The remaining Big 12 members are close to a remarkable comeback that will ensure the conference's viability of 10 members a source familiar with the negotiations told The Dallas Morning News.

Several small details need to be ironed out, but the framework of an agreement appeared to be in place Monday afternoon.

Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott confirmed that the University of Texas has declined an invitation to join the conference. The decision will preserve the Big 12 as a 10-team conference, assuming Texas A&M elects to remain. Texas A&M officials were deliberating Monday afternoon.

In a brief phone conversation, Scott said: "We've been informed by University of Texas president Bill Powers that Texas will stay with the Big 12. We have not received definitive details about this decision. It is our understanding that Texas was going to meet the terms that we have proposed."

The TV dollars were also enough to convince Texas A&M to stay with the conference. The Aggies had been pursuing a bid to the Southeastern Conference.

Under Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe's plan, Texas would see a sharp increase in revenue under a new cable TV right deal with Fox Sports. Because of the Big 12's revenue sharing formula, Texas would probably make more than the $17 million average, perhaps close to $20 million. The Longhorns would also be allowed to form their own network, something that would not be allowed in the Pac-10.

A source said the network could eventually produce up to $5 million in revenue based on projections, which would likely bring Texas more money than a move to the Pac-10.

Another reason the conference remained intact was team travel, especially without the possibility of Texas A&M, despite the Pac-10's hope to focus on divisional travel and avoid numerous distant road trips to the Northwest.

Texas punked them all and is getting their way.........

But the only thing about this is that all these numbers are only projections. What happens when these projections are not met?

The only conference that has solid numbers is the Big Ten and their numbers are about to increase.

This will slow down the domino effect in the mean time......

I was hoping for the Super Conferences so we can get a real FBS playoff system.

Those other 9 members of the Big 12 are dumb as hell to let UT make a fool out of them like this. This is the real reason Tom Osbourne and Nebraska got the hell out of dodge. The Big 12 is the only conference that let's one member mucked the entire conference with a straight face. I can't believe Oklahoma goes for this mess too. They have just as much history and fan base as Texas. This is a damn shame. It will be funny if Texas A&M still goes to the SEC. I think their leadership is about tired of UT also.

A&M had a chance to break away...but the "shadow talk" will continue

Someone at UT realized outside of football they were about to experience a rude awakening...they would have to play UCLA, Stanford, etc. in all those other spring sports where they dominate every year...

I struggle to watch the Big 10 network or the Mountain West network unless there's a marquee football...a UT network will be harder to watch unless there's an HBCU match-up...

Outside of A&M, the other 8 schools depend totally on UT or Oklahoma's existence totally...take them out the Big 12...they're truly regional schools at best.....

Every conference have their major schools that really carries the weight of the entire conference nationally. But none of those conferences, outside of the Big 12, let those schools make a complete azz out of them like this. Those other 9 Big 12 schools are pretty much admitting they are inferior too UT. This is freaking humiliating.

they are..Baylor, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kansas State, etc....they are Tier 2 football programs as UT, A&M and OU are the top dogs.....Baylor was on the verge of disaster if UT left them as those "projected" losses Waco would receive totaled millions because of less travel from A&M, UT, etc.

UT ain't crazy also as they have a cakewalk conference compared to a PAC 16, SEC, etc....

SEC and A&m were serious because of Gene Stallings serving as a regent

Without Texas there is no Big 12. Folks better wake up and realize that.

Texas and Oklahoma are the top dogs in football but in the other sports they are in the middle of the pack.

TAMU should say screw them and go to the SEC anyway. I bet if that happened UT would be back to stage 1.

Texas has had a great baseball team for several years, a consistently solid basketball and softball units, and I believe their swimming team over the years has been very competitive along with track and field. In fact, the Longhorn baseball and football team won the national title in 2005. And the baseball team played in the CWS national championship game last year.

Texas has a great athletic department. I don't know too much about the Sooners.

Was part of this deal that the conference is renamed "The Longhorn Conference"? Talk about bending over nine others and making them call you "daddy". Funny how a month ago Missouri was talking about how they disliked the "Texification" of the Big 12, and they wanted out. Now that they have no option to leave, they just get back in line and grab their ankles like everyone else.

