Big Ten looking to expand to 12 teams?

Pitt has historically been better than Kentucky in football. So yes.

And Kentucky has historically been better than darn near everybody in basketball.

And although history is very important, the Big Ten has to look forward, not just backward in making their decision.

I can't see Syracuse making that move at all. They are the flagship in the Big East when it comes to Men's Basketball. They have a great rivalry with Georgetown and UCONN...

You can't be serious??? UCONN is the flagship basketball program. Cuse has been barely making the tournament the last few years. Football is the real money maker. BBall is really second tier. Mich, Ohio State, and Penn State fans would pack their football stadium every other year. Those three games would be guaranteed sell outs. No team in the Big East can compare.

Yes. I am serious and I'm going all the way back to the 80's which should be included as well. UCONN didn't show up until 90's. That's when Calhoun had Donyell Marshall, Ray Allen and a host of others on there team.

UCONN and Syracuse always had serious battles in college basketball when Georgetown was down in the 90's til the early 00's. It doesn't makes since for Cuse to go to the Big Ten in basketball.

Duece, you are looking at how Kentucky does in the SEC.

Of course I am. That's where they play, and its probably the toughest football conference on the planet. Oh by the way, you're looking at how Pittsburgh does in the Big East too, right?

Pittsburgh was a win away from a BCS bowl berth.

Would they have been a win away from a BCS bowl berth if they were in the SEC? I don't think so.

They have been better than Kentucky in football . . .

See my comment above.

and their basketball program has been better than Kentucky recently.

We all know that's about to change.

Also Kentucky is not going to want to leave the lucrative SEC for the Big 10. It is no reason for them to do that. Lexington is close enough to Nashville and Knoxville. Not that bad to get to on down to Athens. The longest trip they have is probably to Baton Rouge or Gainsville. Kentucky aint that close to Minnesota, Iowa, nor State College. It would be more travel for them in the Big 10 than in the SEC. Ann Arbor and East Lansing would not be no hop skip and jump either.

I think you just want Kentucky gone.

They add big recognition to the SEC in basketball. They leave and the SEC would not have any Mens team that has that kind of recognition. Florida won those 2 National titles, but we know that aint the norm.

If the SEC could trade Kentucky, and its basketball tradition for FSU and its football tradition, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

I think they should add Central Michigan.
But then again, Central Michigan would embarrass the Big Ten by winning that sorry ass conference every year.

Now I agree with you! Central Michigan has been doing well as of late! Didn't they beat Michigan State?

Please don't compare Pitt football to Kentucky football, regardless of conferences they played in.

if Pitt was in the SEC...they'd be competitive and make bowl games. If Kentucky was in the Big East, they'd still be Kentucky football.

Y'all SEC homers are making me sick. Pitt has been producing some players recently (Joe Flacco somehow escaped them and transferred to Delaware). Pennsylvania is prime football country and they get it in against JoePa'nem.

Hell name me ONE Kentucky football player that was as good as LeSean McCoy was at Pitt. Or even Larry Fitzgerald Jr. And that's recent, recent Pitt history. Let's not get started on RB No. 33, QB No. 13 and Hugh Green.

Pitt's probably has the inside track on joining the Big 11. A Pitt-Penn State annual rivalry game would have two-thirds of the state on lock since State College, Pa. is smack dab in the middle of the state.

Also, there's the basketball thing with Pitt also. That's a natural fit.

Cincinnati doesn't have the tradition that Pitt has with Big 10 members and the juuuuust got good in football. I doubt they'll get past Pitt.

West Virginia is my dark horse in this. Morgantown's not really that far from the Big 10 schools, with Iowa being it's longest trip. Hell, West Virginia's trip to Tampa to play South Florida's probably further.

Don't get sick, Journalist.

But remember, this ain't just about football. But for the record, if Pitt was in the SEC, they'd be right about where Kentucky is in football, and way below where Kentucky is in basketball.

Over the past 5-7 seasons, no they wouldn't. Pitt basketball would have won the SEC the past couple of seasons.

I doubt that Kentucky will leave the SEC because of the big deals that the league is getting from CBS and ESPN. Understand. The money is benefitting all sports. Yes, it is a long ways from Lexington, Kentucky to the Minneapolis and Madison, Wisconsin.

I doubt that the ACC would take back South Carolina. I cannot remember their ACC days, but from what I understand, their leaving the ACC was not a good one. Memories were or are still very long. Hence, they went to the SEC.

This is from the Big 10 website. I did not think about it at this time yesterday but understand why and how a decision could be made.

BIG LIFE. BIG STAGE. BIG TEN.

The Big Ten Conference is a union of 11 world-class academic institutions who share a common mission of research, graduate, professional and undergraduate teaching and public service. The conference's 100-plus years of history, strong tradition of competitive intercollegiate athletic programs, vast and passionate alumni base, and consistent leadership in innovations position the Big Ten and its entire community firmly on the Big Stage.

One should read about some of the changes that were made in college football in 1978. It was when the suit was filed against the NCAA for TV rights. I remember Vince Dooley talking about (in my opinion whining) about the suit in 1984. The big schools won their suit in the Supreme Court in 1984. It is all about the big schools keeping as much money as they can.

I will admit that I did not think about that at this time yesterday. Consider this. Texas State (30,000+), formerly SW Texas State and located in San Marcos, has more students than every school in the Big 12 South with the exception of Texas (49,000+) and Texas A&M (43,000+). It has more students than four Big 12 North schools. I do not see the Big 12 inviting Texas State to become a member anytime soon. It does not matter if Missouri stays or leaves.

Someone posted this on another (MEAC) message board yesterday. I do not see the University of Kentucky listed.

Big Ten serious about expansion, but risks could outweigh benefits

As with universal health care, Big Foot and the Arrested Development movie, my stance on potential Big Ten expansion remains unchanged: I'll believe it when I see it.

But clearly, something has changed within the conference's ranks. After years of pooh-poohing the idea of a 12th team, several prominent league officials have begun publicly pushing for expansion. On Tuesday, the conference issued a statement on behalf of The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors, which "discussed the future" of the league at its Dec. 6 winter meetings and has asked commissioner Jim Delany to "provide [expansion] recommendations for consideration ... over the next 12 to 18 months."

Brian Kelly left them in good standing and now the current coach just left for Cincy.

They can only beat the marginal Big 10 teams.

All Big 10 teams are marginal. You will see when Oregon beats the dog snot out of YOUR Ohio State University

Yada Yada Yada......we will see. Oregon will be tough to beat. When they are clicking they can beat any team in the country. So that aint no revelation.

Once the Big Ten goes back to the old ways of doing things like the SEC does now.:D Maybe we can get some extra gold teeth players as Mighty Dog says to win some BCS bowl games.

BTW,
It is THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY to you buddy.

If Oregon plays fast and forces Ohio State to have to throw the ball to win...wait a minute. This game doesn’t mean anything. No national title on the one the line. Who cares who wins?:noidea:

There's only one game left that matters.

The rest of these bowl games are "for entertainment purposes only".
