Re: Swac Spring Meetings Report

Alcorn
Jackson State
Prairie View
Texas Southern

TRY AGAIN!!! DO NOT put Alcorn in that list. We had a full 11 game schedule until GRAMBLING pulled out of the game with Alcorn to participate in the SWAC/MEAC Challenge. You all pulled out so late in the scheduling period that we couldn't find someone to take your place.
Alcorn had 11 games until Grambling ran off to play South Carolina State. Get your facts right.

I know it sucks for Alcorn...and I understand yall being upset, but Grambling didn't run. ESPNU selected Grambling and I'm sure that contractually the league had no choice...

“The numbers just didn’t make sense for us,” said Arkansas-Pine Bluff athletic director Skip Perkins. “We were better off staying at home and playing someone then to go all the way somewhere else when we weren’t making anymore money.”

When Perkins was hired at UAPB in 2007 a game against New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M., had already been scheduled. He said the payout from New Mexico State was $210,000, but expenses that included travel and lodging took up most of that sum.

“At the end of the day, we didn’t even take home half of that,” Perkins said. “That didn’t make any sense to me.”

Since Perkins has been in control of scheduling, he has stuck to a strict policy that he won’t agree to play a game against an FBS school for less than $300,000. And though no rule has been officially set, Sharp said conference athletic directors have set an “unwritten rule” on a minimum dollar amount for such games to avoid conference schools bidding against each other with the same schools.

“That’s a negative that we really don’t need,” Sharp said. “I think the A.D.’s have done a good job of saying ‘Here are the criteria that we all need to go by.’”

Perkins, who serves as a liaison between conference athletic directors and its football coaches, said when the athletic directors voted on the issue on the final day of the SWAC meetings June 5 in Birmingham, Ala., he didn’t prefer one system over the other. He still feels that way, but can say a nine-game schedule allows for a more definitive conference champion.

“I think it’s more true this way,” Perkins said. “We’re only playing for, really, one prize, that prestigious, coveted SWAC Championship. So at the end of the day why shouldn’t all 10 schools play each other?”

Perkins, who said he’s “pretty sure” he voted earlier this month to move back to the nine-game schedule, likes the system also because it still allows for playing a paid game. With two nonconference slots he can still envision playing an FBS school the first week of the season and another against an in-state Division II school. The rest of the schedule will be made up of familiar conference foes that fans enjoy watching.

Looks like PV is about to "didn't make any sense to me" if that's 100% truth and I'm most certain we're not taking the band as part of the package. If they do take the band, that sends a very, very powerful message to the rest of the SWAC since we don't allow our band to travel to SWAC schools due to their perceived "behaviors." :read: I think NMSU's payout to PV is 250,000$. I know precisely what PV is going to do, so we're going to make a MAJOR profit (closer to 200,000$): 739.74 miles, 11hrs 11mins travel time by car (hitting 10 just west of Austin). Las Cruces is 45mins from El Paso airport and is closer to PV than Alabama A&M University, distance wise. 3 coach buses, we're rolling.

And how much would have PV spent/made if they had to host SHSU this year... :noidea:

Probably would have played at least 10 games if they kept the Kats. :shame:

I modified my original post TT. It make not make any sense for us to have given up the game w/ SHSU considering the proximity of both schools but it certainly makes cents. ;)

If an FBS-Tx client was looking for a game on the same date as our game w/ a SWAC foe, I think it best we pay the SWAC foe 50,000$ to shut their pie-hole and play the OOC FBS game. lol It makes cents. :read:

Go Delaware State! Everybody's out for themselves in these "type" conferences. lol

You're pathetic. We're not "like GSU." :retard: But you are right about one thing you said, "you reap what you sow." I guess we must've sown some really great things because we're totally unaffected by what some of you others are going through. :read: In fact, we're growing and show positivity while some show diminishing student populations and negativity over the last "N" yrs. :read: We're not firing much required academians unlike others right now, so we're truly thankful we were put in a position to continue to be successful. So, don't put us in that same sinking ship some of you are on. I don't have enough bandwidth and patience to speak on everything that's been done recently and is coming down the pipeline currently (athls and academics alike :read: ) about us and really don't pay too much attention to what's going on over there======> there ^^^^^^^ there VVVVVVVVVVVVVVV or there <-------------------.

