swearing on god. It bugs me to no end. I had not heard it before coming to this town.

Student 1: I own a BMW.
Student 2: Put that on god.
Student 1: On god I have a BMW.

Should I say nothing?

I have never heard such an expression. Make it old-school English for me.

Unfortunately, most times I don't. Some I have told and given scripture. I take that back...I have told them...I do not persist or force them...But I am sure I have told every class collectively. I wait until I just can't take hearing it anymore.
I wonder how or why that got started here. Has anyone heard it?
 
First of all, which god are they referring too? Folks take for granted that people who say, "god this" or "god that" are always referring to the biblical god.
If they were talking about the Hindu or Muslim god, would it matter as much to you if they used their god's name in vain? Would you correct them for that? I highly doubt it.

Also, it's called freedom of speech.

I feel the same as you. If anyone has ever been involved as a witness in a courtcase, when you put that hand on the bible and answer to "Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?", you just did the same thing, in so many words.

You are correct. That is why I do not do that when testifying in court.

Hell YES!!! Look at Hitler, Mussolini, the Spanish Inquisition, American history before the Constitution.
Nothing good ever comes of it when religion is combined with the state.

If this ever happens, our first ammendment rights are history.

No they should not be. The constitution did not intend for them to be. The constitution was designed not to have the state have an official religion or support one religion over another.

What are you talking about? Some persons are in such a hurry to be defensive, become offensive, and anticipate answers that they do not read. Read again and then tell me what you are talking about.

To answer your question, yes. If the Muslims can blow you away for not believing, I have no trouble commenting. Note that those comments are to others who claim or were raised to be christians.
