You're probably right. I don't get it. Music is just that: music.

Marvin Gaye wrote and recorded I Heard It Through the Grapevine. It was a hit. Gladys Knight put her spin on the same song. It was a hit. My unscientific survey finds old schoolers split right down the middle on which is preferred.

Stevie Wonder wrote and recorded, Signed, Sealed, Delivered. It went to the top. Peter Frampton covered it and did the same thing.

There are two songs that I would not want some other school playing: Jackson Fair and Cheer Boys. The rest belong to someone else. Blowin', The Show, Get Ready, Big Ballin', Neck, Get It On, Let's Go, Elsa's, Tiger of San Pedro, In Storm and Sunshine...play them all. That is why someone wrote them down.

In fact, I propose to have a real Battle of the Bands and shut-up all of the noise. For the next battle of college bands, pick 3 songs for halftime and 5 songs for 5Q. Both bands present their versions, entry, drill, drama, dance, exit, etc. of all 8 songs. No alma maters and no fight songs. Then decide.

Naw bruh, I ain't jumping to nodody's defense for real...I never have really cared for that program, but i do recognize how real they were...long ago

This is nothing more or less to do with the one song "Do Wantcha' Wanna"..

I don't have no beef with no one playing it... Hell like the song say, DO watcha' Wanna.. I was out performing this song right after Rebirth started playing it BEFORE it was released on the radio so I could care less about who else plays it..

But why make it your signature song when SU already did so?

You missed what i was saying...I actually agree about it being a little odd that they play the song. I was answering Mustardman, when he said they have no funk or soul...not now they don't lol...but schit changes....They still sound good
 
Dang! You peeps over here are amusing!! Four pages dealing mostly with the idea that because somebody plays a popular song from the airwaves, then it is somehow theft, and 'denigrating and insulting' for them to do so. If that were the case, then no one would play Stars and Stripes Forever, the 'signature' song of the US Marine Corps Band, or Glenn Miller's In The Mood, etc. As someone previously posted, 'it ain't that serious!'

As for the 100d no longer having any soul/funk, I don't know what that means. It was because of overall musicianship that the performer Prince requested that the 100d back him up during his SuperBowl Half-tiime performance in 2006. And because of that, Kanye West and Jamie Foxx requested that members of the 100d back them up in their Grammy appearance later that year. And Barack Obama directed that the 100d (after his high school band) lead off his Inaguration Parade. Not too mention the many other accolades afforded the 100d in the just the last five years.

Some of y'all need to let go of your delusions, denial, and envy. Different bands all have their uniqueness. For example, the JSU drum majors have the best stadium entrance in the country. And the SU Jukebox is great in the stands, because they know when to play, and when to shut up. So enjoy your band and hope they continue to strive for greatness, "because in all the world there is only one. The most imitated band in America...the most televised in the World!':)

For the life of me, I do not understand why a band in FLORIDA would want to play a New Orleans based song that is a SU standard. I can understand if it was a big R&B hit or something like Neck that everyone plays. You know a nationally known and radio played cut. But no one would have even known anything about that song if SU had not played it. I guess I would have more pride than that. I would never want to see SU do something like that and make it their theme music or hype song. SMH. Old school pride send help. LOL.

To me that is a slap in the face if you are a FAMU 100 member. I would be pissed.

My Freshman Brother wrote that piece for our band, and he is a Jazz Nerd & Musical Connoisseur, and he truly had no idea that Southern played it when he wrote it. He wrote the composition as an assignment for Sarge's Arrangement Class, and his reward was a A, and an opportunity to bring it B4 The 100. Needless to say, The Band & OUR FANS absolutely LOVE that song. It wasn't until later that Myself, and another brother from McDonough 35 let him know that The S played it as well. No Biggie though.

Music is Universal, and as a Diehard Rattler, I love our Originality as much as the next man, but once our fans responded the way they did to the song, it was a wrap.
