Tavis Smiley ends State of the Black Union

You may not be insinuating what I am saying.. but what you said is sorta what I am "insinuating"... Most of them folk just want to be "SEEN".. that's all I get out of it because there are a lot of the "little" people doing things in the communities... If they/we are doing these little things and being some what effective.. Shouldn’t these "BIG DOGS" be picking up more slack than us?

Some of your points are valid. I gotta admit. I myself don't like the folks who come in the hood for show. So I follow you on that part.

Let me rephrase the word "national" to what I said before.."more national"

Just like SU/GSU bayou classic gets "more national" coverage than any other HBCU football game...

Oh...okay...I feel you now...b/c that game aint about shyt and doesn't deserve it! So Yeah...I feel you now! :D

Awwww you have a good memory young grasshopper...however, I"m at a different plant...sitting next to a Polish lady and a Brother!

This is a very interesting yet entertaining thread....

I wish Tavis Smiley well when he publishes the memoirs of R Kelly. Can't wait for that book to come out.

:lmao: Is it going to be beep in my jeep, while I pee pee.

Since I been out of school, I have organized an event in New Orleans that created over 300 scholarships for New Orleans kids who wouldn't have had the means to travel and audition for scholarships... these students were awarded scholarships to JSU, GSU, TxSU and Miles due to my efforts in my city...

I also give free private lessons back at my high school and help assist the board for high school charter in which I donate funds and time to....

KNOW who you talking to before you think you know about them... Your problem is you think you on this unbelievable level that no one has the right to voice their opinions if it don't line up with yours...

You can carry your tired ass on with that foolishness...seriously...

Ima say this one last time... you don't know ME enough to be making ASSumptions... Take my opinion and push on.. state yours and I'll do the same.

Your opinion don't have more validity than no one else on here "sister"...you need to get that shyt together for real...

Since I told you what I done in my urban community... WTF have you done beside persuade people to VOTE for these folks who aren't making a change in MY urban community? (I'm sure it's many others looking around their community trying to figure out what the fug have the people you PROMOTED with your efforts done for their urban communities)....

And please don't tell me about some meeting you sat in on...:xeye: spare me the bull...

It’s seems like the only language you speak is bitch. I THOUGHT I was talking to an intelligent man who had the mental capacity to discuss topics without anger and name calling. But you have proven me wrong time after time.

Your 300 scholarships are cute, keep up the good work. But son don’t ever try and challenge me on what I have done for the community. Last year alone I raised close to 175,000 to help fund scholarships and training programs in “ourâ€￾ communities. Do you need a check? My “tired assâ€￾ is done having these pointless conversations with you. You can continue your verbal masturbation on why everyone else is not doing shit by you damn self.

deuces!

Awww.. so you don't have that white man standing behind you telling you what to post no more?

That explains a lot....lol

I should have known to were kicked out of that plant and transferred to another...lol

:love::love: I want you bad.

As the daddy from the movie "Taken" said to his daughter's stepfather at the beginning of the movie.

"Now is not the time for d__k measuring!"

People, can we stop throwing what we do to help our communities around like its the socially-graceful version of saying "Dis my block, punk," or "I run this social advocacy shat right chea, podnuh."

Y'all starting to sound like Tony Montana hopped off on coke in a bubble bath smoking a cigar saying "Who put this shat together? Me! That's who!"

IMO, I'd rather not know who's doing the work to help our communities. In my line of work, ironically, when folk start beating their chests about what they do, that's when the increased scrutiny occurs and sometimes there are let's say....discrepancies, dig. And those "discrepancies" do more to hurt their particular case more than the work they're doing.

I always applaud people that do good works in their communities. However, don't beat your own chest—show a little humility and let someone else do your PR for you.

Didn't your ass challenge me? What I was supposed to assume your tired ass raised what ever you say you raised... I have documentation of what I have done... Again, wtf do you think you are girl?

I ain't ask you what was "cute".. you ask what I have done .. ASSuming I haven't and don't do anything....

