What tax bracket am i in?

In the other thread there was some confusion about which tax bracket folks were in and how to find that information. To help my fellow TSPN'ers I started a thread all about taxes...

The Federal income tax is referred to as a “progressive tax.” Of course, it’s not progressive in the same way that a social movement could be said to be progressive. What the term means in this case is that, as your taxable income increases, so does the rate at which you are taxed.

People will often make statements such as “I’m in the 25% tax bracket.” For example, a single person with a taxable income of $40,000 would be in the 25% tax bracket. People frequently misunderstand this to mean that all of the person’s income is taxed at a rate of 25%. In reality, the person’s overall tax rate will be much lower.

EXAMPLE: Samantha’s 2009 taxable income is $40,000. This puts her in the 25% tax bracket. If that meant that all of her income was taxed at 25%, she would be paying $10,000 in income taxes. Instead, she’ll be paying much less. Samantha will actually end up paying $6,187.50 calculated as follows:
1) Her first $8,350 of taxable income is taxed at 10%. ($835 in tax)
2) From $8,350 to $33,950 she’s taxed at 15%. ($3,840 in tax)
3) From $33,950 to $40,000 Sam is taxed at 25%. ($1,512.50 in tax)
4) $835 + $3,840 + $1,512.50 = $6,187.50

But my neighbor said...

Another example:

Suppose your taxable income (after deductions and exemptions) was exactly $100,000 in 2008 and your status was Married filing separately; then your tax would be calculated like this:

( $ 8,025 minus 0 ) x .10 : $ 802.50
( 32,550 minus 8,025 ) x .15 : 3,678.75
( 65,725 minus 32,550 ) x .25 : 8,293.75
( 100,000 minus 65,725 ) x .28 : 9,597.00
Total: $ 22,372.00
This puts you in the 28% tax bracket, since that's the highest rate applied to any of your income; but as a percentage of the whole $100,000, your tax is about 22.37%

Sounds to me like someones employers is taking too much out of someones check and running off with it.

And why is it that people think that they'll really see the money they don't pay in taxes. If the government all of a sudden drastically lowered taxes for everyone either companies would proportionately reduce your pay or increase the cost of their goods. You can't seriously believe they are going to let that money sit in your pocket. Just think what you would do if you owned a business.

Employers have nothing to do with what is deducted for medi, state, Fed and social... Quit being ignorant dude..

And Toi...

I was talking about Total income before deductions...

Meaning I got the percentage from subtracting the deductions from the total gross income... I said nothing more or less than that..

Do you understand how tax withholdings work?

Do you pay taxes?

My employer don't control what the State take out.. nor do they control what the Fed take out... nor do they for medicare or social security...

Are you serious dude?....:retard:

there is no way you are just looking at FED, SOC, MEDI tax and getting that amount. I have run the numbers, I suspect my income is close to yours(don't know) those 3 things don't even equal 20% of my income.

Better. I own a business so I know exactly what your employer does. I'm assuming you are still in Louisiana. If so then you most likely filled out an L4 when you were hired. If you didn't....well here you can read for yourself what your employer does.

http://www.toolkit.com/tools/bt.aspx?tid=louisianaforml-4_m

So if somebody is taken 62%, 35% or whatever figure you came up with and its higher than whats listed for federal and state income taxes then YOU are the one that requested that much be deducted from your check. If you don't get it back when you file then you the fool... :noidea:

I listed 4 deductions..

How are the numbers not adding up? When I gave an example of what I make verses what was taken out?

if you missed it... if uncle sam take 30k from your 90k what percentage is that?

Maybe you don't make close to what I make ...~shrugs~

Thank You!

How in the hell MY employer can control what I CHOOSE to be deducted?

I basically choose the option "0" dependants...

My employer has nothing to do with that.... SO what point are you making?

I know how to go into the system and change it... But like i said I ain't got time for uncle sam to be sneaking behind me..

Ok so Fed, Med, Soc(these are Uncle SAM taxes) State taxes are not.

$30000 from that $90000 is that's about 34%, You saying whatever state you in taking about 12-15% of your pay on top of the FEDS, because the feds are not taxing you at 34%. I put money on that.(if your income is 90,000)

You pay to the government exactly what that chart up top there says you pay. Your employer withholds what you tell them to withhold and then pays it to the government. So either the government has your money and you didn't properly file your taxes to get it back or your employer has your money and you will never get it back.

Dude I don't work for BoJingle & Co. maybe you that's how you operate

Well you not making what I am making is my only conclusion...

I suspect we are very close, you said yourself that you fall between bracket 2 and 3, that means your rate isn't more that 25%. At the most you making $84,000 as a single person. Even if I bump you up to the next bracket, that 28%. Still doesn't equal 34%.
