SWAC Votes To Bring Back 9 Game Conference Format

Overall, I feel there is a gap. A huge gap? no. but observable? yes.

Does taht mean the SWAC cannot beat a MEAC school? no. but does that mean to head, we wuold win more games? I would say look at the meac/swac challenge records.

I sincerly feel that if you take our top 2 or 3 schools against yours, we beat them more than we lose. not crush them, not sweep them, but win, more often than not.

some of that is coaching. but a lot of it is recruiting. If you look at our recruiting, it has clearly gone WAY up every year for the past few. I will research some articles from past classes with quotes, but dozens of our recruits over the years that could have gone to bigger schools mention that they like the fact that we compete for the 1-AA title, AND the fact that thye can play the "big boys" like clemson, or Georgia tech (2010)

again, does that mean that the meac would dominate the swac from top to bottom? no. coaching has a lot to do withit....but you take a SCSU team or a famu team with good coaching and our recruits, vs a jackson state or grambling (record wise your best 2 teams from last year), and I think that SCSU beats both 7 outta 10m and famu does as well.....

just my opinion.....again, does that mean the swac cant get great recruits? no....but you are arguing that NOT going to the playoffs has no effect. We argue that it does.

Also, I would challenge you with this. You argue that not going to the playoffs doesnt matter. So then do you think that the fact that we DO compete for the playoffs somehow hurts us? Look at our program. In what way would SCSU NOT competeing for the playoffs HURT us.

I understand you are not a playoff fan. But it has done nothing to hurt our cause. the level that it has HELPED may be debateable. but the fact that it HAS helped is not.

I don't follow you becasue you can't use the SWAC-MEAC Challenge as an example. 10-2 Hampton beating a Grambling team that ended up 3-8 by three points in OT is not a fair comparison nor is a 9-3 SCState beating an eventual 6-5 AlaState team a good example either. Last year's match-up between JSU and Hampton and the SU-FAMU matchup were about as even as those games have ever been. SU-FAMU game last year was a fair comparison too but that game went down to the wire so again...no gap. The last time the SWAC and MEAC champs met during the regular season, SU creamed A&T. If you go from top to bottom in SWAC and MEAC I am not sure you will see any difference in those games.

I didnt see SCSU last year, but IMO, you're wrong on the FAMU and Gram angle. Gram was much more impressive.

to add more to my opinion, I think that the big name swac schools (southern, grambling, maybe jackson state) are affected less by not going to the playoffs...their name recognition gets them recruits....but a school like alcorn, or valley, or even the alabama schools, that dont have that MAJOR name recognition, are affected...

same with us...we dont have the name factor that a A&T and FAMU have....if we didnt go to the playoffs, and get that kind of notice, we would not be able to recruit against those biggger name guys.

in my opinion.

Southern and grambling, by way of the bayou classic, in a way do have a "playoff game" as far as getting their names out

but a bama state or valley dont...and that hurts them...

it aint no accident that for the most part, southern and grambling almost ALWAYS challenge for the SWAC. yeah, bama state might have a good year, or A&M....but for the most part, those bayou classic schools are always contenders.

are you sure u know what u are talking about? Was this done with any research or are you speaking off the top of your head? Now GSU yeah... SU has been to Birmingham how many times?

also btw.... the whole name thing is territorial.... A&T is not a named school around here.... FAMU, Hampton and Howard yes... A&T no.

Southern has been three times .... what's your point? MEAC schools know Southern, due to playing them more, than they would a Bama A&M. Not to mention that the number of times GSU has gone, how many times had they just given' up the goods to Southern on national TV the week before?

Southern also ran through Atlanta NUMEROUS times with the Heritage Bowl. That's where our notoriety is coming from. AAMU and others were not a thought on the grand scale of BCF then.

I think that's all SCSU is trying to state here. We do have that advantage, but we haven't used it to the best of our abilities when speaking of recruiting IMO.

One more thing .... if AAMU is in the SWAC West, how many times do you get to B'Ham for the SCG?

We can IF all day.... but I will give you facts... AAMU kicked SU ass the last 3 times we played :) .... no IFS.... no smack.... just facts.

Players,

Whether we want to believe it or not... recruiters from those other conferences are using the "they are afraid to play outside their conference" as a recruiting tool.

It's bad enuff that the rest of the conference members can't get an auto bid for winning the conference due to the BC and TDC (not saying that it's GSU, SU, or Bama State's fault, as that is really a decision that the NCAA made (imo) after the fact). But to take away a possible "At Large Bid" that one of the other schools might be able to garner due to a SCG that is really just a rematch of a game previously played just seems to be a bad approach. I know the SCG is all about revenue, but what about the benefit of increased conference and program exposure from participating in the playoffs....

MB, as you may well know, most Presidents could give a damn about an athletic department, unless it's bringing in some much needed dollars.
Most athletic departments operate at a loss, thus costing the school to rob from other departments to keep afloat sports....and for what? There's no profit, so what's the use?

If there were no NCAA guidelines for D-1A and FCS schools having a specified number of sports, most universities would've cut certain non-revenue generating sports like tennis, golf, badminton, volleyball, bowling and others a long time ago.

In the SWAC, it's more about generating revenue than making the playoffs. Due to the hard economic times most HBCU schools are having, I don't agree with the nine game mandate, but I understand.