If you counting that campaine trail isht you have done ...I did that with Ray Nagin before his first term.... So that as you say is "cute" as well...

I only speak bitch to those who seem to only understand it..

Now go ahead and tell us how you sat in on KEY black movement meetings with Al Sharpton.... :retard:

Now that is the true... Can someone let me know when dude starts talking about my mother because we know that is the next step. Where is SGT when you need him :retard:

As my grandmother use to say "Oh Jesus be common sense"

I think the problem with our community is that folks don't realize there isn't one solution to fixing our problems. Everything that is done is great. It doesn't matter if you fix peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for kids to eat after school or lunch or you house ten thousand for after school and reading. It makes a big difference. Many times we look for big answers, when on reality if you as an individual can only save one life and others as a group can save five hundred, it all helps the cause we are trying to reach. Saving one is better than saving none at all. Help folks from your heart, not to be seen be all man. For it is not man that judges you, but the one who inspires you is the judge. Black love is great, it's knowledge and it's power!!!!

And i'm gonna have to leave this topic, I came in here to get away from Small Talk/Band Room/Sports Board shenanigans and yall done brought it in here. Damn, where can I find refuge?

American Politics are very minor compared to the rest of the world. We argue behind computer screens. They shoot people in the streets.

Come on people. This thread is a prime example as to why we aren't making any MAJOR progress right now. We can't come together and come up with SOLUTIONS. We down each other and turn things into a pissing contest. We gotta come together folks. This is a serious issue.

Back to the topic. I enjoyed the State of the Black Union and I think we need more things on that level to address the issues in our communities. If we don't do then who will?

I went to the one in New Orleans at the Convention Center, I enjoyed it quite well. Dick Gregory was going off.

It ain't about no "pissing" contest.. the young lady asked a question and I gave her an honest answer.

I didn't even address her.. I stated my opinion and asked a valid question that didn't put "her" on the spot.

I guess I can't comprehend what some of you in here are saying about how great/good the SOBU was/is when I'm in the hoods here in New Orleans and outside of the music after school programs me and a few others are involved with, I 'm seeing a difference in those communities.

The only question I was asking and still is asking is:
What notible changes did the "SOBU" make in "any" urban community?

I would honestly like to know... Because outside of the meeting I have not seen nor heard of any issues being attacked here in New Orleans and lawd knows it's many issues that could be attacked by such large groups like this "SOBU"

I think you are failing to understand what the State of the Black Union was. In my understanding and what I got from the ones that I watched, was situations like what you mentioned. Your ideas/program was a byproduct of the SOBU. Now I'm not saying that the SOBU gave you your idea, but it was a symposioum of people who talked about the issues facing Black America and offered possible solutions. It was up to us as individuals to take their suggestions, marinate on them, tweak them and to come up with ways to serve and better our individual communites, as you did with your program. That was the true meaning, IMO of the SOBU conference. It is not for the panels of speakers collectively to go out into the cities and do good. So technically, the SOBU could do nothing. The same with the Million Man March, it wasn't Farakhan and his organizers duty to go out to every city and effect change. It was up to the attendees that were there, those watching on TV and others to go back into their homes and communities and to try and make a difference. Some did, some didn't and most we will never see. The Hoodie Awards that you mentioned, are the same deal. Now I don't know head nor tail of what businesses won the awards. Haven't seen any national recognition, (so I disagree with your national exposure theory) but if it inspires my barber shop or my hole in the wall fish stand to be a little cleaner because now they want to compete for the award or if it helps someone to open a shop in a depressed community to help out the community, then it works. And these are things that I may never see or realize as I drive by on my way to the burbs.

So basically what I'm saying is, I get where you are coming from, but honestly my problem is more with Tavis than the SOBU, and we have to realize just exactly what these things are; vehicles/avenues to come together exchange ideas, celebrate others and to leave inspired to do more. They're not the agent of change, we are.