Surprised Oklahoma would get played like this too. The SEC would take them in a second if they said they want in. No more having to deal with trying to please Texas, and a equal share of television money.

OU probaby saw that SEC schedule and realized a 10-team Big 12 is way easier to the national title game than playing LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, etc. on a consistent basis...

Tech with gimmick offense, Kansas (inconsistent), Baylor (:emlaugh:), Kansas State (Inconsistent), Iowa State (:emlaugh:)..Oklahoma State (Gunday :emlaugh:)....win that and you got a BCS bid...please

Yeah, TAMU definitely needs to go to the SEC if they have the option. They will always be backseat to UT as long as they stay in the Big 12.

Texas is still getting the better of this deal.

Texas A&M needs to get some balls like Nebraska did and do what is best for them.

Texas A&M is not the marketing giant that Texas is but you all have to understand that TAMU has "BIG MONEY" too..... Dont give Texas too much credit for this.... This was also about TAMU and Arkansas..... Arkansas was it TAMU's ear telling them of SEC riches and a whole new recruiting base.... TAMU pulled a power play on Texas.

TAMU told Texas that either we stay together in a new BIG12/BIG10 or if you go to the PAC10, we go to the SEC without you... Also TAMU was gonna stick Texas with Little Brother's Baylor and Texas Tech....

Another side is that Texas an Co. needs to swallow thier pride and Call TCU an Houston to join anew Big 12 in the near future

Also it is not a good thing to be in different conferences. That means that both teams would have to waist a non conference home game every other year to play each other. So it worked out..

Some insiders are saying that the "rumor of the hour" is that Air Force Academy and BYU have been extended an invite to the Big XII.

I don't see it.

Not Air Force-why would you bring them in? That would bring donw the conference.

BYU-they are a step up from what left the Big 12. They hold thier own in football and basketball. I just don't see them leaving the MWC. They are what the 3rd best team in that conference. Come to the Big 12 and they might be 7-10th best.

BYU comes in after Nebraska is gone, and they become the best football team in the North Division. Really don't see how Air Force would add anything to the conference, to be completely honest.

Also, there's NO WAY Baylor was going to get into the Pac 10. Ever. After A&M said they were looking to the SEC, Utah and Kansas suddenly became the names linked to the final 16 Pac spot. Baylor brings nothing to the table for the 16 Pac. They don't bring anything to the table for the Big 12 either, but then again, neither does Texas Tech, Iowa State or Kansas State.

These other schools are ok with this because without Texas they get millions less annually.

I can see BYU in the Big 12 but they need to add TCU before Air Force.

Arkansas needs to join the Big 12.

Arkansas / Texas A&M at Cowboy stadium for the next 29 years.

Arkansas / UT

Arkansas / OU

all of these three games are better than any rivalry matchup that Arkansas can get out of the SEC.

Why would Arkansas join a conference that didn't want them for less money than they get in the SEC? Of course, this just opened up Utah's spot in the Pac-10.

I am leaning toward what is said here. Understand. The Texas-Texas A&M game is big business in Texas. It is more than just another big football game. If Texas went to the Pac-10 and A&M to the SEC, the game was in trouble. I think that in part TAMU's "interest" in the SEC is partly responsible for the Big 12 (-2) staying together.

True, TAMU is not the marketing giant that UT is. However, as you said they do have big money at the school in Brazos County (Bryan/College Station), Texas. There was a time that Texas A&M football was better than Texas. When that happens and it can again happen, Texas A&M will make even more money than it is now-which is a lot.

Now this leaves the Pac-10 to try and get Utah. That would leave BYU for the Big 12. I think they want Air Force because of it being in Colorado.

I agree...but I still think that the SEC should add BAYLOR and TxA&M. Both schools would benefit from the SEC exposure and the SEC would benefit from the Houston and Dallas area market. I know some question Baylor, but other than football their other programs are playing very well and I think their football will be on the come up with Briles. Arkansas and LSU would benefit in creating a rivalry with those two schools, imo.
