After Calling High-Speed Rail Funds In Stimulus ‘Wasteful,’ Jindal To Request Millions

The AP reported earlier this month that Gov. Bobby Jindal’s (R-LA) administration is planning to request $300 million dollars from the federal government to develop a high-speed rail between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The trains, which would run at about 79mph, would be part of a larger Gulf Coast rail plan with top speeds of 110mph. Much of the money, however, comes from the Recovery Act, a stimulus measure Jindal not only opposed, but recently called a failure.

In opposing the Recovery Act, Jindal offered the Republican party’s official response to President Obama’s nationwide address last February. Jindal specifically smeared high-speed rail projects as “wasteful spending”:

JINDAL: While some of the projects in the bill make sense, their legislation is larded with wasteful spending. It includes $300 million to buy new cars for the government, $8 billion for high-speed rail projects, such as a “magnetic levitation” line from Las Vegas to Disneyland, and $140 million for something called “volcano monitoring.”

Despite Jindal’s political grandstanding, officials in his own administration have praised the idea of high-speed rail. “Long term, we see it as a very valuable economic incubator for the entire corridor, ” said Tom Atkinson, an official in the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

Jindal is trying to have it both ways on the Recovery Act. Though he slams it as a “stimulus that has not stimulated,” Jindal recently went on a 64-parish tour handing out jumbo-sized ceremonial checks filled largely with Recovery Act funds (view a compilation of Jindal’s check giveaways here). Rather than acknowledging the source of the money, Jindal printed his own name on the checks.

Though Jindal has been rapidly spending stimulus money for infrastructure projects around the state, his administration has refused to put up signs disclosing each project has been funded by Recovery Act.

I don't even like Jindal.. Dude has no identity.. He think he is white and he do a lot of double talking. He was about to let the Louisiana Legislature create their own salaries until the PEOPLE got pissed and started raising hell... THEN he stepped in and acted like he was against it all along...

Jindal is full of shyt..

Sounds like another George Bush senior ("Read my lips NO NEW TAXES"). This guy made a big debate about the stimulus money and seems like he can't get enough of trying to spend it and add the fact that he is trying to ask for stimulus money:noidea!

By emailing Bayoubuzz, Senator Yvonne Dorsey, one of the two most senior members of the Legislature for East Baton Rouge Parish, reacted on Monday to Governor Jindal's announcement that he has issued 258 line item vetoes against HB1 , the state's principle budget bill. Dorsey said, “No intelligent person can believe that HB1 contained that many problems after the administration itself spent so many months stirring the pot while we had it on the stove. Jindal has made a mockery of the line item veto and I am confident that we'll have the votes to put a stop to it. All of his vetoes are just political grandstanding aimed at feeding his ridiculous Presidential ambitions. I used to think that his political greed was just pathetic but now he's hurting ordinary citizen, especially children and the elderly. Can you believe he vetoed the YMCA? A Boy's and Girl's Club? Habitat for Humanity...twice, once in HB1 and earlier in the budget supplemental? Programs to help children in court? Meals for the elderly? This arrogant political climber is punishing our state's children, our Katrina victims, and the elderly just to set himself up for a hopeless run at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in four years.” SOURCE

It doesn't matter. He did what he needed to do and I'm just about certain it worked. He opposed the money publicly and thats all his idiot followers will remember. Now he can go back and take the money and do what needs to be done but the idiots will still believe he turned down the money no matter how many times you show them that he accepted it.

Thats a common conservative tactic. They understand the minds of idiots well.

I'll say again, Both Repub and Democrat politicians play off of the idiotic mindset of it's constituents..
Folks in areas like New Orleans, Detroit..etc. should all too well...
