Broadway Wants to Revise Schedule

Grambling coach wants Tigers to revise their scheduling philosophy
http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/20090908/UPDATES02/90908010/1006/SPORTS

Grambling has a murderous non-conference schedule this season. It's filled with landmine games. The Tigers opened their season on Sunday in Orlando with a loss to MEAC champ South Carolina State. They host Northwestern State this Saturday -- losing a day of preparation because of the SCSU game -- then have road trips to Oklahoma State and Jackson State.

Playing up to Oklahoma State is as close to a guaranteed loss as it comes, and by the time the Jackson State game rolls around, the Tigers could be a beat up and disheartened team. FBS powers like Florida schedule lower classification teams to soften their schedule, and Broadway wants GSU to do the same.

"If we're going to play Oklahoma State, then we need to play 'Podunk U' the following week," Broadway said. "...We can't frontload four early tough opponents like we have." (SCSU, OK, NW, JSU)

Podunk Univ? :retard:
Did that Loss to SCSU mess Broadways Mind up that bad?

No...he's the typical coach, wants to get those easy cupcake wins in out of conference. Not happening though...

I agree with Broadway. At some point you gotta say... ok.... enough. ESPECIALLY if they aren't paying u top dollar...

I think the scheduling is okay with the exception of the Oklahoma State game. The JSU game is debatable since we didn't have to play it but I think that Gram coming to Jackson was the right thing to do considering we went there last year. Well, he won't have to worry about that next year with the 9-game mandate.

I understand taking Okie State and those type schools off the schedule, but we need to play at least one mid-major and the other a FCS school. I'm not fond of playing NAIA or D2...that doesn't help our recruiting or attendance.

I agree MB. I think Betty Austin did good for us. I gotta admit I didn't think she would, but she proved me wrong. Playing TNSU,Jacksonville St, Hampton and TU was good for us. It gauges your program.

Many folks on TSPN lobbyed for these arse whipping, but MD never agreeded with playing folks without being supported. We don't need the money that bad. You don't make schedules that will get the coach fired, unless you give him or her what they need to match up.

MD, these people don't realize that athletics is less than 0.5% of a university budget. Let them tell it, we need $400K dollars to make it 0.53% of the budget... lol

I like AAMUs schedule. It has sensible, instate games, a classic and decent OOC HBCU. AAMU can realistically go 11-0 with that schedule.

Broadway crying about the schedule huh? Well you cant compare yourself to Florida cause you dont have Floridas money.

I thought the Gram fans on the board was excited about the schedule. Werent you suppose to beat SCSU and NW? Are yall having a change of heart?

I don't know about playing Podunk U, but I can understand not wanting to play Okie State. A Sunbelt School would be a better fit for us.

The heck with playing up. Our AD is trying to get that darn Monticello off our schedule.

I don't see anything wrong with that game. You just need a better OC and you guys will be okay. E-mail your AD and tell him to get you an OC.... There are at least 3 different OC's out there who would be an upgrade to what you have... John McKenzie, Shawn Gregory, and Melvin Spears. Right now, these guys are ALL position coaches.

...also, look at the crowd it drew! I would keep it! Like it or not, it's a measuring stick game.

No change of heart from me... I don't agree with Coach Broadway. I understand his reluctance to play Oklahoma State and other BCS conference schools with such regularity and agree that it should be an "every other year" type situation or better still only in the years when there is a 12th game.

We need to branch out and play SLC, Southern, OVC conference opponents since those are our recruiting areas.

f I were you guys...I'd play within the state of Arkansas as much as possible. Keep recruiting and (as TP said make an upgrade to one of those guys as your OC) and you'll turn the tables. You definitely need to schedule Central Arkansas...don't let them out grow you like we allowed Tech to do with us.

Maybe we should just play 10 games or less to avoid the tough games like other people.

Or you can play TxSouth 11 times straight. I would recommend PV, but since they has uprooted SU as the best 2nd place west team, I'm sure they would beat you all 6 out of those 11 times.

We are UAPB! We do not work that way. Conway beat us. Their butts are not on schedule this year. If SWAC keeps beating us, we will go to the none-game mandate.
Aren't those guys employed? We will not match salaries. I understand Mo Forte is out of coaching!
I think we would (no...could) beat them in the years to come. Taking them off schedule we say "We are sorry and can not beat them."
I am debating with myself. I think you are right. They should ramain. I think it will make us better.

If our name was Jackson State... The above would be true.

Too late on that outgrowing. I have been complaining since Mo was fired. However I think Monte will improve each year. I am ready to give him a chance. He will improve self and make staff changes as needed. Tell you this...if this year is like last, he needs to go.

I understand you point MB, but I am not sure we could have done anything to stop Tech from doing their thang. Hell, ULM sure couldn't. Tech gives ULM the middlefinger every chance it gets. The Tech folks have the mindset that after LSU...they are it within the state.

MB.......
I can understand taking Ok St off the schedule IF GRAM does nor need that particular game however GRAM has set the standard for the SWAC and for HBCU Football in general. I fully believe that GRAM playing the likes of Pitt, Fresno St, SMU and other true D-1 teams has/is set(ing) the table for the rest of the HBCU's especially the so called D-1AA teams to have the opportunity to get some of these games scheduled.

I fully understand what Coach Broadway is saying when he says he is concerned about his schedule being top-heavy with four (4) potential landmines. The fact is that in order for GRAM to get those "games" with say Neb, So Cal, ND or FSU, they are going to have to take some lumps on their way to this possibility.

Everyone thought Troy St (better known as AUBURN West) was crazy for scheduling FSU, Neb and others but they have set themselves up as a viable opponent for their move to true D-1 status.

Now I understand that this is not Bball where a player can recover with one day of rest, THIS IS FOOTBALL at it's highest amateur level.......and the body does not make a miraculous recovery over night and injuries are far more prevalent in this full contact sport but where does one draw the line??

Do we (HBCU's) want a chance to play some of the big boys........yeah I think that we do.............. not only for the $money$ or prestige if any..... but for us to gauge the readiness of our teams to compete on any level with anybody else in the country and to show those upper echelon athletes that "one does not have to go to a PWC in order to compete at the highest level in their sport of choice. If we could ALL make our teams schedule, I think more often than not we would schedule a cream puff, then a toughie, then a cream puff, then a mid-major, then another cream puff.......probably.

We must also realize that the MAJOR problem facing most HBCU's today is $money$ and generating enough revenue to support the entire Athletic Dept. Usually this means money from Football and Bball. No I'm not advocating the 'take azz whooping for a check mentality' but with cost of everything continuing to rise, HBCU's have to find ways to stay ahead of the game as far as generating revenue is concerned.

The so called 'CLASSISC' games are only going to give each school a certain amount of money and each school will probably get two (2)...... maybe three (3) of these kinds of games per year.

I think that the State of Mississippi has the right idea in keeping that money In-State to aid the Athletic Programs of the school involved in the match-up. A few years back Aub played d-2 Pacific and paid them $600,000 + expenses to fly in from Calif...........just think of what that kind of one game money would have done for AAMU or ASU programs.

Peace....

Well, your name is Ramblin and your coach is itching and moaning about playing Ok St. Now, my only question is.......................Whatcha gonna do?

Whatcha gonna do, Cletis?

See this was uncalled for. Your coach is the one crying about his schedule and now you want to talk about our 10 game schedule. That's on Braddy...

Broadway looking at a 0-3 possible 0-4 start and now he crying. Does he not have any say in the scheduling? You know Gram needs the pay dates so he has to live with it.
