And MCC week was the worse.

worse week of my life. and i'm from Bham too. all them ole heads in the tunnel(the old tunnel entrance), just waitin on a crab. I had that hat pulled down so far over my eyes. :emlaugh::scared: Now I remember that shit. :smh:

I knew It had to be SOMETHING....

~_________~

but my crab sisters were freshman and they say the same shit I say, soooo. :noidea: i think yall just lookin for a reason versus just accepting my opinion of my experience for what it was. i'm personally shocked to hear folks enjoyed theirs, to each his own, but never heard it before. now my high school crab year was a little awesome!

I was not/am not an XL lol (But I still got that shirt lol where's Dave I want one that fits!...last of that era). But i wouldn't change a single thing about it (and I know y'all wouldn't either)

One BIG ASS'D "No-NO", was no partying/Clubs..... man first damned game was in Detroit and that game had the whole DOWNTOWN waitin for us. It was so much shit goin on, that every crab in my section met up in our room to have an executive meeting bout where we was gonna go and not snitchin if we got caught. we went to a strip club, liquer store, dance club, lil festival thing they had, and across to Canada...    I got caught trynna buy a pizza at 2am by doc.... :lmao: @that first part! yes indeed! Good ole CLASSIC WEEK!

and yes, I agree with the misunderstanding. thats why I was like, maybe i'm using/interpreting the word wrong or something. but I gotcha.

My first day in A&M's band was about to be a HUGE misunderstanding. I didn't know what the hell crabbing was but they gave me a real quick crash course.... :shame:

I was lucky when I crabbed. My High School BD was from Grambling so we crabbed even in High School. Plus, he had a whole group of Grambling cats that would come and work with us over the summer on playing and marching. Bottom line, I had been steeped in the HBCU Band culture for several years before even attending college. By the time I got to Southern, I knew the whole game plan.

Truthfully, Crabbing was not as difficult as I expected it to be -- probably because I was so prepared. I knew exactly what to expect. I was in shape when I got there (the best shape of my life!), I was tight on my axe and I was ready for the BS.

It probably also helped that I had a totally "no joke" section leader (Much love to you, Mr. Tracy Dyer, SIR!) who didn't tolerate any foolishness. Tracy was an engineering major who carried a 3.75 gpa and was one of the best musicians in the band. He didn't have time for B.S. and he didn't allow any. His whole thing was, "Can you play your part?" and "Do you know the show?" If you did, fine -- if you didn't, then woe be unto your a$$.

Don't get me wrong -- we had our share of crazy upperclassmen (Dean Vigne, Roebuck, Gino, Dickey Wright, Kenny Green immediately come to mind. Also "going through the mud" was a unique experience.) but my memories of crabbing (fuzzy though they may be -- it's been over 30 years) are not horrendous ones. In a lot of ways, it was a lot of fun.

yes, i can relate to that. my BD my last year in high school was MMW...played sousaphone, so he gave a lot of insight of the HBCU band culture, as you say. I was ready for the beat downs, however I was NOT prepared for the mental trickery. :smh:

that shit would have turned into another Columbine.... I wouldnt have cared how many of them it would have been... i mean it aint the football team... its the band... 75% of that 80 would have been week ass *****s off top. Make me do push ups, skits, etc... but I dont play the hands game.

First off....

Man, I don't think yall realized what kind of crabs we were, sometimes. Dude, we used to wanna do good for ol'heads and alum to be accepted with that "S". Mix that in with yall terrifying the isht out of us...and, now you got my CB's in there playing the Benson role....lol. Man, we had some dawgs in our crab class...but, the upperclassmen were SO unpredictable...the only way most of us reacted, was by just doing what we were told. N!gga.s just wanted that "S" that much.

...Im glad Ronnie was only wrong on a few levels for that one. Cuz, that's hilarious. Heck, that ordeal, alone, probably strengthened Floyd's faith, while strenghtening his wood...

Man... Floyd was like.. "Do I really have to do this sir?!?!"....
He thought I was going to excuse him from the assignment Ronnie gave him... I couldn't do nothing but laugh...lol

You talking about Spike from Opelousas?

Yeah man... I don't how Spike got caught up in that...
Matter of fact...

I wasn't surprised at all to see Lo' Rob... and lil Ronnie (your frat) been was saying "I got something for that holy boy Floyd"......lol When he brought Spike in... I was like WTF?!?!

Ronnie said... "Told yall I had a surprise for yall.... Spike used to be in there drove like hell.....lol

lil Ronnie was a mudda fugga.... I had to deal with that cat in the 6th grade when he was in the 8th in the trumpet section... been knew how wild he was...lol

Man you know how freshmen pre-freshmen I heard say that?

And I mean some of the roughest cats here in New Orleans...

Yeah, I thought it was folks who was actually in a band in on this discussion:noidea:... Outsiders always say what shit wouldna happened if they were there:retard:. Guess thats why they wasn't~. I've sent many a wannabe back to Jones hall to pack they shit because they found out that that crab schit was not what they wanted!

I was not aware that it was like that. You know I went to a corps style high school that didn't crab so when the dude necked me I was ready to beat the isht out of him. He was a punk (IMO) hiding behind S.T.I.X., he fell back real quick when I rose up lol

Steve, I hear you foreal, you know i was just messing with you. Honestly, i can say that that was some bs, considering your era. It could've been bs during my era, but because it was still halfway in the system so to speak, not exactly. By the time I was a crab, folks didn't put their hands on you unless you were "wit it". it still was "get right" given on the field, but not a lot. Now Snake nem era, you would'a got necked clean on the field in front of Wesley just for being a crab and probably in the early 90s also. But after 95 or 96(i think), you didn't get "touched" unless you were knowingly wit it.

That was the change/shift that saved my band career. In 2000, the first year of the hazing agreements  We were on the bandfield I was teaching face movements..parade rest, and them crabs wouldn't position their head right. so I went down the line correcting them. This BYTCH ASS HEFFA from Atlanta went to Wesley and told him I necked her. WTF? He put me out at first, until I went to student affairs and filed a complaint. without due process he didn't have that right. SA put me right back in the band the next day, and when I finally met with Wesley, he told me I was good and to not approach that girl personally or he was gone put me out again.(yall know I was ready to beat heffa to sleep for lyin on me), i told him straight up, "i'on even know why you believed her, you know we don't lay hands on folk that aint wit it." and walked out the door. you know what happen next right, ole gul quit within the next week, i pulled some west side of hell just for her. you don't lie on me and think i'm just gone fall back.

man I would walk in the door yellin, this aint whatcha want! :lmao: i've sent so many packin that I've lost count. that story that I just finished talkin in bout in my last post was the only purposely done though. I was DETERMINED to make that bytch quit if it was the last thing I do. I hate mofos that wanna start shit just cause they feel they are not "treated" right. But see me and that girl had it out during concert season cause she transferred then. She came up in Wind Symphony like she was bout to run shat. we was like byyyyyyytch, this our section, you betta fall back until Marching season till you can come through. She tried to get at me and they had to draaaaaaag me out the bandroom cause I almost whooped her ass in the bandroom during a wind symphony band practice. :lmao: My section talked enough sense in me to calm down so I wouldn't get in trouble, heffa still talkin. I said, alright, just wait till marching season, remember you got to come through my shat, I got you. So yeah, I already had the check written to make her quit, all it needed was my signature. anybody else just couldn't hang, or didn't have the balls to start.

but the worse thing you can do is think its personal, mistake #1, we on some business this aint bout you. Most folk get that, but there are a few who it doesn't click with, hence that bs in the story i'm talkin bout.
