I'll say this and give a tip to all people that record bands. In a parade situation you can't stand 2 feet in front of a band yet alone 2 feet in front of one section of a band and hope to capture the true sound of the band. Lesson #1 is complete.

I was actually out there... It didn't sound nothing like that in person...

Like 99 said when you standing that close to a band when they are marching you will pick up every sylable...

My CB have a clip of them playing Love is the Key and I Decided.... But he taped them further away then that... and it sounded like what you heard in the street...

When you that close it's like you recording every breath you take...

That said... they were playing a lil bit too loose and that will cause that with up close recordings...

And that being said.. "Bookman" know exactly what he was doing.... Many along the parade route were overly please with the S performance and they picked up many recruits...

Sounds like typical SU.

I was there too, and it did sound that bad, but its mardi gras, all people want is music, drinks and beads. I give them kudos for coming. but it did sound bad, and the looked unorganized at times. like they were making things up on the spot. this is from my iphone.

You was probably one of the JSU cats I saw in the Nomtoc with JSU tees on?

I was in front of them for a good bit.. had a Gold SU band jacket on...

and honestly... me hearing them from where I was .. don't reflect with that camcorder right in their face picked up...

I'm not saying it shouldn't have sound better.. because it should... I think most of them were just letting loose and weren't as focused as they usually are during football season.... That don't excuse it.... But in all honesty it wasn't that bad....

Here is what was heard in person...

"Love is the Key"

"I decided"

My thing is this though.. There was No other way to really record the band.. 10 yards away I'd be In front of a Float and the band wouldn't be seen... its hard period to record bands while in a parade.. this is why people standing on the side never capture the full band while playing. everytime and instrument passes up the mic, its all you're gonna hear... I have a number of clips from a distance away and people are still saying "you're too close" .. yeah its True.. but the shew man I want people to see the band too......there were people walking infront of me..

We are all used to hearing bands play from a long distance.. its how they're supposed to be heard... when at a game, we're either, far away from.. Next too. Below, or Above a bands sound... or at least while in Concert formation because you're getting a bit of everything from a nearby location..
the Best way to have had recorded the band that day would have been Sitting on the Float Directly in front of the band..

. there were folks taping closer than i was..lol

Check this clip out

Being up close in that marching band formation has a lil to do with it as well...

my question is why do you record a band from a bad spot and put it on the internet :tdown: thats just not good unless you have bad motives

After listening to the clips, I'll say this about it..

In the quest to get footage of our bands, sometimes we choose to record (then post) clips that don't compliment our bands. Yes, this was the 'S' but it could've been the 'Boom', 'Crat', 'Hunnert', 'Sounds of JJ Evans', 'Ocean' or any other band. 'Up close' footage is usually choppy and distorted. And yes, it certainly exposes any imperfections in the music (or the over-blowing).

The absolute worse clips I've seen in awhile are the ones from the Honda, with the bands blowing at each other under the stands. That's garbage.

This was not a good clip of SUs band, so why share it? Let's share the good clips. I know SU's got plenty.....

Not hating, just stating the facts.

Yall know I call it like I see (hear) it.....

Yep. You are correct homie. Never liked recording standing in front of the band unless it is in concert formation and have some distance. Parade formation you will not hear all the parts. Just the ones you are close too.

Bingo...

Like I said Bookman know what he was doing...

Trust me if SU sounded bad in person.... They would have felt it from the city...

Mardi Gras ain't just Mardi Gras in New Orleans... Just a bad clip..

That's why you can't really be loose in parades.. you never know who is recording you and have "negative" intentions ...

What I don't understand about Bookman is.. dude marched under SU former band members (Big Will's younger brother Lo, Keith Thomas..Eric Jones) and Bookman has tons of GREAT footage of SU.. but we all see which ones he decides to post.... Which is why he RARELY post clips of SU....lol

Playing Devil's Advocate:

Though Book recorded the Jukebox up close and in the front still doesn't excuse the individuals on playing like that. People were playing very sloppy, improvising and should know better when you're in the Southern University Marching Band. Camera's are always on the Jukebox. No excuses, if any other band was recorded sounding like that many of the same people making excuses would be crucifying other bands, so stop all the excuses.
:shame:
