Child with pre-existing condition

The situation: Erica Mohamed, 31, of Houston, Texas, is separated, and has a 6-year-old son, Jeremiah, with a rare congenital heart disease called Tetralogy of Fallot. He has had three open-heart surgeries already, and will need to have another procedure to remove a stent in early adolescence. Mohamed's job, through which she gets insurance, is not secure. Mohamed's mother, Vera Richardson, wrote to CNN's iReport about the situation.

Mohamed says: She is glad that she will be able to keep her insurance for her son even if she loses her job. "Did I get everything that I thought that I wanted in this bill? No, not at all because I still think we need at least a public option. But at least it's something, at least it's moving forward, and it's going to get more coverage to more people," she said.

Expert says: Effective this year, in six months, children with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied health care, said Karen Davis, president of the Commonwealth Fund, an independent organization that researches health policy issues. By 2014, children will be covered up to 133 percent of the the federal poverty level. For a family of two, the poverty level is $14,570 in the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia.

Health care reform: What happens when

Adult with pre-existing condition

Ira Bennett hasn't sought health insurance for several years because of how disheartened he felt after being denied. The situation: Ira Bennett, 47 and self-employed without insurance, is HIV-positive, and had a heart attack in his early 40s. He estimates his income is about $500 a month from doing yard work and watching a friend's house. Since he couldn't pay for the $70,000 bill for his heart attack treatment, the costs fell to the state and federal government. Paying for his AIDS medications, costing around $2,000 a month, also falls to federal funding through the Ryan White Care Act.

Bennett says: He hasn't sought health insurance for more than five years because of how disheartened he felt after being denied, and reading about others in a similar situation. Ironically, "I can get insurance for my dog, but I cannot get it for me," he said, pointing to his iReport. Now, with the new bill, "I can sleep better knowing that I'll be able to be taken care of, that I'm not a burden of the state, that I can actually pull my weight a little bit," he said.

Expert says: In 2014, Medicaid will cover individuals up to 133 percent of the poverty level, Davis said. The current poverty level for an individual in the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia is $10,830, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Also in 2014, insurance companies will not be able to deny adults with a pre-existing condition coverage or charge them higher premiums. Someone like Bennett might be eligible for Medicaid, or could get insurance through an exchange, a state-based pool established by the reform measure.

Unemployed and uninsured

The situation: When Daniel Boren, 37, was working as a dishwasher at a hotel, he made too little money to afford insurance through his employer, but too much to qualify for Medicaid. He has worked a variety of jobs and been on and off Medicaid, but now he is uninsured, living on food stamps and looking for work. He has hypertension and takes medication for it, but can't afford to see a doctor.

Healthcare Part II

So is that the real reason why people are so angry about the bill passing? People dont want more money taken out of their taxes? I was being a smart ass in the other thread but i really want to know the case.

And what solution do those who oppose it come up with bc doing nothing solves nothing.

Re: Healthcare Part II

The real problem is folks are more concerned about the folks on the low end getting over. When in reality, it is the folks on the higher end who steal and get over more than anyone.

People have always known that. The difference now is it is being put on the forefront and those doing the :whine: are the main people that got the huge tax breaks off the blue collar worker's back.

Greed. Money destroys humanity. The thought of more people being healthy is crazy to people if it requires your help for it to be possible.

The people that hurt the most are the middle class folk....

I don't feel too much for the rich, because I agree.. they only rich because of the hard work of us middle class and blue collar folk.....

I don't feel too much for the poor because... they basically CHOOSE to do nothing with their lives and collect off of the government...

It's us middle class that don't qualify for nothing and get a lot of of money taken from us... I ain't talking about the tax cheats nah....

Thank you for continuing this thread because I didn't check back on the other one and missed my chance to....

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

SUtrp96 knows folk paying 62% tax and asks me why I brought up college when he went to a state and federal funded school??????? The interstates have toll booths??? Man I probably have warrants for my arrest in every state in the south and half of the midwest cuz I aint paid a toll on an interstate YET!

Anyway yes many people have a problem with the thought of their taxes being increased. But I'd take the nearly $1000 crap arse family insurance plan I had from my employer and give it to the government anyday if it meant not having a company try to deny my claims by conveniently losing paperwork (among other tactics) just to add that 1K to their bottom line rather than pay my claim. Again. A companies ONLY goal is to make profit. In the case of insurance its more profitable to take your money and NOT cover you than it is to cover you. It takes no more than a hurricane to see that in action with home insurance. Yet the same government all these people are so afraid of is the only organization that stands up and makes these insurance companies pay these claims. Any plan to cut the middle man insurance company and create risk pools where profit is not taken out gets a  in my book. Thats what I wish they would really have done in this bill instead of the semi crap that we got.

And if we truly are paying 62% tax then the government truly sucks. Denmark has what 50% tax rates and they have completely free health care. We're still paying to go to the doc ON TOP of the taxes.

Problem is, people lump all Black people in the Pookie category even when folks who think they are not Pookie, have neighbors that see them as Pookies, so their neighbors lie to them, because they see them as another Pookie who wouldn't understand anyway.

If it were not a state school you would have been paying more than double the tuition you paid.

YES, YES, YES.....................!

This nation was set up and established to get away from high taxation, and we got fools in our own back yard trying to enslave their own people with monetary enslavement. Think about it. The government is suppose to run America like you would run your immediate family. You know there will be some folks in your family that will refuse to carry their load. You know folks in the family gone beg, steal, borrow, and etc. You also know there may be a handicap person in the family, and that's when the family come together and help the person that can't help his/herself. What about the clown talking bout he aint got this, and he aint got that? A good strong family would encourage him and give him what he "NEEDS", and tell him to work for wht he wants. This is called "TOUGH" love. You want to give it to him.her, however that will only mentally handicap them, and they will never feel the "PRIDE" of doing it themselves. Remember the movie "The Pursuit of Happiness"? You can't help but cry and be inspired by seeing schit like that, and it's just too bad Americans are getting away from being tough, independent, and self-reliant. We use to cast all our burdens on the Lord, now we cast all our burdens on the government.....and we wonder why we in the shape we in!?:shame:

It doesn't matter how much you owe. You'd owe MORE if you weren't there on the tax payers dime. What you owe after you finish has nothing to do with it. You've benefited from taxes just like everybody else.

It's a lot that could have been done...
Open the borders in which citizens can purchase more than the coverage your particular state offers..

Lessen government mandates on doctors so they wouldn't have to charge as much because of EXTRA EXTRA procedures because of the fear of being sued.

Covering pre existing conditions is something I agree with....

I don't agree with making citizens HAVE to purchase what the government DEEMS adequate health care coverage....
