HBCU Help needed ...

I need some help here from some folk who know.

I have a niece who just started her Senior Year in High School. She wants to go away to college but she has some friends who are slightly negative influences. To top it off neither of her 2 older Brothers has finished high school.

She'd like to think she's a little lightweight "fly-girl" but she's really a good (and suburban "square") kid. We just need to get her out of Chicago and onto the right track.

Her GPA is right at a 2.0 and she has yet to take the ACT/SAT. She SAYS she wants to be involved in music in college but she has never been in the band -- she can sing however.

With all of that said (and if were easy, I could have figured it out for myself :noidea:) , what HBCU should I pointing her to?

She needs a school that she can get into but that will have a nurturing enough environment.

Should she be looking at a SWAC school?

I have heard GREAT things about AAMU -- what about them as an option?
What about someplace small like Miles (which I know nothing about)?

Hit me back with some thoughts -- this is serious business.

Can she aim for a choral scholarship? I know MVSU had a great choir back in the day.

Would she be open to junior college?

And Happy Birthday, Frat! :bday:

Have her look into Rust College! They have a good music program (choir) that is. I know several of my friends that have gone there and done well. I don't know if they have an open admission policy.

Bruh I'd say tell her to holla at Valley, because that is the FARTHEST thing she could get from the fast-paced Chicago lifestyle. If she wants to sing, get in contact with Mr. Orlando Moss, the choir director. Valley keeps a fie ass choir, they just performed in New York at Carnegie Hall not too long ago. The only 2 things that concern me is that 2.0 GPA (it has to be igher to receive any kind of scholarship money) and her adjusting to a waaaay more laid back rural atmosphere.

He still there?!?! He was there when my brother was in their choir back in the early 90s. My brother got some great training in Valley's choir; his voice is beautiful!

Go to the AAMU web page Director of Alumni Affairs and look up the Chicago chapter and tell them the same thing you told us. They send a lot of students to AAMU and they have scholarships.

AAMU has a great choir and a lot of students from Chicago. Also the teachers/staff actually care so she would not be thrown to the wolves. She can call our music department and find out audition/scholarship information 256.372.5513

It sounds like a small HBCU environment would be the ideal place for her. Someone mentioned Rust College and that would be a good option with her current status. At this point that ACT score (or the lack of one) is going to be pivotal for her. But Rust only requires that you take the ACT, so at this point she could go ahead and apply for Rust; take the next ACT and go from there as far as admissions into Rust. Also Rust has a great chorale music program. It is somewhat lacking in other areas of student life. But that may be ok, if she's looking for a small, nurturing environment.

You should really encourage her to take that each of the remaining 3 opportunities she has to do so. NOW, of course, I must say that the Jackson State University Chorale is tops! The group has toured overseas and is the reigning champion of the HBCU Spiritual Song Festival. No one sings a spiritual like the JSU Chorale! :) With her current gpa (2.0) she'd need to score at least an 18 on the ACT in order to gain admission to JSU.

I would be interested in hosting you guys for a visit though. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in doing that. We have several visitation days during the spring semester. You may consider coming down and touring Rust and JSU.

Apply for Jackson State University anytime online: https://osiris.jsums.edu:4446/pls/PROD/bwskalog.P_DispLoginNon

To the group -

Thanks a million for all of your replies, PM's and information. You've been phenomenal!

What my sister and my niece are going to do is visit the 100 Black Men College Fair next month in Chicago. It is one the best college fairs going and I'm confident that she'll be able to get what she needs. (Check it out here: http://www.100bmc.org/2009CSFWeb.htm)

Thanks again Family -- I appreciate ya'll!
