Will Obama's pitch to the IOC help get the Olympics to Chicago?

This is the part I can't understand with the GOP. How can you possibly have an issue with the Olympics coming to the States. It can be a huge boost to the area. Chicago benefits because it already has a number of existing places to use for venues. China and Greece (as I understand it) due to existing issues did not benefit greatly from an economic stand point.

I guess it is just the times we live in.

Well, a lot of the big wigs want the Olympics in Chicago. Both Republicans and Dems. They see it as a way of making tons of money for themselves in the long run. The people who are mostly against Obama and the Olympics are the people of Chicago who have grown weary of rampant corruption and deceit from local, county and state officials.

They don't want to be left with the huge bill the Olympics will bring after they are long gone.

Not in this case, it's pretty common for presidents, prime ministers, kings, etc, to lobby for their countries to get an Olympics. It's just Republicans whining about something to be whining about something, the fact that the city in question just happens to be Chicago just added another layer to it.

Exactly. Obama is spending 7 hours to fly there, 4 hours on the ground to make his pitch, and 7 more hours to come back. That's 18 hours total. Bush spent 4 days in Beijing, China to try to get the Olympics here. Where was the outcry then?

Whatever he decides to do folks will just have to fall in line and deal with it. He can't please everyone and hell he ain't trying to. That's why I admire my President, he is his own man.
After talking to several friends and family members as well as watching WGN news in Chicago I found out that a large percentage of folks are against having the Olympics there. They are concerned about the debt that the city will incur and they are also worried that the minorities in the city will not be offered many of the jobs that will be available. And several folks also feel that all of this time effort and money should be used to deal with the youth crime epidemic that has taken over the city.
Actually that is something to think about.

As it was mentioned before the residents here were not only concerned about the possible debt that could have been undertaken by taxpayers, but the corruption that has cast a significant shadow over the city the last couple of decades.

Cops are working without contracts, city employees have had to take furloughs to save money, the school system is struggling and Cook County has the highest taxes in the nation. And that is before you get to the crime.

The Europeans and the Asians are much better at this (in the IOC) than we are. They are better at managing elections and thinking strategically. We kind of think if you've got the best bid, the world will recognize that, and these decisions are made solely on the merits of the bid. Well, not solely."

You know some people are out of the loop, then you have entertain their "so called" comments. This was not Rio's first attempt, so them being a better host city is irrelevant. The entire city did not support the Olympics. That was a factor that influenced the committee's vote.

This is still conjecture. If the IOC is so corrupt and anti-American, please tell me why Atlanta got the Olympics in 1996? Atlanta is not even of the 10 largest cities in the United States. Atlanta had a great application and did an excellent job. Sometimes, Americans need to be more graceful and show class instead of always assuming there is a conspiracy against us if we do not win. Rio deserved it plain and simple. It is an exotic and colorful city and South America has never hosted the Olympics. The U.S. got an Olympics in each of the prior two decades, which is considerable since this event occurs only twice a decade on average.