I'm not sure what to make of your rhetorical statement about "evil" mentality when my mentality is "what's best and efficient/effective/supported/necessary/makes cents-sense/etc." Some of you need to come out of the 1910s w/ your backwards thought process and embrace that you live in a capitalistic society where only the strong survive. In order to survive, one has to be competitive. If you're not competitive, just go away and let others compete instead of being a wasteful hinderance lol. :swink: I'm sure you're a life/active member of your univ's NAA and you support your athl programs yearly w/ your $$$$ for you to be speaking so highly of your stuff lol. tee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee :retard: Lastly, don't type the word "ignorance" when you obviously don't know the meaning of the word and speak w/ a tonal thought process that is quite transparent & is quite ignorant. Really. :)

We're not upset. We want and hope Grambling represents the SWAC well in the SWAC/MEAC Challenge in Orlando. However, don't say we didn't have a 11 game schedule when we actually had one until Grambling had to play in the SWAC/MEAC Challenge.

We should have never been playing in the first place. Another example of our ADs being lazy and sticking with the easy route of scheduling (known) instead of going out and creating new relationships and revenue streams (unknown).

The FAMU fan base is quite upset with the current number of MEAC games. We (not just the diehards) are aware of the financial and competitive opportunities this is costing us. SWAC rivals, FCS power teams and FBS games paying over $500,000.

As various SWAC schools go through the same process and the fan base is asked to give more, as the school passes on opportunities there could be significant friction. I still say it is time for some programs in HBCU football that have opportunities and who want to be serious to band together.

Exactly. It doesn't make much sense for lucrative deals to be passed over while at the same time asking fans to foot the balance.

Even if the school only makes 200,000 dollars out of the deal, that's 200,000 dollars it didn't have in the first place. Some of these AD's are just not competent or qualified to run fund-raising machines such as an athletic department.

Until our Presidents replace/reassign those AD's and bring in qualified AD's who know how to fundraise, we'll continue to run far behind other conferences and continue to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process.

Addition: OR actually allow the AD's they have to attempt to make something for the university instead of being micromanagers, we'll continue to run behind everyone else.

FAMU's highest attended home football games are SWAC rivals.

:topic:

Wasn't FAMU at one time considering moving to the SWAC? Is that still up for discussion at all?

I understand overtures were made at some point, but it will probably never happen. Playoffs is a sticking point. And nine games. BCU would not come and we have to play them and TSU.

So FAMU and BCU had to be a package deal? What does Tenn. St. have to do with FAMU moving to the SWAC? You'd still have two OOC slots to work with....to fill in Tenn. St. and BCU.
I'm just saying....since your best attendance is primarily with SWAC schools.

Common sense shows that if FAMU played Bama St, AAMU, South Carolina St, Jackson St. Alcorn, Tenn St, SU and Gram their attendance would be above average. These schools are in close proximity than FAMU's other meac opponents.

add in BCU and A&T and you will have their schedule.. :lecture:

Cliff is right tho....with some, the playoffs is an issue. FAMU wants to participate (though they have not been in 10 years). However, if FAMU left, I believe BCU would too. BCU would also benefit from divisional SWAC play and if FAMU left, the ONLY schools even remotely close to them would be SCState (about 7 hours away) and A&T (about 10 hour away). But divisional play in the SWAC would have them playing more WEST schools while rotating SU and Grambling. But regardless, the Bayou Classic and Playoffs will never allow FAMU to enter the SWAC.

Ok Questions...
1. Some Schools cant get Money Games, ok, Now you have to play all SWAC schools. How Many of the Added SWAC games will be Money Games? Will you Now get $100k plus to travel to A&M or PV?
I think it would be fare if SU got every dollar that they bring to a Visiting Staduim... A&M, PV, ALA STATE, VAlley, Alcorn, JState, PINE BLUff all should pay SU.
2. Is this attemp to get TxSU, Alcorn, Valley, and Pine Bluff up to Par, or basicly Bring Everyone else down? Be Real, the 9 game is the only reason that PV isnt still 0 for in the SWAC. PV didnt get better, the SWAC just dropped to their level.
3. When did SWAC football start leaning on Money Games? Cant we just work on Putting a Product on the field that people want too see? Well we just lost all the 3 star athletes that we struggled to get..
4. wouldnt it be better to fine teams that dont det 11 games? we fining schools for Fights, why not this?

Anyway the SWAC is what it is...

The SCG should be canceled! If you don't have Southern or JSU in it, the other schools just don't bring any fans for it. Since we have gone back to this format a regular season champ should be declared, with Grambling and Southern being ineligible to win it since they play on the first weekend of the Division I-AA playoffs. We should submit to the NCAA to be eligible to compete in the in the playoffs.
