Self-Smacking and/or Criticism.....

:xeye:

Well in that case, ya'll can have these heffas:

In fact, that's pretty much my response to the topic at hand.

Tell the announcers to ANNOUNCE THE BAND and each song being played.
Then STFU so people can hear the music being played on the field.

What? U mean you don't want to know the bio of the band, names of all the members (including their majors) during the show?

.........Nor do I want to hear chanting throughout the dance routine that is 3 beat's behind what is happening on the field.

You ain't lying about that...
I sit in the stands and pray that someone unplugs the mic, or the speakers blow. It doesn't add a thing while taking so much away.

I'll bite. I am far removed from my program, and didn't get to see them much this year or last, except a few videos....But here we go....

1. Sound...color vs power...

2. Marching

3. BOX

1. PV (IN MY OPINION) doesn't sound like the PV of old. The color seems as if it's being replaced by power, which isn't bad. Just isn't what The Storm was built around. Add power TO the color, not replace the color with power.

2. I think this has more to do with song selection and the drill maneuvers itself. But the in your face energy just hasn't quite been there. I think the right song can make it happen.

3. I love what the BOX brings to the band, but it's time for something fresh and (pardon the pun) 'Out Of The Box'. I would almost venture to say give the BOX a hiatus, and pick and choose spots for a drum feature.

Some may not agree, and that's cool. This is coming from someone who really hasn't been around the band up close in a few years.

- I hope Mr. J finally "SEES" that the gimicks have jumped the shark.

- I hope Mr. J finally stops with these nastalgic mid-90's moments in big band match-ups. This ain't 93 or 95, where you were writing the majority of the band-friendly tunes. You have the weapon (Haymer), so unleash it already. You have Doc's seat...now, take it already.

Two EXCELLENT points.

Though some of the gimmicks have worked their way into being "traditional SU" type-things.... They are still gimmicks. They are cheesy.

And..... On the latter, I could not have worded it better.

I was struggling with how to articulate this correctly. You nailed it perfectly.

I, for one, am 100% OVER with the whole "Big Gurls" thing.

I agree...and I'd add to it...

1. Put the 90's energy back into the marching and dance routines.
2. Stop all the recycling. I used to count on PV for new music on the field.
3. Go back to writing the rapid fire drills of the 90's

Every year I see sparks of these things happening but I don't think there's ever a concerted effort to return to the formula.

I know I'm done with the "big white-boy" gimmick also. At first glance, it seems as though it has died, but we just haven't had anyone to fill the role in the past few years I guess.....

Fill the role? We don't need anyone to fill the role, just let the band handle the business. That gimmick mess is for high schools.

I did mean it as in we need to recruit another one. I was speculating that as soon as there is another BWG in the band, he too will be put out there to p-pop on a hand stand or whatever else happens to be the dance-of-the-day.

Don't worry, they were all seniors this year, so they will be gone. We don't really have that many big girls in the band anymore.

Ya'll have to accept that Mr.J is different than Doc, so of course he is still going to want to showcase a few of his songs. The Jackson State 0 quarter was pretty much Haymer vs. JSU this past year.

I think we need to take a different approach to the dance routine. The drills are also great, but the dance routine isn't consistently good. We have to find someway to entertain the harder to please crowds during the dance routine.

Bring back Louisiana music during the dance routine. Who cares if outsiders know the song or not. The home crowd use to love it. In any club in BR thats what gets crowd buck.

I agree with that..

I think you should research and play what ever the home crowd know including on the road... we used to do that... they still may.. I really don't pay too much attention to dance routines...

First off let me say this is a great thread. There should be more constructive, honest threads like this one on here. Hats off to Mustard Man.

Well the things about our program (AAMU) were mostly covered by Xhale and Blankman. I can expound upon them though.

- Recritment, The MMW has suffered the last couple of years with a small upper brass section. That has put them at a disadvantage against SWAC band with larger upper brass sections(JSU, SU, ASU). The staff needs to get the numbers back up so they can compete better.

- The field shows have improved slightly over the years but they are still lackluster.

There are some other things that I would talk about but I wouldnt want to put them on this board.

my 2 cents:D

We need to be more aggressive too...
